Tairāwhiti Museum is located beside the Taruheru River. This river is one of the three main rivers of Tūranga / Gisborne and is thought to be named after the sweet smelling native moss that used to grow on the river banks. Photographs from the Tairāwhiti Museum's extensive historic collection are brought to life through animation and narration, showing how local life has changed both on and around the Taruheru River, spanning just over a hundred years of history. This video is one of the exhibits that can be found in Wyllie Cottage (built c 1872), located next to Tairāwhiti Museum. Produced by Norm Heke for the museum in 2016 as part of the Wyllie Cottage restoration project.

This video is a little gem. It is a shame the river was used as a dump early on.

When I was growing up it was pronounced Darby but as time has gone on and generations don't know (or probably care) who Lord Derby is... its now reverted to more commonly being pronounced Derby (Dur-bee) Street
