This movie got overshadowed by Saving Private Ryan because they were both released in the same year, but this movie is incredible. I wish it got more recognition. A movie about war that's philosophical, artistic, and poetic is probably a bit much for the masses to appreciate. It hits the soul much differently! Great tribute!

Браво, великолепный edit to a true masterpiece work of art. Один из лучших лаконичных эдтитов, что я видел, а я видел достаточно много.

This hauntingly beautiful irony in those movie is played out by pvt Witt, his thoughts seem pretty reflective of him being a border line conscentitous objector but his actions show no hesitation about sacrificing his personal self for his brothers in arms. In my opinion there's no other war movie that captures this dilemma so artistically.

I come back to this video after a while. I reflect how long ago I watched this movie for the first time. So many years, and every time I watch it, there is something new I noticed, something new I reflect upon. This is a representation of an existential component of my life.

Many times, I wished I could have been Witt living his life on the island. Peacefully and blissfully. Enjoying nature and a simple life. And not seeing his fellow man tear each other apart.

It's those vocals of this song, similar to the natives chanting on the island that haunt me. It evoks some kind of primal and sad longing feeling for life.

It's not just native chanting in the movie, it Melanesian Church Hymns. Terrence Malick is a devout Christian. So is Moby.

It's a cynical statement. There are men out there that can do great things on their own. But in war, men are pawns for the most part.

It truly caught the essence of being a solider. The finest film made on war and mans nature and how one is transformed when he must look at he's soul and he's place in the universe. Thank you for such a fine tribute.

It's not anti or pro war. It's the reality of nature in men's hearts and outside of them in the greater world.

Preston Ross of course it is an anti war movie at heart, otherwise Malick would have chosen a different scenario. Nonetheless it deals with many existential & deep questions which are portrayed masterfully. Way ahead of its time

This is not a anti-war movie! It's a true look into what goes through the mind of soldiers during war. All the pitfalls, different personalities, the brutal nature of war and at the same time the brotherhood that is so tribal formed. You have Witt the true optimist trying to come to grips with how the nature of man and the physical world can present such a dichotomy of brutal savagery to the beautiful redeeming nature of love with the men in his company and how the smallest most peaceful things in nature just keep happening no matter if we are alive or dead. Then you have 1sgt Welsch, who is the ultimate pessimist and brutally honest opinion that the world is not redeemable and neither is himself. A greater meaning or spirit behind the death and life is unseen to him. The dialogue between Witt and him pulling each other a little bit towadrs their philosophy on things. The constant point for point, going back and forth, causing just a little doubt in their beliefs. You have the end with Welsch showing he still had that little spark enough to feel grief for Witt, showing he wasn't completely numb to the loss. Then you see all the guys getting on the landing ship, so close together, but so lonely. Then the small palm seed laying in infancy on the beach, not knowing if the raw nature will allow it to grow or be swallowed up by the ocean never to exist. A complete microcosm of the film. I served multiple tours in combat and the things and feelings these men have are so real. The truest representation of how you feel and change. You die inside and something else grows out of that, with a big black hole in the middle of it. Down to how Bells wife just leaves him and he doesn't even know, going through intense combat and fighting for his life, to only make it through and find out what he was fighting to get back to at home was dead all along. The reaction of him laughing and not knowing what to do sitting on a Island in the pacific fighting men who want to destroy him and his soul. I have seen that look and reaction so many times on the faces of guys I served with and unfortunately for myself! Your whole world is destroyed, but at the same time you still have to do your job and be a professional soldier. You learn to take that grief and turn into into absolute anger and aggression. You no longer fear death and it makes you fully become the warrior you need to be to survive! To survive for what is another long story when you come home and people judge you!
