The Tanami - we broke everything

in This video we took on the 1000 klm stretch across the Tanami desert from Halls Creek W.A to Alice Springs N.T, which resulted in the worst few days on our trip so far, Dust absolutely everywhere, a very busted and bruised caravan and getting caught in the middle of a bushfire. this is one episode you dont want to miss.

Good effort but dust in the outback? Who would have thought. There are still plenty of us that look for unsealed roads. Yes we have done most of the iconic roads and tracks and will be disappointed when another one gets sealed. Good to see that you kept smiling and your seance of humor. Happy travels.

Ran into a bloke who had just come off the plenty hwy and had come down the tar to port Augusta. 20 km out of port augusta his water tank fell off from his caravan and it was completely buggered. Apparently the fix is to get a couple of chains welded or bolted under the tank just in case it breaks the brackets and they will catch it.

Some awesome sunrises and sunets, but definitely not a track we would do again towing a van.

You guys had a tough run. We completed the track from Alice to Halls Creek in August 23 with our 76 series towing a conqueror UEV490 - similar conditions on the track including fires but no breakages and no dust issues. Very few vehicles on the road back then either. We didn't drop tyre pressures too much because of the rock sections v tyre sidewalls. Travelled between 70 to 75km when possible to smooth out the corrugations. Getting up to speed was horrendous. Thanks for sharing your journey and safe travels.

Thanks mate, pleased to hear you guys had a better run than us. Oh well it's all but all fixed now, and something the kids will talk about for a while. The sunsets and free camps to yourself was definitely cool though.

@@ltmm.australia definitely a road to remember. At a glance it's flat with not much to see - it's not long before you sense the isolation and realise there is actually so much to see. We had an awesome night camping just on the NT side of the border with WA. Didn't see another vehicle for about 24 hours.

Good video guys, been there a few times no probs but I seen some terrible things, nice you kept sense of humour, what I did like was plenty of views outside of vehicle and not a lot of talking heads, you'd swear some of these bloggers were running for public office they make it all about them and not the trip, as I said good clip, you got another viewer

Thanks mate, definitely had to take it very slow, we certainly didn't feel lucky at the end of it. But things could have definitely been alot worse. Thanks for the watch and the comment, really appreciate it.

did the Tanami 5 times to date, different every time, found another route, Alice to Port Hedland via Telfer this track not so well traveled and therefore not corrugated, the best so far and saved 3000ks from the bitumen way and fuel is available on the way@@ltmm.australia

I have driven the Tanami four times. Rough - 80 kph trip - 300 kms of mud with bypasses & the last time Hell on Earth! (with plenty of wrecked trailers & burnt out vehicles) It depends on the season & when the Graders can get in.

Nasty rough! How much was that shower hatch contributing to negative pressure inside the van?

Hard to say, I do believe it would have had an effect though, we have done the PDR and terrible dust and the ingress was definitely no where near as bad.

just wondering............what air pressure did you have in the van tyres ???also what speed over the corrugations ???, also anything underneath should be bolted on and carpet stuck to water tanks.......bit late now, but you survived,well done

Hi Mate, van pressures were 25psi, could have possibly gone lower but it was quite Rocky in sections, and the van weight 3.5 tonne so 25 was as low as I was happy to go on the particular track. Speed ranged from 10klms on very bad areas, upto around 70 klms on some short lived better spots, couldn't really go any quicker to try and get ontop of corrugations as it was so rough and rocky and you couldn't pull up for the big washouts. One day we drove 12 hours to make 160klms but hey as you said we got there and it's all experience. Thanks for the comment.

When the Tanami gets like Hell on Earth the theory of "Speed" & tyre pressure goes out the window. On one trip we were driving on the bank at 10 to 15 kph. I have driven it 4 times.

yeah, some places are just not meant for caravans......regardless if their chinese or top shelf aussie. that track destroys standard road train trailers.............the regulars have to get super hefty over the top engineered equipment to survive, probably wouldve had 18 - 20 ib in tyres,but big picture,the result wouldve been the same...love your attitude, keep on keeping on,cheers@@ltmm.australia

@ 15.00 onward that black smoke is a 100% indication that the size of the fuel load on the fire front is big, and its coming towards you now , very dangerous situation indeed, anyway corrugations always do lots of damage to caravans, but if water tank frames are bolted up not Tech screwed up much more chance they will stay in place. Caravan makers don't give a toss I reckon, built to a price not a standard.

Was definitely a stressful few days thats for sure. The water tank straps are actually bolted to the chasis with a welded thred/bolt and nylock nuts, they are a Alko kit which I believe most caravan manufacturers use the straps actually both broke at the fold and the vertical section was still bolted on. But I do agree with you, I feel when you buy a full offroad van you get beefed up unbreakable suspension and thicker chasis, but everything else is still the same road spec van.

@@ltmm.australia Yes whenever I get under vans and campers I cant believe what I see, Tanks don't come off with 5mm flat bar as hangers or Angle iron and me being a Boilermaker I make sure. 😁😁

Why would a van manufacturer who proportioning to make off road vans use wood screws into 3mm flimsy ply wood to suspend a heavy door.

Maybe slow down a bit, it looked like you were clipping along, ok for a camper trailer but a 3.5 ton van 🤔 What sort of tyre pressures are you running

25psi all round as low as we can go in a very heavy setup, maybe it looks deceptive in the video but 70klms was the absolute quickest we could go. Majority of the road was litterally 10-20klm 12 hour days driving only 160klm for the day

Our caravan is a fortitude unfortunately unless you have the budget to step up a level to sunseeker, kedron, titanium, zone rv ect, I believe nearly all vans are going to have similar issues, we have unfortunately spoken to alot of other travellers who have had worse happen to thier van, our van did do the PDR all the way up to the tip of Cape and handled that very well, I believe the Tanami is unfortunately just a caravan wrecker depending on when you drive it, the traffic it has seen and when it was last graded. Best of luck with the van, I hope you have better luck than we have had thus far.

Drove the Tanami in the early 80s in a Series 2A Landrover towing a trailer. Never had any problems. Then the Oodnadatta and Birdsville tracks with Jayco Freedom in the early 2000s. No serious stuff, just damage from rocks. But our van didn't cost over 100K! It's not the track it's your overpriced sh!t caravan.
