Loved the video! I, as a German, know a bit about the home video history over here, which is truly one of the weirdest I've ever heard of. I don't remember everything though, so forgive me, if I say something wrong or leave it out. When the film was brought to the censors, the FSK/bpjm for an official rating it was banned and received heavy controversy. What's weird about this though is, that in the report of the censors, they wrote things, that weren't even in the movie, most notably "extreme scenes of t0rture". What is also important to know is, that ALLEGEDLY the air condition was broken that very hot day and some of the censors didn't even bother showing up. After then it was released radically cut on VHS (to about 70 min) as "Kettensägenmassaker", which is the word for word translation of "Chainsaw massacre". Yet, it still didn't even receive an actual rating, just a "juristisch geprüft: strafrechtlich unbedenklich", which meant, that it wasn't allowed to be sold in stores, you could only order it per mail basically. After that, it was even ceized by the court, which meant, that you were neither allowed to distribute nor show the uncut version in cinemas, or you'd be fined or put into prison. Then through the course of the years the uncut version was banned again and again, the latest being 2010. But 2010, they had already allowed much worse movies to release uncut, the perfect example would be the arguably more violent Marcus Nispel 2003 remake, produced by Michael Bay. This begs the question: What's the German censors beef with TCM? But luckily now the rights are with turbine, who have released around 20 variants of the film on various formats. Bless 'em for that. I myself only own the HDR-less 4k steelbook, which I do think has the grindhousiest look out of all the 4ks still. Keep up the great work man, love these types of vids! 🤘

Growing up in the 80s, my uncle had a little shop next to his house selling knickknacks and gemstones and whatnot, and like every other store, rented VHS tapes, and my cousin and I had access to this, among all kinds of other classic horror flicks, at a very young age. This one, especially, holds a very special place in my memories, sneaking it out of the shop to watch it on a tiny TV in an old camper in back of the shop. It doesn't hold up that great, but at the time it was radical. 😂

Good times, Bruder. I'm 26 years old myself, a millennial, but growing up home-schooled in a small summer town, I have a lot of memories like that. Most of my social circle is made up of men and women ten or twenty years older. My generation just gives me a blank look when I talk about old actors or bands. Steve Lynch of Autograph is my guitar hero, and even only a handful of old punks and metalheads know him. His solo in the song 'Built for Speed' and his solo piece 'Hammerhead' touched the core of my soul. Ethereally cosmic. Outdoes Van Halen's 'Eruption' and I will die on that hill.

Great video Jeff. To add to your comments. The first release in the late 1970s was in fact the full film on Super 8mm (on five 400 ft reels) by Iver Films UK which was initially sold directly to customers but quickly withdrawn and issued as a rental - this, I believe, was the first home release of the film anywhere in the world. (Since Chainsaw was banned in the UK and was only granted a limited regional release with an 'X' certificate, for many years this Super 8 version was the way many were first to view the film). Iver then released a slightly edited version on four reels along with the 17 minute abridged version you mentioned. An alternate abridged version on Super 8 was also released by Derann Films. A few years later with the advent of home video Iver then issued the pre-cert VHS / Beta versions. To my mind the Super 8mm releases - particularly the five reeler which is an extreme rarity - are the holy grail of home media releases of Chainsaw since they appeared before 'home media' was even a thing. Furthermore the grindhouse aesthetic of the film is heightened on 8mm. Now here we are in 2023 and the blu-ray and 4K discs by Second Sight bring the UK releases full circle with use of the original artwork.
@TheNickandmichelle
@TheNickandmichelle Жыл бұрын
That's correct! I had the 4-reel, slightly edited feature from Iver Films. One very unique thing about the super 8 versions is that it contains the original "BRYAN STONE PICTURES" logo, which was super cool & creepy, and is how the movie started in the theaters back in 1974. Also on super 8 was the original trailer (available from Canterbury Films in the U.S.)

The first time I watched this as a child was on my dad's old VHS. It was a very worn old ex video store copy. The colors were washed out and it was almost black & white. I had to sneak it out when he was at work to watch it alone, and it absolutely terrified me. It felt like I'd found a snuff movie, and because I wasn't allowed to watch it I had to keep the trauma to myself. The hook scene disturbed me for days after. Good times.

