Madame President, your loyal subjects understand completely the concerns you have for your flock. We also can't help but worry for our feathered friends. Thank you so much for being a great example for us during these trying times ! You are truly an exceptional leader Honestly, it's my first winter with chickens and the winter prep video you put out a couple weeks ago really helped to relieve some of my concern. After watching it, I knew I was on the right track with my preparations. Thank you, ma'am. From a grateful Texan

It was brutally cold in southern Ohio. Their coop is insulated, partially. Last year I bought a coop heater that looks like a computer screen. No fire danger. So, it was on. They did fine and didn't seem distressed. I had to bring one in because she is missing feathers and I think she is being picked on by her sisters. She's starting to fill in. Take care out there. Now we have non stop rain. Ugh.

The snow storm hit East Tennessee and took out ALL the netting over my large front chicken run. Today it's 65 degrees and I'm trying to get it repaired before we get 2 inches of rain tomorrow. It was so cold that one of my girls Dolly Parton got poopy butt that froze her vent shut! A wam soak in epsom salts, a blow dry and a night in the house, she's good as new. So glad that storm is over!

That’s great news. I am also in East Tennessee. We got hit pretty hard and we still have quite a bit of inches of snow on the ground and I’m still running my faucets that’s been running for two weeks now so they won’t freeze and yes we’ve got rain coming in in a few hours I’m glad you got to help your precious chicken you know that made her happy … Blessings

Poor Dolly! She's so very lucky to have an attentive personal assistant like you. I'm just below you in Georgia and our break from the deep freeze brought immediate rain, dang it! I've had birds going in and out while we were holed up, and I was going to give all my floormats a really good soak in bleach before the rain started. Now they won't dry out before the next freeze hits. WHY can't chickens be trained to wipe their muddy feet when they come in?

I know what night you were talking about because it happened to us down in Southwest Washington the same night. My girls were okay until the wind started. All five ended up in the basement, and I'm actually glad because it turned into an ice storm and I was unable to get to their coop for a couple days - we live on a hillside. I don't think I would still have them all if I hadn't made that last minute decision to bring them to the basement. I don't actually have a garage so that was not an option. I've lived here since 1996 and only one time do I remember anything like this storm, and that was actually 1996.

Excellent advice all around! In a crisis, do whatever you have to do, rules be damned. Georgia got down to 12F°! My posh birds and I shared the warm room of my unheated home (soot on the ceilings makes me distrust the janky old gas heater), but I was out slogging in the frigid cold to care for my neighbor's five neglected birds. I insulated the coop in plastic and canvas and covered the drafty door with a velcro'ed shower curtain. Every morning, I put hot water in the bowl near my gate and awoke them with warmed spaghetti noodles. The hot water was already cooling by the time they followed me down to my place. The poor things richly appreciated a little love from someone.

I live in Western North Carolina. We got down to 9 degrees. Even though I have an Omlet Egglu, I brought my three backyard hens inside. I have a collapsible dog kennel, pee pads and straw. It worked. Now, one of my henx thinks she lives with me and comes to the back door to be let in. I gently redirect her to the Egglu.

The biggest change I am making for my girls is building a 8x12 four season room. They will have the option to go in and out of it as they wish. It will be a dry area for the Spring and Summer. In the winter I will add corrugated twin wall polycarbonate panels for the very cold days. I have a large netted area in a large 1/10 acre fenced area.

We also had bitter cold weather this past week with lots of ice and snow and sometimes zero temps! We ran a 150’ outdoor heavy duty extension cord to the coop and hopped up heated water containers and hooked up a radiant heater.

Down here in south central Texas it got down to 14f 😳 which is very unusual. I was a tad bit more than concerned about our chickens so had my grandson help me finish enclosing the chicken tractors while I cleaned & added more than normal bedding. We lost one elderly hen but I'm so relieved that the others did really well plus still giving 6 + eggs a day with no supplement heat or light. I'm learning they are a lot tougher than I thought they'd be when we started this part of our homesteading journey. 😊

After days of single digits & bitter wind chill....I brought a few of mine in. My Bielefelder rooster started to get frostbite as did my Marans hen on a long peek of her comb. I feel good about it. They are back out now & most of the flock was fine, the 4 youngest were laying daily without added light.

I only have 5 chickens so i broke the rules and set up an old large plastic kennel with pine shavings. Brought them inside for the coldest days and nights. My outside coop is small so i built a new inclosed run from Amazon but wasnt finished and my 55 gallon water barrel was not working then froze and pvc pipe disconnected. It was lots of work. Glad the temps are back to normal for this time of year in oklahoma. My husband thinks im funny because i have gotten no less than 4 to 5 eggs every other day and i say its all the love we give them. Lol my 10 year old daughter says they give her eggs because she and I love them so much.

I brought mine in, too! They didn’t like it, but I was able to sleep knowing nobody was getting frostbite. It was just bad because there were no breaks in the sub-freezing temps--all day and night for several days. If it was cold at night and above freezing during the day it wouldn't have been so bad.

With only an Eglu that we couldn’t lock our hens in for two weeks, and wind chills in the negative teens and twenties, we wheeled our small flock into the shop where we have a high powered shop heater, if needed. It’s up high and has a thermostat. We had not conn3cted the one and the Eglu so we could pretty easily roll the main unit. The ice storm fizzled so we put them back outside. They did very well but they were so happy to go back outside. I’m getting some pine pellets!! The ground that was severely dry last summer/fall is soaked like a sponge and the sump pump is running for the first time since last spring.

