Nigel Kneale was a highly acclaimed British screenwriter and novelist, best known for his pioneering work in the science fiction genre, particularly the creation of the iconic character Professor Bernard Quatermass. Born on April 28, 1922, in the Isle of Man, Kneale began his career as a journalist before transitioning to writing for radio, television, and film. He was brought up in Barrow-in-Furness.
His breakthrough came in the early 1950s with the BBC television series "The Quatermass Experiment," which introduced audiences to the brilliant and enigmatic scientist Professor Bernard Quatermass. This character, portrayed as a determined and sometimes morally conflicted scientist, became an enduring figure in British popular culture.
Kneale continued to develop the Quatermass character in subsequent television series, including "Quatermass II" (1955) and "Quatermass and the Pit" (1958-1959), each exploring themes of science, technology, and the supernatural. These productions were praised for their intelligent storytelling and social commentary, earning Kneale a reputation as a master of speculative fiction.
In addition to his work on Quatermass, Kneale penned numerous other scripts for television, including adaptations of classic novels and original dramas. He also wrote several acclaimed novels and contributed to feature films.
Throughout his career, Kneale's writing was characterized by its thought-provoking themes, sharp dialogue, and innovative storytelling techniques. He was a key figure in establishing science fiction as a serious genre in British television and film.
Nigel Kneale passed away on October 29, 2006, leaving behind a rich legacy of groundbreaking work that continues to influence writers and filmmakers to this day.

Despite my surname, I am actually a proud Cumbrian and it was great to read about this writers links to our county and Barrow in Furness ! every day is a school day it seems as I knew nothing about him. Many thanks for another splendid story.

I was about to say "but Barrow is in Cumbria..." - then realised it wasn't when this guy was born. My parents (from Kendal & Stavely) still think of themselves as being from Westmorland. I was born at Whitehaven hospital and grew up in Workington and Cockermouth.

We went to the IOM on The Waverley paddle steamer in the late 80s. Well, technically we went twice, but the first time we were at sea for an hour but still hadn't made it far off the Whitehaven coast as it was so rough so eventually turned back. Lots of people were terribly seasick -not helped by the smell of frying food from the restaurant below deck. The decks were awash - and not with seawater. I was up the top and was fine until a deckhand came round with a tin pail of Dettol and a filthy string mop saying "any in 'ere?" My Dad was outside looking over the rail when a lad next to him was 'hit' by something from the deck rail above. (I always think of this whenever I read that the explanation for the word 'chunder' is 'watchunder'...) A year later we tried again and this time the sea was like glass - flat calm both ways. The IOM was lovely - I went on the little train to Lady Isabella, the giant water wheel at Laxey. Do you remember sometime in the early '80s there was a notorious IOM trip from Cumbria where there was a huge storm on the way back and they were anchored off the port for about 20 hours as it was too rough to even come in to dock? I remember it on Border news at the time. Hope you feel better soon.

So, the charlatan makes a fool out of the guy with the real explanation by stealing his idea and lying to the people. This is an example of a writer that knows how to write a good story. The main character is ignorant and reprehensible, but the story is fantastic! I enjoyed every minute of it. As always, fantastic narration! I like how you change your voice for different characters. Hearing a person from Great Britain pronounce the words properly is amazing. You should hear how people butcher those words over here. Lol! My friend - "How do you pronounce that word?" Me - "How Tony Walker says it."

Absolutely loved' Quatermass and the Pit' as a child and recently re-watched it. The acting came over somewhat cheesy to this old embittered cynic, but the story still gives chills. Thanks for another atmospheric tale. Hope you feel all better soon!

I prefer the Victorian/Edwardian era stories. I prefer my supernatural to be spine chilling and creepy rather than the modern concept of fear/horror which mostly seems blood and gore and monsters and nastiness, so I am perfectly happy with out of copyright things

I loved your rendering of this story...as well as hearing of an Auld Creeeture that I've never heard of before. Thank you very much, Tony. Regarding copyrights---Stephen King lets young, newbie film makers do some of his stories for free, just to give them a leg up. I wonder if he'd let you do a couple of his short stories, rather than a whole novel, such as "The Shining". Of course, a podcast isn't film. Personally, I don't think Kings work lends itself to your expertise, but, that's just one old gal's opinion. It was great to sit with you for a bit on this Friday evening.

Yes another great upload, can't wait to listen to this later. huge thanks Tony. Nigel Kneale is one of my all time favourite writers, incredible talent. Quatermass and the Pit to me is the perfect combination of Science Fiction and the Occult, that scene when they're in the derelict bombed out house is still unnerving, it scared the crap out me as 10 year old kid.

This is why I love your channel; & maybe offer too personal comments to your ramblings, I just completely went down a bit of a “pyschogeography” research hole, which totally connects to a photography/poetry book I’ve been thinking of creating. As we all question how/where/why our artistic expressions matter, finding a category, directly linked to photography art at the TATE, it felt like encouragement to project forward (literally). So, thank you for your sharing, this lovely story of modernityconnected to mythic past, your ability to speak to different dialects, & share your version of them! I've just been listening to Hurley's 'Voices in the Valley' which was done for BBC. It doesn't seem to have been a printed work. At any rate, it is a collection of short stories narrated by different actors. Brilliant It can be found on KZfaq and online BBC. I really recommend.

My mind kept wandering during the story, but I listened to every word of the post story commentary. Just saying that to counterbalance anyone complaining about the discussion after the story ends. I've recently got a hankering for Nero Wolfe. I've been listening to the radio programs. They're kind of stupid but light and enjoyable for me. I got to wondering if the novels were as stupid as the radio dramas, so I bought the first Nero Wolfe, Fer-de-lance, in audio form from Barnes and Noble. Surprisingly I enjoyed it. I've always thought of Rex Stout as a man's writer. So then I wanted the second Nero Wolfe, The League of Frightened Men, but the only place I could find it in audio is Audible, and I don't buy from Amazon companies. My first thought was "Tony Walker!" My second thought was "too long." My third thought was "copyright." I guess I'll have to resort to reading it. Sigh!

I had always wanted to read Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein book but never got around to it. I listened to you narrate it while I was at work and it was AMAZING. I was wondering if you might be able to do more long ones of that sort? I know you’re busy with other podcasts (which I also listen to) soots a bit selfish of me to ask. 😂 I love hearing about your day to day life as well. Much love from America.

Thanks Tony. I've liked some Nigel Kneale's work, Quatermass 1,2 and 3 movies/productions were great however I didn't like Quatermass Conclusion (even though I'm a fan of Sir John Mills, who used to live just down the road) and the tepid Beasts. I really like your story telling voice and accents This has probably been asked a thousand times, ever thought of doing voice work for Audible? I'm listening to Herbert, Poe, Ballad, Lovecraft etc and classic gothic horror short stories at the moment and I think they would sound far better if you were voicing them.

You were talking about the Isle of Man can be seen from the coast where you are 😁 - when I drive to Dunany beach (very rocky - few dogs) - there is a huge stone chair called "the Madman's Chair" or "Cathair Áine". It looks out to the Isle of Man. The goddess Áine had a palace in the cliff. She is part of the sun diety combination and is either married to or the daughter of Manannan mac Lír. Sit on the stone at your peril. 😂

Tony, it sounds like you said that Quartermass Experiment was 1953 and subsequently you said the quarter mass and the pitt was 1950 . This apparent error might be in the way I was listening several things you said and this 1950 date might have been about something else . listen to what you have posted and see if it doesn't sound like that .

I think the only talent comparable , and yet still falling short, was William Peter Blatty reading his own novel, The Exorcist. Do you , or would you consider recording a specific work for a fee?
