Professor Ruiz, UCLA department chair and Premio del Rey prize for best book in Spanish history before 1580 for his Crisis and Continuity: Land and Town in Late Medieval Castile, was speaker for the UCLA History Alumni Faculty Lecture, cohosted by the UCLA Alumni Association and UCLA Department of History. Ruiz spoke to an audience of more than 80 history department alumni and guests. Watch his lively and engaging presentation.

I was lucky enough to have Professor Ruiz for two separate classes while attending UCLA. The guy is an intellectual powerhouse and is one of the quintessential historians of the twentieth century. Add to this the fact he is a phenomenal person. He loves all his students and gets to know each and every one of his 400+ students a quarter by name. He gives out chocolate on exam days. I liken him to Jaime Escalante in the type of impact he's had on the lives of his students. Thank you Teo!

Germany had some of the most horrific witch trials. In Bamberg there was a witches prison notorious for torture and and execution.

This Gentleman is very articulate and I love it. As a Pagan I very much wish to live in peace with everyone no matter what the believe or what and who they believe in. The past is painful but let us learn from it and approach the future so it will never happen again. Blessed Be )o(

Both arguments are correct. Even though modern medicine did not exist at the time and yes, their were no major differences between herbal healers and doctors of the time. Still, the men healers accused women healers for one reason, to eliminate competition. Greed is an ancient disease that thrived throughout history and has made a place in our world still this very day.

If i am not mistaken, the author Teofilo Ruiz refers to is Carlo Ginzburg who wrote the Good Walkers, is also known as The Night Battles..its an excellent book..

Rulers and governments have always used licensure and guilds to limit the spread of knowledge, especially in healing arts and religion. Even the builders of the pyramids were restricted by tradr guilds to prevent the dilution of their skills.

The healers were often midwifes as well. And there are many accounts of midwifes/healers being persecuted because they were blamed for the deaths of the babies delivered and mothers in labor.

part 1 During the medieval era there was limited medical knowledge or facilities, and there was no form of insurance. such events as the black death, were devastating and there was no means of minimising their terrible effects on the lives of people in that era. access to doctors and medicines was minimal. women were expected to produce cures, for most ailments as part of their houskeeping. Wise women also used herbs for this purpose.

How did people reconcile the fact that most of the people accused of being witches were in fact very poor and disadvantaged? Clearly signing a pact with the devil did not bring them any material wealth or advantages. How did they get around that? Is it just a case of conveniently overlooking those bothersome details when they wanted to get rid of a useless old woman whom no one wanted?

It's more about accusing people of wrong-doing. If something goes wrong like a death, people look for someone to blame. The fact that the person is poor would be a reason for doing it - because they are bitter about being poor. Not all witch accusations were against the poor. In the beginning many accusations were directed upwards at the powerful in the community. In anthropology it is said that accusations of witchcraft happen along the fault lines in social connections, where connections are either weak or where there is already tension or resentments.

It was satanists who actually carried out the accusations to distract from their own debauchery. Hedgewitches were the only ones who could see who satanists were - ergo- they were to be eliminated and made to look the villains while leaving the villains to bask as victims.... ie Asia Argento.

what I don't understand is if the devil was supposed to give these women whatever theyl wanted, why were they so poor and destitute? It din't seem to be working, dit it? Did this no one occur to any;one that none of these so-called wsitches did not benefit in any way from their alleged pact with the vevil?

Perhaps because it was believed that the Devil would not actually give witches what they were promised. You've got to keep in mind that he would usually be pictured as a trickster, one who seduces/manipulates the victim into doing these supposed harmful acts.

The witches sabbath itself was where the cash and prizes resided. The trickster element is also there but I think the supposed witches gatherings themselves were envisioned as a sinful bacchanalia where forbidden pleasures were experienced by the witches. Kinda like say, a heroin addict, who may steal or do other dirty deeds out in the world to secure his or her ticket to paradise for an evening. But most looking at him slouched on the stained mattress would not say he lies in riches...although the user during the intoxication is in a state of pure euphoria.

I wonder if there is not a parallel between the range from superstitious religion to "lofty, ethical" religion of the "learned elites" that he mentions, and the current divide between the "evangelical" end of the church in the US and the rest of the church. It might be interesting to discuss the homophobic, xenophobic, misogynist stance of much of the evangelical side as a superstitious form of religion. Even more so when he talks about scapegoating in times of anxiety and insecurity.

The interesting thing is that this witch hunt was not in the medieval age, called the dark age, but in the new age called the enlightened age, this horror and brutality took place. So enlightenment is not enlightenment but just a deception.

It's early modern but pre-Enlightenment. It's associated rather with religious upheaval following the Reformation.

Lots of industry (clothing, building, mining, metal goods, woodworking): it was smaller-scale mostly craft production, but still employed a substantial minority.

Being articulative dosen't means history losing its facts. The theories he put foward in regards to witchcraft may reflect his idea towards it but historical records from reliable historians say otherwise.

which continent are you referring to, which country are you talking about, in which century and which church? Stopping quacks is not about a "medical monopoly", and a government that insists midwives have training is not persecution of "tradition", be it Louis xiv or modern USA.

The theory on midwives being targeted has been completely negated. Infact, midwives were rarely accused and were often involved as witnesses in witch trials.

Too much interpretation without facts. Witch hunts were led almost only in protestant societies. And now home work: find modern applications of witch hunt classical methods around you (there is a lot of examples) Hint: modern witch hunt does not need any witch craft nor religion.

This is not really true. There were a 1000 years of catholic murders and inquisitions before Protestants came to be. By the time Protestantism took hold, witch hunts were mostly over in Europe (but not the US).

You must believe Jacob Soprengers book The Witches Hammer. This poor man hated all women. Seems like you do so too. Witchcraft is nothing but another religion. Christianity as known today is man made by Emperor Constant and his bishops in 325 after the death of Jesus.
