If you're here looking for a theatrical edit of Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for John Carpenter's 1982 film 'The Thing' then I don't have to explain the complicated history of a very frustrating soundtrack album.
This version has been assembled to reflect the soundtrack as heard on the film. A complicated process and I'll avoid the thesis-like explanation for the moment but certainly there were two primary hurdles in creating this - the original recordings have quite a bit of ambient noise so chopping up various cues is one thing but that ambient noise has to be maintained during any breaks (the Norwegian Base is a good example where strings ease in and out of the soundtrack).
Secondly was creating the bass-drone that weaves in and out of the screen version of Humanity Part 2 (but only comes in during the last measure of the motif on the album version) as well as underpinning sequences such as the Dog-Thing in the kennels and the Blair-Thing during the final confrontation. I wanted this sound to be authentic and consistent so I took the only 'clean' section of that sound available on the original recording (about a second and a half) and looped it. It was then best guess-work and going by ear to create the different intensities that it modulates through.
Overall I wanted this to be as close as possible to the film version and avoid some of the clunkier moments found in so called "screen accurate" bootleg albums of the score. My only concession to 'aesthetics' was not including the 'heartbeat' (Humanity Part 2) that plays during the Helicopter take-off for the Norwegian base.

The book was good, but I think it missed a few key elements that made the thing so wonderful. We never see the things real form in the movie, but in the book it's the first thing that's described. In the book it felt like the thing wasn't very menacing or a big threat, like everyone was casual about it. In the movie it was a paralyzing fear. I feel like you saw and understood the thing way too much in the book, but keeping it mysterious and unknown I'm the movie was amazing.

I collect soundtracks since 1978 and from time to time a composer can surprise one deeply with a master piece which falls so very much out of the usual music you're used from them. Even today, decades later, it is hard to believe that this bone chilling soundtrack came from the maistro. It ever reminded me a bit more from John Carpenter's work from his best years. It never gets old and still gives me today goose bumps. So grateful for this wonderful work. :)

You are the hero we didn't know we needed. lol As far as I'm concerned this is the definitive companion soundtrack. Hard to believe it's been up for nearly two years and I'm just now finding it (2 months now). Your work on the deep drone for Autopsy and The Dogs is, for me, the icing on the cake. Bravo!
@jezzalexander
@jezzalexander 11 ай бұрын
Thank You very much! Your comments here made my day! - Autopsy and The Dogs were so much work getting that deep drone bass note as close as possible and I was really pleased how Autopsy turned out. I've heard 'movie accurate' bootlegs that just use the opening titles to represent that sequence but upon listening carefully to the movie sequence itself there's other bits and pieces playing in there - it's so quiet in the film too but I think I got it. That drone sound was taken from 'Humanity Part 2'. On that original album track the main heartbeat theme plays, then ends before cutting into that garish, almost fairground ride style organ piece but in-between the two pieces of music is about two or three seconds of the 'drone' sound on its own and I took those few precious seconds and edited a couple of minutes worth of the sound. I then tweaked different versions of it to get the changes in frequency that you hear on the film's soundtrack. These were then overdubbed on to the main theme on my version and the 16th track here 'The Thing' and used to create the aforementioned Autopsy and The Dogs. Thanks again - it's fans of the film picking up on tracks like that that made this project worth the time and effort.

Superb job! I'm so glad to hear the score (as close as you can get anyway, your subtle additions to make it more accurate are so well done) as it sounds in the film, it's an atmospheric masterpiece with both Ennio Morricone's awesome orchestral work and Carpenter's beautifully creepy synth.

Thank you very much - quite a few fans of the film and its music expressing similar sentiments here and it's really nice that fans are getting where this edit is coming from. And thank you for picking up on the additions as they are the trickiest to put together and pull off. I've bought pro-level bootlegs just cobble odds and ends together to fill some of those music cues so even one person picking up on those additions makes it worthwhile.

I tried to convince some friends for the second one, but they were not in that kind of movie. Since then I was absolutely unsatisfied with all soundtrack releases. This soundtrack is great but a little frustrating when the first release soundtrack has parts of music heard in the movie connected to tracks not featured in the movie. However to get the movie version is a challenge. The tracks are there and with the re-release has extra tracks of Main title, Burn It, Fuchs, To Mac's Shack make the ambient tracks. The main title can be combined to make the Dog Monster scene. But you need to seperate tracks to get required movie version. I did combine track of the fying saucer opening with part of the opening Antarctica scene to create the helicopter take of for the Norwegian base. But faded out to early on the heartbeat track. This track is only seconds lasting of course. For the Blair monster combined Ennio Morriconne string plucking notes with part of ambient track. Tracks repeat with certain scenes . My soundtrack version is not perfect but very close to the movie. When pieces of Ennio Morricone music and John Carpenter ambient tracks were repeated it made it easy for the extra scene music needed. But again you have to cut tracks and fade in and out.Hope this makes sense. Not easy to explain. But im glad to see this is a popular soundtrack amongst all loyal to this wonderfully made Sci-fi horror. Well done work on this soundtrack.👍👍✨🌟💫👽

Very much appreciate you picking up on those drone loops - they were the trickiest pain in the neck of this project but essential to getting it to a presentable level. Keep at it if you're doing this Thing too - as they say, it's the fans that often do the best work and it would be cool to listen to someone else's take on this soundtrack.

@@jezzalexander If I ever manage to get it to where I'm comfortable sharing, I'd be happy to. :) You mind if I ask after your sampler/DAW? I've had some luck fudging the dynamic changes, but have had difficulties with creating a smooth continuous loop.
@jezzalexander
@jezzalexander 10 ай бұрын
@@psychokitty444 My drone was created purely in editing, no sampling at all (I wouldn't have a clue about that stuff) - in a nutshell, I took the two seconds or so of isolated drone sound I could find on the original soundtrack and created a 'chain' of them on Garageband - then a little bit of overlap and volume fade in/out on each little clip to get a consistent sound overall. That created a minute or so of 'drone' that I could double up again. Some inhouse effects patches and basic twiddles on Garageband to change the intensity but overall, a very very 'homemade' DIY Sellotape approach.
@psychokitty444
@psychokitty444 10 ай бұрын
@@jezzalexander @jezzalexander This is basically what was doing in FCPX, but executed much more smoothly. Probably helps that the drone you're using is much more constant and less 'dirty' than the Carpenter/Howarth rerecordings (which is what I've mostly been pulling from). There's a video tutorial up on YT of someone using BitWig's sampler to make smooth pads using just a sample of a single note-- bit beyond my monetary means right now, but I'm going to try and see if I can get a similar effect using Kontakt or FL Studio's Direct Wave. The way that same drone also weaves in and out of the film edits of "Humanity Pt. 2" is a big part of what makes it so chilling there, and it's not really well-represented on the album. Big thanks for the breakthrough on recreating it!

John Carpenter really knows how to put the element in horror I mean I know the 1951 black and white movie of The Thing is spooky but the 1982 reboot on the other hand is something else entirely, spooky is not the type of work I would use to describe this, the words I would use are Hart Pounding, Eery and Freaky, but I think the most horrifying part of the reboot… is the soundtrack, It’s not that I don’t like the movie because I do, I have watched it so many many times before and I didn’t freak out one bit, but I bet a lot of people in the world who are very sensitive and shy would have freaked out way more by the reboot than the original movie. Oh and one more thing, I WAS INFECTED😈💀
