Reaction to Papa was a rolling stone by The Temptation. This is an incredible song and one of its kind.It was so unlike Motown and a real switch for the label. But the song with all its attributes- bassline horns, stings and lyrics, will go down as one of the greatest songs ever.

Actually Harri, we were so spoiled with fabulous music that this was just another great song in a long, long like of great songs. It was a privilege many of us took for granted to hear music of the 60s 70s 80s as it came out.. The temptations were a funk favorite of mine, so many good tunes

The music we heard in the '60's and '70's was just the norm. It wasn't until now that we (now in our '60's and '70's!) realize what an incredible and creative time we grew up in.

Wherever I am, when I hear that opening high hat and bass riff, I’m immediately transported to an early fall morning driving with my dad to visit his brother at the old farm in rural Kansas. Dad let me tune the radio and this song came up. We’re heading east, the morning was clear and cold, vivid reds and purples in the clouds as the sun rose. Dad was old school country music, Hank Williams, the Carter family, but I think he appreciated this song because of the story, because he didn’t make me change the station. I’m not sure that was the first time I heard it, but that memory is etched forever in my mind.

Not far to be the greatest song ever written in music history. When I listened to it as it was released (I was 14) I thought that extreme sophistication had found its master in soul. Norman Whitfield was a genius and the Temptations voices sound diamonds. Even the lyrics were stunning.

Love the Temptations music. This is part of the Motown era & they had a lot of hits in the 60's - 80's such as "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", "I Wish It Would Rain", "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)", "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone", "I Can't Get Next To You", "Treat Her Like A Lady", "My Girl" etc. They were known for their harmonies, choreography & dress style.

Actually this was the last song composed by the Super Hit writing Team of Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield and wasn't written for the Temps but a group called the Undisputed Truth who had their version reach # 63 on the charts. The Temps decided to record it and put their own spin on it and won a Grammy for their version. Absolutely awesome musically!

Writer/producer Norman Whitfield and co-writer Barrett Strong wrote and produced some of the greatest Motown songs of the late '60s and early '70s, including "Ball of Confusion," "Cloud Nine," "Psychedelic Shack" (all by the Temps) as well as the superb "Smiling Faces Sometimes" by the Undisputed Truth, along with many other earlier classics like "I Heard It Through the Grapevine."

Harri you are so right about the first affects of hearing just the opening bass line of this song. The music built layers, and as you said spoke before the first line was sang. The Temptations was my favorite Motown group from that time. However there was such a tremendous wealth of talent, and all was exceptional. This song was definitely something different, but for me not completely unexpected after the Temptation's "Ball Of Confusion" from 1970.

I had the Best of The Temptations on 8 track in the early 70s, loved the whole tape. My buddies would pile into my car and make fun of me playing it, just a bunch of rock and roll type white boys. I kept playing it and before long they stopped making fun of me and were into it as much as I was. So much talent came out of Motown it boggles the mind.

Kendrick’s was the greatest crooner of all time, Ruffin( not with them here) was the greatest beggar Dennis Edwards was the baddest soul brother of all time . I saw him with the Revue in Chicago a few years back. I told my daughter to listen carefully . I was certainly going to give him a break as he was approaching 60 years. The man hit it so far out of the park we were floored! Just being in the presence of such royalty was something that has made me happier for life. I await the soul revelation and dearly pray it comes back instead of the trash out today
