I married his wife’s niece. I met him just before he passed away. I didn’t know who he was. He was loving every minute of telling me the old jokes. We laughed and laughed together. His accent was not as thick in person. He had so much fun he gave me an autographed record of his stories. I gave it to my Dad. Uncle Bud was a good man.

I am from Ville Platte without the HEAVY accent. However, the literal translation of The Original French, of which we speak, to English, the rhetoric comes out the way he speaks. Moreover, his accent comes from the original dialect. The Cajans kept themselves isolated from the Anglican Church so well that the Cajans kept their ways, traditions, and language. Acadiana is whole different world, believe me. Our food is very simple and great.

I've always wondered if Bud's thick Cajun accent was real or just a part of his routine..........

Douglas Allen - Well, he lived in Acadiana I know. I'd imagine he may have embellished his speech for the act but no doubt had an accent to start with.

He was originally an Oilman from Houston. Its just like Justin Wilson.

Actually, this accent is VERY typical of the Cajuns of that time. Justin Wilson, though better known, actually watered down the accent so that more people could understand him. And he wasn't a Cajun to start with, as he came from the other side of the state. Bud Fletcher was a Texas oilman with an uncanny ear for accents, and his take on the Cajun dialect was spot-on. His records came out when I was a kid, and we used to laugh endlessly because his tales were so true to form and typical of all the Cajuns we knew when I was growing up in Lafayette, LA.
