Nail School is just enough to pass state boards! I feel like having a career in this field is very much self guidance and constant continuing education!! My instructor straight up tells everyone I will teach you all I can but experience will teach you what will get you through day to day!!

OMG, this was my experience in school (I'm licensed) ! I was on the floor doing nails and I had no idea what I was doing. I remember I had a Prom client who requested a full set of pink and white French, it was a mess and I was completely stressed. My instructor was kind enough to show me how to use nail forms, basic acrylic and tip application. However, I've learned and continue to learn the fundamentals of nail enhancements via social media, paid and free online classes. Young Nails is a huge part of my continue education via social media. I really want to take a class with YN this year..

Debi Erickson I was an educator for you for many years. I currently teach the nail program for Westland Beauty Academy in Lakewood Co. We use YNI products only. I have to say that I pride myself on the fact that when our students graduate from our school they are well educated on every aspect of the nail industry. They are well educated on not only sanitization and disinfection but also acrylic’s, gel’s, reverse application and art. In the state of CO you have to be Electric file certified in order to legally use an electric file. After our students obtain their licenses they come right back to the school and take our 8 hour course and receive their certification. Our students are highly sought after for employment because salon owners know how well educated they are.

I started doing nails on myself in a family shelter and the girls there started seeing my improvement and would let me work on them & they’d tip. My husband and the girls eventually convinced me to go to school for it. The social worker at our shelter pulled some strings with the shelter funding and sent me to school. At the time my husbands hours were down to part time and I was jobless our daughter was 3months old so money was tight. That shelter & nail school was a blessing. I did everything I had to do in that school to excel. We were only a class of 4 and all the books were Spanish so my teacher would let me use her book when she could. If not I had to wait for the English course and that was NOT an option. So Google translate was my bestie when I couldn’t understand some of the Spanish. When it came to acrylics and designs I was helping the teacher with the rest of the students. I could have quit. I could have said forget it I’m helping and I’m a newbie but I didn’t. In helping I also learned. So don’t be afraid to help, you can’t be shy in this industry. Fast forward ⏩ I finished school and that same week I went for my license passed it and found a job. My social worker paid for my licensing out of her pocket because she knew I couldn’t that week and I’ll never forget it. At my new job my nails weren’t as good as my coworkers since they’d been in the game at the time for almost a decade. But I did what I had to do, 8 years later and we’re opening our first nail suite next month. It took some time but God knows best. My husband and I went through hell and high water in life. Don’t let your current position determine your future. If you love it go for it. Get that license and hustle your way to the 🔝!!! Anything is possible you just have to pray & push. Thank God my nail instructor taught us how to use odorless and regular nail monomer all brands. We were encouraged to try all brands and see what we liked and she also taught us how to use the e-file.

Eight weeks in the classroom learning from the Milady Standard textbook, while watching the educator peruse recipes on Pinterest and stalk her husband who may have been cheating on her. Then onto the floor. When we asked her to show us how to do acrylic nails, we were told that it wasn’t her strength and we would need to learn it elsewhere. That’s when I found YN tutorials! Thank you!!! I learned sanitation, disinfection, anatomy, how to identify infection and disease and infection control. I learned how to roll towels and fold a fitted sheet!!! Hey, that’s a valuable skill, really!!! I lost weight from stress, not knowing if I was going to graduate on time and I started learning how to behave like a younger person again. There were good moments and bad. Some really great moments and several that I would just rather never think about again. But, in the end, I paid for and EARNED my license!!! I am a practicing nail tech and happy to be part of this ever changing, ever-growing field. My recommendation to anyone considering going to nail school? Know what you are going to get out of it. You are going to get exactly what you put into it. Nothing more. Nothing less. Well, probably a little bit less. But you will be on your way to a lifetime of doing nails legally. That’s a bonus. There is no magic wand. It’s hard work, but very rewarding if you make it that way.

I’m on my third week of nail school and we are learning so much. We’ve done all the sanitation, learned mani, pedis, hard gel and starting acrylics tomorrow. We’ll be learning e-file, dry manis, poly gel, dip, business, budgeting, and taxes soon. My school has their act together! We’ve actually watched a few of your videos in our lessons.