We had subfreezing temps too, because of the wind. My chickens stayed inside for 2 days, and I kept a panel heater going for my older chickens. I found one chicken standing in front of the panel with the appearance of someone standing in front of a fireplace😊 so I guess they liked it! They all came through fine, except one little rooster who had frostbite on his comb. I am glad you are feeling better and your chickens are fine!

I bundled the coop ahead with plastic and added lots of leaves and straw . There was plenty of birds so I didn’t worry about heat. I did look for eggs twice a day and change the ice cube back to water twice a day . Also a warm meal once a day until it got warmer. I did not let them out of the coop until it got above freezing

Every two hours, for a week, I went out to thaw any frozen water dishes. I bought about 10 straw bales just to put up against the coop and greenhouse tarp wrapped chicken tractor. We got in the minus zero where I live. Just checking on them a lot helps so you can fix any problems that are coming up.

We had temps that were negatives, and if not, the real feels were all negatives, for 10 days, and a few inches of snow. (Today is day 2 not negative but raining.) I had no water for 10 days but i was prepared for that and had filled jugs, bottles and totes so the chickens were good! And tg for the heated dog bowl!! The area the chickens are only got down to the 20s tg but it still sucked to take care of them in that. We don't normally have temps like that and i HATE the cold and snow. Every year i ask myself why i stay here!! But the next 10 days are supposed to be warmer but only 1 day of sun forecasted (and that will be out of 20 days). Winter needs to GO AWAY!

Hi Dahlia. I live at 6200 ft in the mountains of So Cal, so we never know what kind of winter we will get. This year has been unseasonably warm. Last year we were literally buried in snow. However, I do the same preps every year and they work great for us no matter what kind of winter we have and I hope these tips can help someone else. We have a covered run and my coop is under the run. The coop is insulated with a cedar shingle roof, has several inches of bedding on the floor and the whole roof line is open so there is plenty of ventilation, but no drafts in the coop. In the coop I have a reptile light attached to the ceiling. It is plugged into one of those thermo cube plugs. It turns the reptile light on when it gets down to 35 and off when the temp gets up to 45 so I don't have to run out there and turn it on. Plus the reptile light does not put off red light like a heat lamp. I like to add a bit of heat to my coop because I have several old girls and they seem to appreciate the extra warmth. I always find them sitting on the roost under the lamp. It doesn't keep the coop warm, but it does take a bit of the chill off. My other girls are young and I have a lot of large breeds so they are quite fine without the heat. I keep all my food in the run in metal cans and I have 3 of the heated nipple waterers from Premier One that do not freeze up and they keep the water very clean and free from algae. They hold a lot of water so I do not have to lug water from my house out to the coop daily. I do not have electricity in my coop so we ran some extension cords to my husband's near by shed and that works out well for what we need in the coop and run. Eventually I would like to have electricity run to the coop, but right now there are more pressing matters. As for the run, we bought 20x 6 ft clear tarps with grommets. Our run is a metal carport so we cannot staple plastic to it, but if yours is, that works well also. We wrap our run with the tarps using zip ties and bungie cords on the ends. They are re-usable and every year we use the same process for wrapping the coop and we are able to get it done very quickly. For the door to the run, which is made out of wood, we use a clear shower curtain liner and fold it in half and staple it to the door frame. The clear tarps let in light and sun, but blocks the snow, rain and wind. This has worked out very well for us as the chickens never have to stay in their coop, the run stays dry in all but the very worst storms (occasionally we do get a little water seeping in the sides of the run, but we just use our trusty pine pellets when that happens) and we have never had to deal with frostbite so far. I was recently given a small hanging heater like you have in your coop and I am going to hang that up for extra back up heat in case it would get down to single digits. We have been chicken keeping since 2001, so we pretty much have our winter prep routine down to a science at this point.

I'm in Nova Scotia Canada it gets very cold and snowy here. Both my coops are converted camper trailers, the Batchelor coop is a 16 foot long camper, the hen and bantams coop is 25 foot long. The bantams have their coop at one end the larger birds have the other and the medium size chickens get the middle part. I have 70 chickens of 20 different breeds. Some, like the Vietnamese h'mong, Ayam cemani, mosaics, silkies, frizzel, d'uccles, all are not cold hardy breeds so both campers are moved closer to the house and electricity is hooked up so there is heat in both coops. The electrical is all safe, it was installed for people for camping, how much safer do you need? I don't listen to other peoples opinions, I follow what I feel is right for my flocks. That's the great thing about having the coops mobile I can move them everywhere I need. Takes some work to move the runs though.

I spoil my chickens beyond belief and I don't care whether they need heat or not. They have two heat lamps in their run. One is directly over their dust bath and the other is over their perch. They have a heated panel inside of their Coop that they can snuggle up next to on cold nights. And they also have a heated perch in their run to warm their feet on cold winter days. They love it and it gives me pleasure to provide it for them! Attack me haters! 😂

The night we had -13 scared me. My girls stayed locked up inside in a coop (3 girls and a roo) or in a small barn (12 girls, some elder) for a week. I hauled a lot of hot water out for that week. Here in SE Wisconsin was a pretty rough week for us.we went from -4 during the day to -15 one night. 18 inches of heavy snow and 25 foot long white pine branches overloaded with snow crushing the large run fence and netting. I was checking on my girls every hour, most of them are older girls, I was so worried about them and I thought of you. There were a few days they all stayed in the coop so I was replacing water bowls every hour.I think there’s a tiny bit of frostbite on a couple of my larger comb girls, I treated with calendula salve. first time ever experiencing frostbite in my flock, in 10 years 😞 to make matters worse, I checked the nest box when putting the girls to bed and instead of finding frozen eggs there was a small possum in the nestbox! Gahhh I almost locked them up with a possum overnight 😬 Rough week Glad we’re all ok
