ORIGINAL INFO: The Thing is a shapeshifting monstrosity trying to make you think it’s something it’s not… much like this comic.
RUMINATIONS: The crappy part of doing storyline finales in October is that I’m often scrambling to work on Longbox at the same time. Getting out a show EVERY SINGLE WEEK is difficult enough, but putting out a quality product every week AND at least halfway-decent videos every single DAY is nightmarish. The good news, however, is that I just needed an extra week to get everything together, so fortunately I was able to take the first week of the King of Worms finale to just do setup. I WAS still exhausted during this, though, so I left in a clunker of a line - an “as you know” line that I normally wouldn’t.
The Longbox set appearing more Christmassy was a result of the Patreon. My earliest Patreon milestone was for me to do a Holiday DVD. It was something I had hoped to do already, but would probably have skipped if not for the Patreon milestone being reached. Two videos on the DVD involve Moarte reviewing Christmas comics… and of course being very confused by the entire thing.

I've said it somewhere else: the Thing is tbe closest we'll get to popular culture (re: movies, TV, video games, stuff that's NOT considered "nerdy") to Lovecraftian horror outside of direct Lovecraft adaptations. It is inherently an unknowable, ancient creature with designs and motivations beyond our compression (or at least we literally can't communicate with it to discover what it wants without basically killing ourselves or becoming part of it), and this...THING takes that and turns it into...I hesitate to even call it body horror because it barely changes the few people it infects beyond "they sometimes sprout tentacles" and no one infected seems horrified by it and only Mac really seems "scared" of (re: determined to destroy) it.

It's kind of sad how poorly this series was handled, especially considering how well (for the most part) Dark Horse handled the Alien and Predator franchises. Also neither of those comics drug Ripley or Dutch into the stories over and over again.

Given that some time had passed since the last Thing comic, MacReady would have had time to tell government officials about the Thing, and impress on them in no uncertain terms how royally screwed humanity is if they let it near a populated area. Which means that the military would take far more drastic measures than just sending in some troops. What I'm saying is that this comic should have ended with New Zealand and the surrounding area getting nuked into glass.

Frank Miller already writes romance. Well, sort of. A lot of his stories have characters motivated by tragic romances... while having meaningless flings with nearly every female character they come across. Eeyeah. If he ever tried to write a straight-up romance, it wouldn't go well.

So let me get this straight... The Thing... one of the most TERRIFYING and GRUESOME franchises with one of the most repulsive, inhuman, mysterious creatures ever conceived in horror... has turned into *_TWILIGHT WITH ALIENS?!?!_* Because that's what it looks like to me! The Thing is now some kind of tragic romance story between two alien-people who are just trying to sustain themselves so they can keep making with the sexy. No longer is the thing some kind of horrifying entity with unknown levels of intelligence and a drive to spread and escape with the potential to wipe out the human race if it just makes it out of the arctic. Nope. Now it's just a couple of misunderstood lovers killing a small handful of folks in New Zealand. That's like if an infectious zombie just tried living a normal life with normal problems-- _Oh right, iZombie _*_is_*_ a thing._ This is why I want to become a horror writer, so that maybe one day I can kick in the door and snatch poor and abused properties like The Thing away from incompetent idiots.

I think the worst part of this is that I could kind of see how a "The Shadow over Innsmouth" with The Thing with Rowan as the foreign detective could work... but first of all you'd need to make sure it *isnt* The Thing, because it already has too many rules and baggage to go with it. Also the whole 'different bodies of The Thing are actually separate entities' could be an interesting concept. But it's obviously wasted here.

Honestly, I felt like the thing learned love through Powell, and Jenny's Thing was an offshoot, and now had it absorbed, making it be a half-thing, half-human monster

Maybe this Thing is an off-shoot mutation of The Thing. Like, in all the times it assimilated something, just 1 cell ended up defective, deviant in it's design, where it cannot generate stable cells on it's own and must absorb things rather than assimilate them, rejected from the rest of The Thing, because it's existence was dangerous to The Thing. Maybe it's a Thing that clings to it's host's identity, because it's a much simpler being and it is the one that get's convinced it is what it absorbs, because it has a limited sense of independent cognition, ending up more an influence on the minds of those it infects rather than a dominant being that takes the minds of others to it's collective. Hey, it's flimsy, stupid and doesn't excuse the poor writing on display, but there's a certain fun in trying to reason out crappy stories and find a hook that sticks, sorta workshopping all the merrit out a story that obviously didn't meet it. **Sigh** Man, they really should've had Agapido here. Imagine how cool that would've been.