I watch videos to gain knowledge and then I spend a minimum of 8-10 hrs a day working on my nails and work thru whatever new thing i want to do. I am passionate about becoming a nail artist. I am not a student in a beauty school but I'm going to go into a school and have the skills they aren't going to teach me.

It feels a little misleading. Nail school should be all about nails. That should cover all forms of nails. It should be updating all the time. Nail products change all the time. Disinfecting is very important but you need to know how to do nails too.

You guys made me feel a bit better I was in school for just about 3months I live in Florida so we’re not required to take state board and I can definitely say that I feel like I didn’t learn not even the basics in my time in school I had a teacher for about 1month afterwards the school struggled to find us a teacher most of what I know now is from social media & KZfaq it’s been extremely hard to stay motivated but I’ve already invested so much and I really enjoy doing nails it’s just been a hard journey I’m tryna see the light at the end of the tunnel it’s very dim but I know it’s there..

What sucks for me is I’m self taught from years of teaching myself and tons of research and your videos, but I still have to go through school and pay for it just to be licensed. 😩

Excellent video once again guys! I live in the uk and went to nail school almost 3 years ago and I feel incredibly lucky as I learnt all the ins and out of skin anatomy and physiology, sanitation disinfection, I completed my level 2 and level 3.. each level was a year each so I went to nail school for 2 years in total. In level 2 I learnt the basic manicure and pedicure and then a more luxurious manicure and pedicure that included heated mits and paraffin wax, I also learnt the basic natural tip and acrylic overlay to create that ‘natural nail’ look using professional products as well as learning how to do infills, how to soak acrylic off. Then level 3 was more in depth of acrylic application, how to do a traditional french, sculpting, e-file training, encapsulation of glitters, dried flowers ect, french ombré.. also known as ‘baby boomer’, also used coloured acrylic and how to infil the traditional french using an e-file, hard gel.. sculpted and tipped and infilled, traditional french with hard gel, how to soak off acrylic. Also learned how to do nail wraps and also fiber glass nails. And for each subject there was a practical assessment that went along with it where the teacher had to supervise and watch you complete a service to a high standard and we had written/multiple choice paper exams as well that we had to pass in order to pass both level 2/3 courses! We also practiced on ourselves and each other!

My nail teacher was a cosmetologist and had never done nails before!! 😭 so hard to learn in school

E- file isn’t even heard of while in school. They don’t even show you how to cut the cuticle, shape different shapes, apply gel, gel soak-off, acrylic soak- off, basic nail art, applying tips si basically everything. I learned everything from my nail salon everything and I am still learning mostly from social media. I feel like electric filing is so important but no one teaches it and it’s sad because we pay like 10-20k just to get a license. So I appreciate YN and other nails videos so much.

I liked this before even watching because this topic needs to be talked about. I learned three things from my instructor. How to apply acrylic to a nail, an ombré nail and a French nail. The rest from my book and KZfaq…A lot from Young Nails. Thank you for sharing so much content so we can learn. We did not learn any hands on with the efile. I went during the beginning of Covid so i didn’t work on any actual people. So the fear of going to an interview without knowing anything really is so scary. They want you to do a set at interviews in salons with no real training for the workforce. I’ve definitely made nail playlists on my KZfaq that I refer to.

I’m currently in cosmetology and this is so accurate. I was so excited for the acrylic portion and they hardly touched base on it. It’s a business also so they mainly focus on haircuts. The teachers attitudes are awful, they take the fun out of learning so I find myself losing motivation. but then I come on here and get excited about learning to do nails again! I wish you guys were around back when I was starting out! My nail school in Montana taught me sanitation and gave about a 10 minute demo on doing acrylic nails. Then they said go practice. My first and only job doing nails was at a Day Spa, where I was the only nail tech. I had nobody to ask for help and KZfaq wasn't a thing back then. I struggled for two years doing nails and gave up.

I’m so glad my school offered an advanced class. My teacher was amazing during school but she couldn’t dive into certain topics because of the schools guidelines. But in the advanced class she taught us about efiling, acrylic designs, and gel extensions! Sooooo useful to have that hands on experience!

