The Tarp hut is probably the most versatile shelter there is. The main frame is the same but all the additions make it good for Heat, cool, cold, rain and snow. WARNING: If you make this shelter, follow the notching guidelines in this video to a T. And notching other than whats laid out here can result in the shelter falling apart or the ridgepole spinning and falling off. Years of trial and error has perfected the cuts and notches to make this frame what it is.

You must do something special and age related showing age should not make a difference in whether you should retire from the outdoors. You inspire! Add 21 years of hard living and you will understand why I truck camper camp. Another very interesting and enjoyable video. Now to go get a Gomboy. I grew up with a father that never camped until I was off to college. We had no place to go camping within a half day's drive. Besides he worked 9 hours a day, six days a week for a company and then evening he bought, repaired and sold cars just to get by. Then they built the Oahe Reservoir in South Dakota and he became the General Manager of the company and my older brother and I left home for college which we paid for ourselves, thus relieving Dad's pocketbook. He was a workaholic, not necessarily by choice, and taught me to be the same.

When I am not outdoors myself my new mission is to catch up and watch every video you have ever made. All of your video's are enjoyable and easy to watch. There is a small creek behind my place and I am going to make this shelter for a place to hang out most of my camping is out of a kayak or canoe but this would be a great place for me as a quick getaway for myself and only about 50 ft. away from home very private and nobody would know it was there unless I were to show them. maybe I can make it portable so 2 people could move it over a narrow part of the creek like you said. Thanks for another great video also good to see you have found a way to use a moving quilt when i was a kid my dad took my brother and i camping in the grand Teton mountain's it was aug. but still very cold at night and he throw about 5 or 6 of those things on us that night and i swear 50 of them would not have been enough. Thanks and I WILL see you in the next one.

With an hour to spare on YT, I find this absolute gem of a video. Dave, this has to be my favourite shelter by far that you’ve shown. The possibilities are endless with it! Thank you SO much for sharing your knowledge of this shelter. The fact it can be made so cheaply (maybe not here in the U.K. though, as prices are so much higher for any equipment) Is so versatile, and can be semi permanent is a priceless piece of knowledge you’ve shared & I thank you sincerely for taking the time to make it for us. Wishing you & your family all the best for the new year & I hope 2020 is a wonderful year for you, filled with family, friends & of course adventures 😁 I truly look forward to the videos you bring us next year. For rain, I think the tarp would need to extend maybe 3’ beyond the ends each side, or.. reach downward toward the ground- extending below the bed level. Especially because rain often falls at an angle rather than only straight down. If even a little rain can reach the bedding, the wetness will move across the entire bed quite quickly. For this structure, it looks like the bedding should always be a few feet shorter on both ends than the total tarp length. Excellent idea, and excellent video. It’s so enjoyable to watch your work.

I could sure use that in my yard which is full of talltrees--but for sure I could never leave it with the blanket(even the rope ) as these darn prolific squirrels would tear it up and use it for their home. Lesson learned when they chewed thru rubber garden hose to get water left in it.The H.f.small camo tarp you used is sometimes free with purchase here but always figured to small to use for anything except a groundcover ! You know, my pop carried a mattress all during WW2. He went in after Pearl and got out in '46. One soldier was jealous and tried to take it away from him and never tried twice. He was a strong man-he could break bike chains with his legs. But getting back, pop just couldn't stand layin on the ground. I like your tarp and dad would have loved it, too. Glad to see you back, Dave. Super vid. ATB, Jb.

Jb Bennett Very cool story! I love hearing real stories about real people like that. Im a lot like him, I hate sleeping directly on the ground. Sometimes you have to tho. I always fall back on what Mors Kochanski says that when in the Bush one of the most important things is to get a good nights sleep. Thanks for sharing your Pops story and thanks for watching my friend.

Good ta see ya back! and have a happy B-day... ya know occasionally H-F will have coupons for free 5x7 tarps (no choice of color but they are free). Last spring I picked up 6 5x7 tarps for free... (edited to add) I think that Duluth Pack makes a bed roll based on a modified Kephart (pre WW1 that was used through WW2 U.S.Army) bedroll, that with some slight modification to you’re a frame would work perfectly in your set up… A bit pricy but well made and not something you'd want to leave in the woods
@Reallybigmonkey1
@Reallybigmonkey1 10 жыл бұрын
bad hat Ive seen them trap coupons, I think them tarps are always blue but, free is still free! LOL. I have seen that bedroll and I bet it would work on this set up. Like you say tho, its too nice and expensive to leave behind on this set up.

Reallybigmonkey1 Our local U.S.Army post has detachments of Air Force, Marines AND Navy I have noticed that he Navy personnel wear shades of blue cammo so with a little imagination and work a FREE blue tarp could be camouflaged lol and like you said free is after all FREE (';o) edited to add... BTW I like the setup but I think It needs skeeter netting
@Reallybigmonkey1
@Reallybigmonkey1 10 жыл бұрын
bad hat Skeeter netting would be an easy add but I usually sleep with nomex gloves on and a head net if bugs are bad. I had a tarp bunk set up once for a few months on a mountain and I just left a skeeter net in that set up and used it whenever I went there.

Reallybigmonkey1 I'd make a comment about the size and viciousness of skeeters in the South but having worked in Alaska and Montana in the spring through the fall I can tell you that the Southern Skeeters pale in size and down right blood thirst come to think of it size too. (';O)

EXCELLENT THINKING WITH THE JACKET REPURPOSE INTO THE BAGS . I REALLY LIKE THE INGENUITY OF THE LIGHT DRAWSTRING BAG YOU MADE . I have a plethora of cargo shorts and or cargo pockets I salvage at every opportunity . Most are my old shorts that wear out . However FYI for anyone interested . Upon seeing unwanted bags of clothes on the side of the road aka trash day . I will go through them and salvage any pockets I can .

I too am the same way . You may also as a source for new fabrics check out walmart's fabric . One day the had a steel bin in the middle of the back cross isle full of materials fabric .All of which were a dollar a yard . I picked up the remainder of a roll 10 yards of some netting mesh that is commonly found as a liner laundry bag or zippered pockets in back packs . This same stuff I had looked at online and it was 850 a yard . I liked the color of the mesh netting as well grey . But I picked up 3 yards of some durable tan and brown material 2 days a go for 1 dollar a yard it was on the bottom of one of the fabric shelves . I frequent 3 walmarts as there are 2 within 10 min of my house and another one 20 min . jUST A LITTLE FYI .

Dave, it's so nice to see you back. Your channel is still one of my favorites. The best part about your videos is they are lengthy and full of cool innovative ideas, from bags made from sleeves to weather-tight shelters. Whenever I see a new post of yours, I relish the length of the videos compared to others, you know--something you can sink your teeth into. I always grab a drink and maybe a snack and sit back and enjoy. Other channels are morsels. Your channel is meat and taters and I appreciate the time you spend putting the videos together. If you started posting 5 minute videos I think I'd be disappointed; don't change a thing. Happy Birthday. Looking forward to more videos and cool ideas in October.