Hmm. Actually the whole "don't assimilate everyone because competition " in the comic vs "infect everything available " the film sort of makes sense- trapped in Antarctica with limited prey, in a hostile environment, infecting everyone would make sense as the best chance of survival. Whereas in an environment with plentiful prey, that need to spread to survive is much less necessary. That doesn't make the rest of it less silly though.

It’s amazing how quickly this series devolved. The first set of comics was pretty good, Climate of Fear had good moments but too many flaws so it was just 50/50, and this comic is utter garbage with the best thing about it being the covers.

Not that I have any personal experience, but I get the distinct feeling that getting hooked with a fish hook hurts a heckuvalot more than getting a shot. For one thing, the hook has a barb that makes it hard to remove, and for another, aren't fish hooks typically thicker than injection needles?

I honestly have one question regarding The Thing, can it go back into its victims form after it reveals itself, or when it does that does it have to assimilate another host to hide? We never really did see it go back to its form, but then again it won't really have a reason for it only does it as last resort. But it boggles my mind

This comic reminds me of Paranormal Activity The Ghost Dimension, it screws up the mythology of the thing, and is an awful, underwhelming finale, except The Ghost Dimension had better knowledge of its own series than this.

Thanks to you, Linkara, I have been more into comics recently. The very first series I really got into was John Constantine's Hellblazer - Heck, thats why my internet alias is Ran Constantine, I loved it so much x3 These days, I'm also fond of Hellboy and a certain IDW series about magical talking ponies. I even inherited Howard the Duck comics from my grandfather awhile back (even had issue 1 in there) which I actually quite enjoyed. Have ya seen the awesome nbc series of Constantine? It was so good to see Constantine done right outside the comics.

Before i start. I must confess that I've always been more of a alien guy. Nothing against The Thing. Just prefer being able to see who is the enemy. Now I've always agreed with ripley. The second the general public is exposed to the xenomorph.....game over. Now as impossible as it would be to stop a xeno infestation. You would have a much better chance than you would stopping the thing. At least the xeno require a host that is large enough to support a chestburster. The second the thing infected a fish in the ocean. The outcome is determined. So it may be this story seems off because we are getting the viewpoint of the thing as it passes its memories as it assimilates one of the last humans. (I know. But i always try to justify oddities like this. lol this one requires alot of suspension of disbelief)

This comic might as well pull a Monster Blood 4 by revealing that it wasn’t The Thing, but that’d make too much sense. I know it would be a strange thing (no pun intended), to do, but at least it wouldn’t screw up a pre-established, well known monster.

Wow... just wow. SO, funny story for whoever's reading this. There was a time when I never watched Jhon Carpenter's "The Thing". I only heard about it though these reviews and watched them mostly for the fun of it. It wasn't until after I saw Stanley Kubrick's "The Shinning" that I became interested in more modern horror and was inspired by the AT4W reviews to go back and watch The Carpenter flick. (Again, thank you Lewis) Now that I have the full picture, I have a whole new understanding of just how sucky this mini-series truly was.

While it's still fanservice and rather odd and out of place, I'd just like to put it out there: I have taken out garbage in my underwear... I don't know how common it is, but it is a thing people do. ( And I'm way more certain than I should be that women do it too, despite never having seen that exact circumstance. ) Yes, even when it's cold, yes even when it's raining. The idea is to get out and back in so quick that putting on clothes wasn't necessary. And generally after the garbage is out, one strips the rest of the way and goes and sprawls out on a couch for a bit or takes a bath and goes to bed. That was clearly not the comic book's intent, but hey, accidental realism. Probably the only bit of it in this thing.

So ... let me see if I understood this, a woman in strange circumstances is possessed by a hungry creature that will basically kill each person who approached him to her, (notably the people who come closest to her are mens) and she gives in to the wishes of the creature in order to feel good with herself follow by poinless fan service... oh sweet merciful lord this is the plot of the film of megan fox jennifers body...ugh! Is time to get some drinks! Seriously this conic really hurts!
