ottoman empire always seemed so cool to me, i think its the last great old empire of the world. they definitely werent the legitimate successors to rome, but i think they were the last true empire in the same way rome was... does that make sense?

What makes the Ottoman Empire so great is that it has ruled 72 different nations, many different civilizations and nations with different religious beliefs for centuries in a fair way. Today, if the Ottomans had not ruled those countries for centuries, many cultures and civilizations would have disappeared from the stage of history.

Constantinople was only a very small part of the Bosphorus strait. It was comprised of the Golden Horn and some other land, so you won’t be able to see it on a map of this scale.

Turkey didn't start in 1299. The name was used much prior to this date, dating back to the 6th century, but the usage of this term for Anatolia was already apparent in the 11th century with the rise of the Seljuks.

The Ottoman Empire in the Russian version is the Osman Empire. "Ataman" the head of the Cossacks, the words are borrowed from the Crimean Tatars.

@@tarkavcoglu7703 I'm a Turk and we didn't helped Iceland in fact we raided there. The pirates who was working for Ottoman Empire raided and kept Iceland for a time. We've helped Ireland, sent them food and gold to save them from extinct. And while people of Ireland was dying, Queen Victoria didn't even helped her own people. And sent letter to Sultan and said don't send more than 1000 golds, because it would hurt Queen's reputation if our Sultan send more gold than her. Our Sultan Abdulmecid initially wanted to send 7000 golds but only sent 1000 because of Queen. In fact England closed the ports to prevent ships from docking and bring supplies. Ottoman ships had to deliver food and gold in secrecy. That's why Irish people still loves us unlike the rest of Europe.

They're not written in the history books because they stopped at that; the backwater of Europe. The British, French, German and Russian Empires all turned into powerful modern states. This cannot be said of Turkey despite its prominent history.

@@3d8dmusic85 that's pretty much the way of forming an empire. or can you show me one that formed pacifically without killing anyone? that's not something exclusive to the ottomans, every great nation, past or present did that at some point. also, you cannot take the armenian genocide as a leitmotiv of the ottoman politic. it happened in the last 2 years of the empire's existance, when basically, it wasnt even an empire anymore. as much as terrible as it is, you cannot identify the ottomans as the people who killed 1.5 million armenians, just like you cannot identify the germans as the nazi. there are 5 centuries oof history before that.

You are right brother. I read comments on other video from a Saudi Arabien that North Africans and Syrians are cultural Arabs and not from genetic. He called them fake Arabs. That's make me very angry. Over hundred years ago they was Arab enough to fight against Ottomans? British people like the evil Lawrence from Arabia called they are Arabs to split the Ottoman Empire. Later they splited the Arabs in different weak countries. It's an evil game of British and French people. @@ahmetozkan438 That is true, yes, but why fault them? Greece obviously knew they alone were no match for the Ottomans, so they did the logical thing, and made allies out of the other great powers. Doing so isn't unheard of throughout history. For instance, the American Revolution would have failed if not for military aid from the French. What I'm saying is, alliances and good diplomacy are pivotal to any nation with military ambitions, especially one as small as Greece, and they outmanuevered the Ottomans in that aspect. Crying foul is pointless when it comes to winning wars. Ethnic Cleansing? Greece still had upwards of 400,000 Muslims by the end of the First World War, and they weren't expelled until the population exchange mutually agreed upon with Turkey. Today, Greece has a notable Muslim minority in places such as Komotini, while there are no Christian communities in Turkey even close to that size. If we're to talk about ethnic cleansing, then explain the Istanbul Pogroms of 1955? I'm not aware of the terms of the treaties you are referring to, but if they're as you state, then I agree that Greece shouldn't militarize those islands, given their proximity to the Turkish Mainland, and the heavy disputes over territorial waters in the Aegean. But war will solve nothing expect revive generations of hatred between the two countries, and seriously disrupt global shipping. There's also the issue that Turkey and Greece are both NATO members, and under article 5, an attack on one member is an attack on them all, so Turkey will have the US, Canada, and the majority of Europe opposing them in combat. It's far too great a risk for some small islands.

Bosnia was de jure part of the Ottoman Empire between 1878 and 1908. Austria-Hungary only formally annexed it in that year, technically it was only occupied by A-H.
