Sea World Ohio was a hit with guests from day one but plans and agreements set in place that initially would lead to the park’s success would ultimately prove to be its downfall.

I grew up in northeastern Ohio in the 70's and 80's. I moved to California in 96 and have recently learned that my entire childhood has become an abandoned dystopian nightmare. I always remember the Super Friends ski show and don't have any memories of missing rides. I guess I liked the fish.

Turning the two parks into one was the primary reason for their mutual destruction. Prior to the merger, most guests would spend one day at one park and then a 2nd day at the other. When it became one park, most people just visited the giant park for a single day - effectively slashing their attendance in half. The additional logistics of crossing the lake to get between the two halves was also a factor as there was not enough room to develop around the two edges.

Carmine Crincoli Until they empty the tanks of the huge trainable whales and dolphins, people will stop coming and they will bleed $. The model is outdated. A true conservation/ocean park like Disney Animal Kingdom/TokyoSea with thrill rides would be great.

This was the first SeaWorld park I visited and I loved it. I wasn't expecting rides or attractions, just exhibits featuring the "sea". Their seasonal tropical landscaping was years ahead of its time. Giant palms and bananas in Ohio. Very unique back then.

lackluster compared to today?? the original incarnation sounds perfect! I remember it! Whole family could enjoy a day out for under 50.00 in the 1980s Anyhow, the downfall was actually poor corporate ownership by anheuser busch who bough the park from founding owners HBJ in '89 deciding that in order to invest millions in rides in other properties they had scooped up they had to cut something elsewhere, and SWO's year over year profit just wasnt enough and this had them wanting to sell after less than 10 years of ownership. Attendance was fine, 35,000/day, profit was being handsomely made, cost of ownership was low but year over year profit growth was the issue adding rides might have been the only way to do that, but the park wasnt struggling. It's downfall was similar to it's neighbor Geauga Lake, just bad board room decisions. Forward facing, attendee facing concerns like perceived lack of rides as voiced by company PR reps, etc, sound nice as an excuse to why it closed or sold, but this was a budgetary cold board room killing by people with no stake in the local landscape to keep shareholders happy. As a result it deprived NE ohioans of thousands jobs and recreation, and ultimately doomed that entire area in just a few years, forever. I think you got it wrong here largely and people will reference this video thinking it's fact.

The park was successful for thirty years. It was combining both parks together that proved to be the downfall for the mega-park along with poor management by Six Flags. AB did I invest in the park as best they could adding the 4D Theater, Shark Encounter, Dolphin Cove, and Patagonia Passage. Yes, they also added Mission Bermuda Triangle, but that was during the final season as Sea World and could be rethemed with a new film in later years. It actually did get a new theme under Cedar Fair as Dino Island. Six Flags buying and merging the park is what ultimately doomed it. Both parks used to pull in just about a million visitors a year before the merger. Six Flags actually thought that they could pull in 2-3 million by merging the parks. Ironically, the merged park pulled in just over a million per year in attendance. People tried to do everything in one day as Oporto multiple days. Bleeding cash, Six Flags sold the park to Cedar Fair who immediately closed the Wildlife Side (former Sea World) hurting attendance immediately. They transformed much of Sea World into a water park, but it didn’t help. They shutdown Geauga Lake in 2007, and Wildwater Kingdom event closed in 2016. Corporate mismanagement and greed killed both successful parks. The biggest wrong that Anheuser Busch did was sell the park to Six Flags. They did invest in the park, just not with rides as they weren’t permitted to with their lease with Geauga Lake.

@@davehahner5344 The minute Cedar Fair bought it, it was doomed. Being just 2 hours apart, it was too close to Cedar Point for Cedar Fair to actually want it to survive. I had hoped that they would put the focus back on the sea park aspect and make it something completely different from Cedar Point. But then, that was also about the time that Sea World started getting into trouble with the killer whales and the whole societal shift about keeping animals in tanks. It's just sad all the way around. I loved Geauga Lake.

I’d love to see a ReviewTyme on the snorkeling attraction where you swam through shallow channels and deep pools that contained various sea life. One of those pools even had sharks, which admittedly were one of the small varieties. I think it was the San Diego Sea World back in the late 80’s. It was an amazing experience at the time and is likely something that couldn’t be done these days, at least in the US. I think they had some safety issues and were forced to close it down, but I got to do it before any issues and enjoyed it.

i grew up going to geauga lake and coincidentally moved to california the same year they moved their single ocra shouka to marine world in vallejo, and i started to go see her there too. i was so in love with her as a kid, but i can't believe that they kept her in isolation for so long, had her moved all around the globe and everything. i think she lives in san diego now and is kept with other whales, but its still very sad. huge marine animals never belonged in ohio. it did seem cool that geauga lake made it easier to seem them all the way in the middle of the midwest, but i think its for the best that this park doesn't exist anymore. the amusement park on the other hand, i miss a lot :'(

2:24 - Been coming to San Diego Sea world since the mid-70's. Love it. I remember that hydrofoil boat ride a lot. I also remember a map that showed FL and OH locations as well, but I never could figure out why one in Ohio. ( Almost makes sense when you consider the three US Naval training facilities were in San Diego, coastal FL and Ohio as well. ) Now that I've seen this video, I still don't get what they were thinking making a Sea World in Ohio.

I've always wondered if Six Flags were smart enough to see the doom on the horizon and sell Geauga Lake when it came to Cedar Point. And, as you said, if they did convert Geauga Lake into a Busch Gardens, how successful would that be for them to purchase other parks and do the same? That was back when the titular brewer owned the brand and nothing has been the same since they were spun off by InBev in 2009 (*cough* *cough* Blackfish *cough* *cough*). The company is doing that now with the Sesame Street brand by re-branding Aquatica San Diego (which they purchased from Cedar Fair). There were also plans to create one as a third gate to Busch Gardens Williamsburg too that surfaced in 2016 and seems to have gone nowhere. It would be more possible if InBev shut down the Williamsburg Plant (as Iron Gwazi sits on the former site of the Tampa Bay facility) so they could have more parking and a bit more expansion space for the park.
@LindsayTVFilm
@LindsayTVFilm 3 жыл бұрын
SeaWorld also has to pay Inbev to use the Busch name for the two parks and I feel that would be a better way to cut some costs before removing animals (Maybe its not that bad or they have no idea how to rebrand them-they could use their old titles, The Old Country and The Dark Continent for inspiration even though I don't know how many people will get it [which is probably another reason why they are still paying InBev to use the name])

Sea world Ohio was never a really impressive place. The Bush Garden used anything they could. Lions, elephants, dolphin's, etc as attractions. But people only want to see the same thing a couple of time's then get bored. Animals behavior is limited as a attraction. That's why Disney Created Animeltronic's. Always able to preform, could be reprogramable, and repeatability is garentie show. Animals might have a cold, a tempertantrum is not impossible. Very dangerous, and unpredictable.

Hey Michael, are you able to point me in the direction of these videos? One of the reasons I focused purely on Sea World Ohio not the entire Geauga Lake property is because most videos on the topic focus a lot more on Geauga Lake/ Worlds of Fun and gloss over Sea World Ohio. Whilst I will focus on the larger property in a later video this video was designed to purely be about Sea World and their demise came about in 2000 due to the property being bought out by Six Flags, a lot of the more juicier stuff happens when Six Flags sells the property to Cedar Point, which will be tackled in a future video. - Luke
