The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

What a great performance! It is nice to see Paul Williams taking the lead. However, Eddie Kendricks is a standout with his performance on "Autumn Leaves" and especially "September Song". All five men shine in this number.

I love how the Motown acts would come on the Sullivan Show and sing their hit records. Then later in the show they would come back and perform a standard with finesse.

@@moretimeneeded56 Is it possible they recorded some of these but they were not released? Motown had something called "Quality Control" meetings and it has been written some songs WERE recorded by different acts, then the QC folks decided which was the version to release.

However there has been lots of previously unreleased tracks released over the past few years and the tracks I mentioned haven’t appeared. Whether they are still in the vaults I don’t know. Maybe? And yes the Quality Control meetings are kinda infamous and have been written about extensively.

In my opinion they are the best soul r&b group of all time, thier would be no Delfonics, Stylistics or Blue Magic with out the Temps and Eddie’s great falsetto voice!!

Eddie had a successful solo career after he left the The Temptations; none of the other " falesettos" came even close. Eddie is the greatest of them all because his resume' far exceeds all of them!

On this particular date 9-28-1969, The Tempts were Sullivan's special guests. Also they celebrated Sullivan's 67th birthday. Two months earlier the Tempts were invited at Julie Nixon's 21st birthday at the white house.

If I remember correctly, Paul wasn't able to join the birthday celebration because of his exhaustion due to sickle cell. I remember the pictures of the birthday and they were all there except for King Paul.

I have seen this performance but differently, with the two songs separated for some reason. I didn’t know it was a medley but the stage setup and their outfits were the same so I knew they were connected somehow. I’m glad they released it this way! I like it even more!!

I always hoped that Motown would one day release these Ed Sullivan performances on CD. They are all simply SPECTACULAR!! This medley in particular is such a standout. Their harmonies are timeless.

Motown on the Ed Sullivan Show plus he had other entertainments on his show. He had live animal show, gospel, Christmas, rock n roll, psychedelic, Topo Gigio, the Muppets, knife throwers, sword swallowers, dog acts, jugglers, zoo entertainers, etc on his show.

@@mikec6822 Sadly the temptations had no choice in separating themselves from David Ruffin. Despite his prodigious talent and charisma, Ruffin was a drug addict as early as his time with temptations in the 60s and his problems manifested themselves with unpredictable,erratic behavior: missed shows,ego trips,general unreliability and in his personal life with women: violence. The temptations were an highly talented incredibly successful mainstream musical act and Ruffin's behavior threatened to unravel it all. His replacement the super talented Dennis Edwards not only brought his amazing abilities as a performer but at the time a much needed stability to the group.

@ Derek Dudes I believe the Temptations are singing a combination of composer Johnny Mercer songs "Autumn Leaves" and "September Wind". In the sixties and early seventies when motown acts like the Temptations and Diana Ross & Supremes appeared on television not only did they sing their hits and other current music for young people but also they would perform pop standards and Broadway show tunes for older people watching the same show.Television in those days was much more "generalized' each show offering different music (often performed by the same artist) for different people in the same audience.

This is a medley of three much older songs related only by same season. September in the Rain was written by Harry Warren and Al Dubin. It was introduced in a Hollywood musical of 1937. Autumn Leaves was composed by Joseph Kosma with original lyrics by Jacques Prévert in French, and later by Johnny Mercer in English. The original title was Les Feuilles mortes ("The Dead Leaves") for a 1946 French film. Jo Stafford made the first English-language recording in July, 1950. The medley then goes to September Song composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Maxwell Anderson. It was introduced by Walter Huston singing in a Broadway musical of 1938.

They recorded an album in 1965 called "In a Mellow Mood" which consisted of standards from the great American song book. If you liked this performance you will love that album. Motown wanted to expand the appeal of its artists beyond teenagers, so many of the acts recorded standards, including The Supremes ("The Supremes Sing Rodgers and Hart"), Mary Wells, The Miracles, and the Four Tops.

One of Ruffin's greatest vocal performances was "What Now My Love" on an album of standards that the Temptations recorded called "Mellow Mood". In stands today, in 2023, as one of the greatest records that Motown ever produced and showcased the Temptations as one of the most versatile male groups that America ever produced.

I love the Temptations music. However, this song is corny, and not true to their musical style! In Berry Gordy's zeal to cross over, forced this monstrosity on their true fans! Paul looks like he's in pain, singing this abomination.

I know that is your opinion but that is very rude to say. What exactly is "black people music?" These are some popular jazz standards and if you don't consider jazz to be "black people music" then you need some lessons in BAM ("black American music," as noted by brother Nick Payton.) JAZZ IS NOT JUST FOR WHITE PEOPLE and most of the greatest pioneers in jazz were black Americans from ragtime & big-band to cool jazz & Bebop to that smooth jazz/neo-soul you hear today!

My brother: Motown was named "The Sound of Young America" for a reason. It was always Gordy's strategic approach to reach as many as people as possible. The Temptations could sing anything and they opened the doors for Michael Jackson, Prince and every fake so-called hip-hop artist who is driving Bentley's in neighborhoods where they don't live! The Temptations had their own television special, mini-series, Broadway musical and a successful 60-year run. Every race loves their music and that's the way it should be.
