They put so much emphasis on the original characters is because SEGA won't let the main cast develop beyond anything too far from the starting point. Sonic isn't even allowed to CRY!

I believe it's due to being connected to the games, which means they can't make substantial changes as the games would have to take into account

@BoostBracelet fair reason. But it also means that the characters are forced to remain static. The writers want to do more complex stories, and they can't do that with the main cast alone, who are required to be kept a certain way. So the only way they can do it is by relying on characters who they are not bound by such a ridiculous stipulation. Hence, the myriad of original characters.

I love both of these characters! They're so kick butt in their own ways! I also love how supportive Tangle is of Whisper's past and her mannerisms as a person. She's not the cliche "oh you gotta stop being so shy and quiet all the time!" sort of person; she knows that Whisper likes keeping to herself and being a quiet girl, and she doesn't harp on it! :)