I went out of school to a spa. After 2 years of gel manis and million of pedis I left. Looked for over a year trying an Asian salon (I lasted 2 weeks). Then really kept looking til I found a nail salon that wasn’t Asian owned, offered 50/50 with no booth rental, and supplied all products. I went in for a pedicure and decided to speak to owner. Advised I couldn’t afford to be there more than 2 days because I had an office job. But I am getting the experience with different clientele, product lines, and I finally get to work with acrylics and hard gels. I am driving 25 miles in Orlando traffic but I am enjoying the journey! Hang in there!

Your absolutely correct when you say It set up for failure. In my class no one ended up pursuing the nail trade. We all got our license but there is no further education except what you can find on you tube.

My exact experience at nail school too. Very sad. We learned about a certain service in the morning & in the afternoon we done that service on a classmate. Next day went on to a different service & same exact experience. At 2 weeks we were in the floor & at 3 weeks providing services to customers. I never felt so unprepared. I’ve been a nail tech for just over a year and I still watch your videos because I don’t know enough. I can’t wait until you can do in person classes.

the first 3 months in nail school they just taught us set up, basic techniques for odorless, acrylic, dip, and gels but they didnt tell us if we were doing it right or not. it wasnt until the 3rd week of the 3rd month that they started doing demos on ombre, milk bath, gel application, efile use, and nail polish application where the instructor shows us and then she goes around to check our work. but they just show us 1 time each demo and thats it. Ive been gettin all my info from youtube honestly.

my teacher didn’t really care if we learned anything or if we went to state board she basically just threw the towel in I’m assuming because of the pandemic . I’m just glad I got the experience though, she didn’t teach me, her packets and your videos did :)

I actually taught my class on how to do acrylic nails. Which I had not ever done myself. I had watched my nail tech that I had a standing appointment with for 17 years. That is the only knowledge, it did help everyone.

Hi I’m sorry I know that this post is super old but I am going through exactly what you are talking about on this video. I am a licensed nail technician in Hawaii with my own studio that I just opened up seven months ago. I am that nail tech that open the studio with zero clientele but I am very determined and driven, and was able to build my clientele and the short amount of time. While I am working, I am also searching to further my own education so I do watch all of your videos and I’m so grateful! Here is my dilemma since the Nail school here does not teach anything past what you were talking about, things, like Polygel, softgel, full coverage, extensions, cuticle, work, etc. etc. I was hoping that I could become an educator of those things. Hoping that I could maybe hold workshops, one-on-one classes, and just helping the future nail techs in Hawaii. Of course, I cannot be donating my time for free, so I was hoping to charge and make some extra money from the holding these workshops. But in the state of Hawaii, you need to have a beauty instructors license to teach. I’m trying to figure out the difference between nail instructor and nail educator. Someone told me I would be considered a nail instructor since I would be holding demos. And that educators are brand base. I don’t necessarily want to be brand based because I believe there are a ton of great products out there, I just want to teach technique. How can I go about this without having to get a beauty instructors license that actually only allows me to teach at a beauty school or in a supply shop. Absolutely frustrated. It’s so hard to share information without getting the short end of the stick. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

In my cosmetology program we had 3 weeks out of 9 months to learn about nails and it covered the diseases/disorders and sanitation/disinfection and then KZfaq videos of acrylics

I went to school and did the VTCT course for nails on top of a full beauty qualification, but it was like doing 2 courses at the same time. We did get some application in hard gel and acrylic, but not as in depth as I had hoped. We covered backfills, some nail art etc. I do feel they gave more than just to 'pass' But you never would have been able to take a full paying client on just their knowledge alone. I have probably watched about a thousand hours worth of videos on everything from application to filing and it took a while to get a decent kit together and I am finally getting in the practise I need. I am nervous of taking paying clients, because even though my book knowledge is spot on, acrylic especially is challenging to me, but I love it so much.

There is SO much free education on KZfaq! I'm completely self-taught and doing my own nails (and doing them pretty well) completely from KZfaq videos. It's taken me a couple of years, and I'm still not even close to being as good as I'd like to be, but I'm getting there. It seems like every time I go out in public, someone stops me and asks where I get my nails done, saying there's no salon nearby doing nails like I wear. I always turn them down and explain why (it would be taking $ away from a trained & working nail tech, it's illegal, I could be sued, etc) but it tells me that I'm doing alright lol. But it's all from a totally free app. And yes, Habib, you can save videos on KZfaq and title them whatever you want. I've got oodles of videos saved on prep, shaping, gel techniques, designs I want to try, etc, and many of them are from this channel because y'all are awesome! Sending much appreciation from small-town Kentucky!