Other than Halloween, TCM, is the first movie that literally left me scared out of my wits as a kid! I can still remember where I was the first time I saw it. And how terrifying it was. The fact that the idea of this movie came from a true story (although greatly changed), made it even more terrifying. It was the closest movie in non true horror film to remind me of the Faces Of Death films… Side fun fact, I have worked with and met Charles Band on multiple Full Moon films. Did some acting and was a producer on a couple of his films. Met him in Hollywood, California at his studios in 2015. Working on the film we did was a blast! This movie costing so little means it has continued to just make massive profit, every time they put out a new release of it. Hollywood could learn a thing or two, by going back and looking at these small budget movies. Figure out what worked so well. And try to duplicate it. Instead of these ballooning budgets approaching $300 million dollars regularly on tentpole films now. We have watched a bunch of major IP’s this year, end up in the red. Even after hundreds of millions in theatre ticket sales. If I worked at the studios, I would be looking to get back to the basics of film making and do what Blumhouse has managed to do. Small budgets. Good, mid sized returns. All profitable in the end. 🤷‍♂️
@cameron3578

The thing is, you can produce what the things that makes a small budget movie work. It's just a perfect storm of events that leads to it working.
@DangerousDevilOfficial
@DangerousDevilOfficial 11 ай бұрын
@@cameron3578 sometimes yes, a perfect storm of events can make or break a film. Just like anything else. However, you greatly improve your chances of success when you keep modest budgets. And make a good film on a known IP. All of those things help to give a film the best chance to succeed. Sometimes things like Covid or the current strike derail even the best of ideas for films. But generally, studios win more than they lose, by putting the odds in their favor to succeed.

@@Bigdogeatkid you're right but this usually only applies to cinephile directors like Stephen Spielberg who had carte blanche early in their career to have a shark eat a young boy and in a completely different movie have people's heads explode and melt off their skull in graphic fashion only to be gifted with a PG rating. The PG rating itself smacks of wildly inconsistent standards back then.

@@noahalliston3838 The good ol' days. Take The Land Before Time series by Don Bluth. The first five movies' artwork really captured the primeval atmosphere and savagery of The Dinosaur Age and it didn't shy away from mature subjects, such as the death of a parent and having to fend for yourself without adult help. Then the suspense and danger got toned down and the art is less detailed and more bright and bubble-gummed than My Little Pony.

Regarding Germany: Yes, the movie first got a „proper“ rating (FSK18) for home media in 2011 (comparable to an R rating in the US or BBFC18 in the UK) the movie was always available before 2011 in Austria in stores or via mail order. So as a German you could always order the movie in an Austrian online shop and let it deliver to your German address - which shows that the German law (for „protecting“ the youth) is outdated since the early 2000s. (Of course there were also bootlegs floating around on flea markets e.g. with alternative titles like „The beast with the leatherface“ such that the police (which just used a list with the titles of „forbidden media“ would not identify the movie „easily“) The problem with this movie was a little bit that it was a reference title for the German index of „forbidden media“. It was one of the first titles which was added to this „index“. So some people feared that it could have a domino effect for freeing other movies from this index (which it had). In 2011, it was the first movie which got removed for the index (I think Turbine media started in 2007/2008 to get the movie off the index) and the biggest problem is that the German law does not clearly specify the process of getting media off the „index“, so it was a little bit of trial and error which people/federal departments/courts they had to involve. (Also one reason why turbine media has released an edition/repack of the movie nearly every year since 2011 - because they need to get back the court fees to „free“ the movie in Germany 😂😂)

@PatrickVogt314 Жыл бұрын
Since then nearly all the other horror classics (Evil Dead, All of the Friday the 13th movies, Nightmare on Elm Street movies, Chucky, Dawn of the Dead (Day is still on the index)) were removed from the index - the others are still available via Austria. Some people claim that it is due to the fact that the youth will not watch „old“ movies (from the 70s and 80s „old“ is not my term) such that the movies are no „threat“ for the youth anymore.

I saw the original film in the theatre as a kid, and because of it's nature, and being the first of its kind, it left an impression, but Last House on the Left, the original, scared me more..

Love this series, especially the inclusion of Super 8 versions and foreign releases! Please do more of them. Great video!

I had the last vhs and still have the 2006 DVD steelbook. I'm considering the Black Maria boxset. Given that the 50th anniversary is next year, I'm waiting to see what comes out...

I have a copy of the 2006 steelbook release, which I bought in 2007. A little beat up now and I have no way of watching it, but it's still one of my most prized posessions.

Nice video history 👍, but the extras on the Pioneer DVD were all originally introduced on the Elite Laserdisc. I still own this LD today, it was the first release with deleted scenes.
