A labor of love right there. Beautiful! I am hankering for this exact setup. It is such a shame because not many in my family feels the same. I am to the point that I want to set one up in the backyard so I get to enjoy it anyway, and I live in suburbia where I am sure my neighbors will think I am crazy. 🤣 I would like to line the inside walls with Havelock wool insulation and get a cute stove. That’s where everyone would find me most of the time.

We have a canvas exterior frame cabin tent we set up on a platform. We put a spike at the corners to set the pole over to keep the frame from shifting in wind. A lag bolt would also work. We build the platform every time we set up and is made to move. We wrap the tent with clear plastic on 3 sides to enclose heat and reduce condensation inside. Bringing the plastic down to ground level keeps wind and cold from getting under the tent and keeps the floor warmer. You could also use homesote skirting in a more permanent setup. We tented in winter at 20 below during deer season. We used large spring steel paper clips to hold plastic sheeting in place over the poles. Our fourth side, or front is made of homesote walls, not on a platform, using a steel pipe frame. You could also enclose your porch in clear plastic, plastic tarps, or canvas, held in place using spring steel paper clip clamps attached to the fly. A sheet of plastic attached to a wall where you cook protects the canvas and can be removed and washed. This is our kitchen and place for our wood stove. If you put down indoor/outdoor carpeting remnants and attach them with duct tape, it makes the floor warmer and nicer to walk on. We used Humphrey propane wall lights for light as well as some heat but if you have a generator, I would go with LED lighting. We used steel clothes hangers formed in "s" shapes as hooks inside the tent to hang things over the pipe, They can rust. If you know someone who works for the power company and can get you a section of scrap aluminum wire discarded after a job with multiple strands of aluminum wire, they make better "S" hooks. You have a nice set up but these are things we learned to make a better camp.

I've set these up tons of times. It's far easier to put the legs on one long side first. Then it will be on an angle. Then put the legs on the opposite side in on at a time. We found it to be easiest to also start at the middle and work outward. Just a thought.

You are right, that is the recommended method. Our tent is 12x12 so really no long side. At the time it seemed like the best way to set it up with the rain fly already in place. We have had it set up for two years now. If and when we take it down, I will try that way setting it back up. Thanks for watching!

@@tommmy1313 You can interpret "A FEW HOURS" any way you would like. I didn't keep track, but certainly between 8 and 12 hours. It was built before lumber prices went through the roof, and I had some materials on hand. As far as the rain fly is concerned, for a long term set up like ours, it is a must. Even though the tent is water, mildew and fire resistant, we still want to protect it. @@mytwelveacres3071 Yeah that’s what I thought I wish I could build a base and fly like this Looks so elegant I want to move in 😆 So there is no mold mildew or anything else going on after a year? Sounds great I think I made up my mind about the tent I’m in California close to coast and we do have Marine Layer moisture and sometime heavy rains.. I assume the tent without the fly would be considered repellent but not 100% rain proof? I’m thinking leaving it set up for long term like yours But the whole base and fly structure is not happening Instead used pallets and some wood sheets on top have to do Think there rain proof tents out there like the one you got? Or can it be “ made” proof with let’s say silicone sprays or something alike? What ya think It’s a lot of questions I know I’ll find a way Thanks for sharing!!

@@tommmy1313 I think most canvas wall tent manufacturers sell their tents as water resistant to some degree. I think you would be better off getting a cheap poly tarp from your local building supply than spraying anything on your tent. The beauty of canvas is, it is made to be able to breath, allowing moisture to escape. Good luck on your project and thanks for watching!

Hey Priya thanks for watching. We had them make our tent 12x12 which is not a stock size. We had them make the side walls 10 inches taller as well. Our rainfly was made to fit our tent with a 4 foot extension on the front and and 1 foot overhangs on the back and sides. Davis tent made sure the opening on the rainfly lined up with the stove jack on the tent.The windows were placed to our specifications. Hope that helps!

Hey Gerald, there are grommets along the bottom edge of the tent. We wrapped that edge over the deck and used stainless screws and washer to fasten them to the deck thru the grommet holes. hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Your work is really beautiful! I am fixing to build something similar out west in the northern California wine country. We will use it for our own personal use and also rent out for weekend "Glamping in the wine country". I've only watched a few of your videos so far and plan to watch most of them in the future. One thing I noticed that I have not seen an explanation for... When you originally put the a-frame in place, if was flush sitting on the deck. Then later, it was propped up on blocks by about 4 inches or so. What was the reason for the modification?

Hey JP24, Good catch on that! At some point in the planning stage I ended up with a bad dimension. I built the frame before I actually received the tent and rainfly. I found that, after receiving the tent, it was going to be too close to the ridge pole framing. My remedy was to use those blocks to gain the needed height. We are in the FINGER LAKES region and our property was a vineyard many years ago, still lots of feral grapes growing. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching Alissa! We purchased our tent from DAVIS TENT. They are a great company to work with and will make your tent to your specifications. They do make stock tents, but tent size, window placement, screens, wall height, stove jack and its placement, as well as the rain fly size, are all things you can change to your needs. Our tent is 12 x 12 with a 4 foot extension on the RAIN FLY. Both are custom to what we needed. I did not have any plans and just made the deck and log frame to fit our tent. We really enjoy our tent and have stayed in it in all kinds of weather and have always been comfortable. Good luck to you and your family on your tenting adventure.

Hey Jimmy, zoning laws here don't allow me to build anything larger than 12'x12' without a permit so I designed around that and built the deck 12'x12' . I then had the tent made to fit my deck. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

I’m not sure they would be strong enough to hold the tent in strong winds or with and a snow load. The brackets that come with the tents are for 1 inch conduit. I don’t think a 1 inch diameter wooden rod is strong enough

I love it! How did you get the tent bottom edge secured to the wooden floor though? I love the look of the wooden floor inside rather than the canvas floor.

Hey Paula, I used stainless screws thru the grommets on the edge of the tent. The edge of the tent overlaps the deck and that helps to keep the weather out.The tent has a sod clothe that goes on the inside of the tent. Thanks for watching!

We've had it up for 18 months now, thru all kinds of weather, with no problems. I'm sure many people do live in them part or even full time. This tent is perhaps a little small at 12 x 12 feet for full time living. A larger tent would make it much easier to do so I'm sure. Thanks for watching!

The tent is 12’x12’. The deck is a bit larger to accommodate the overhanging rain fly. The A frame was made specifically to fit this tent and rain fly. The tent and rain fly was a special order size from Davis tent. They have many great packages for tents. Check them out!

You don’t need a grinder. Just leave each pole in the vise and give it a quick file job..takes seconds.

My original intent was too build a cabin on the deck. After looking into the cost of how I wanted to build it, "not just a shack in the woods"... The cost of the tent and rain fly seemed rather reasonable. Besides, the ambiance of a CANVAS WALL TENT can't be beat.. Thanks for watching!

Sorry if this is an ignorant question. I looked through your comments to see if anyone else asked, lol. Could exterior, pressure treated plywood be used under the surface of the tent?

Hey Cheryl, I have for sure seen where plywood has be used on the interior of tents. Mostly just on the wall portion .Not sure I would want to use pressure treated though. Thanks for watching

The tent is under a rainfly to protect it from the elements. Over time the sun, rain and especially snow can adversely affect the cotton tent fabric. It is way cheaper to replace the rain fly than to replace the tent. We have had our tent setup for almost four years and it is still in great shape. Thanks for watching!

For us it's a permanent setup. But you could absolutely use it for short term camping. With some practice it only takes a short time to set it up. These tents are bulky and heavy so you probably would want to carry then too far. Thanks for watching!