This interview is ON POINT! I've been licensed almost 20 years and learned from a Cosmo teacher. No E-File. No actual hands on instruction. But....Just this past month I started teaching as a Nail Tech Instructor!! This is the first time in the school's 60 year history that they've hired actual nail techs. The future is looking bright. :)

At our school in Las Vegas (Academy of Hair Design) we used Young Nails exclusively for acrylic and hard gel application. Our teacher did try to do demos for us to try and teach us a little more but the goal is to teach you to pass state board. We were lucky we had nail teachers (Ms. Daphne & Ms. Debi) that cared 😊

I'm not really worried. I'm finally signed up to go to school & get my licence. I have already been working on my nails for years now. I tightened up my skills with a lot from your videos & a few other favorites. I have a plan on how to get clients... Do up my nails & go out. Everywhere I go people have been asking for years now. So I'm just going to make cards. I have a extensive art background so I know how to do a long list of things. I can't wait for May... I'll be licensed by then & taking appointments!

I guess I got lucky! First of all, I had been watching KZfaq channels like Young Nails and Nail career education and I was doing my own nails and everybody else's who let me 😅. The teachers didn't know how to do nails but they had us watch KZfaq (Tammy Taylor, Young Nails...) and practice on each other all the time. And, of course, pass the state board 🤣

Ok...Experienced techs need to host look and learn sessions for new techs and watch every single Young Nails video. Greg and Tracey are amazing!!!!

Im going this year to get my mani instructors license, im so excited! My school too to finally have a teacher strictly dedicated to nails, when i went it was a cosmo teacher.

Soo I always loved nails and this summer i get a break since I just graduated with my AA and transferring to a University which is the reason I’m learning and binging on YN products and videos. But, what you’re talking about regarding teaching and requirements is universal. I’m going to school for nursing and one teacher did what was required and the other loved to teach us beyond the requirements and what it means to love your career and that’s who I learned more from and carry with me all the time. The one that taught me only requirements is the one I never want to be like.

So I went to a cosmology school that had a nail program. My instructor taught sanitation but I’ve taught myself by attending KZfaq university 😂. My instructors (Young Nails) have taught me sooooo much

I don't know if my teacher really liked teaching or this was what all teachers did in that school but i realized that i learned more watching videos and searching by myself and of course practicing. For example, we spent for gel and acrylic applications only 4 school days, meaning about 20 hours, the first one she showed the application and the other 3 school days she was near two or three girls who had salons and working already and they exchanging opinions and she showed them every detail they needed. I remembered one of this days because i couldn't put a nail form, i was calling the teacher for at least one hour to help me and she never answered because she was making acrylic flowers with those experienced girls. About 30 minutes before the end of the day, i had finally put the form and i was trying to apply acrylic based on what i remebered, she came over my head and said ''Why did you call me? I showed you how to do it''. I was almost crying until then and the sad thing is that i was not the only girl that needed help or guidance and had the same reaction from the teacher.

I went to Poway academy of hair design in 1995. There were separate instructors for each license, cosmetology, nail technician and esthetician. I remember them having salon experience in whatever they were teaching. As a cosmetologist I experienced every department and looking back I feel like they all did try and teach us as much as they could. The head instructor Mrs. Brown really wanted us to be successful and passed on so much knowledge about this industry. She also gave us real expectations for once we were licensed. We all left knowing that we needed to continue our education in salon with real life situations. Even more back then when we didn’t have answers at our fingertips.

I had the worst Cosmetology instructor. She didn't teach us neither theory nor practice. I learned literally watching Greg @gmansalo and Tracey and two other ladies on KZfaq. When I went to a school for Nail Tech (which I didn't really need the license because I was already a Cosmetologist, the school was very unprofessional and never taught me anything about nails. I also have my Nail Tech license which I have to renew soon. I just want to thank @youngnailsinc and the two other ladies channels on KZfaq for teaching me what I know today. I learned and studied on my own and Thanks to Father God that I passed my State Boards with flying colors.

I’m a nail tech in a nursing home and wouldn’t trade it for anything! Did the salon for a couple year but u enjoy where I’m now!

I think I’ve shared my experience a couple times on some of your other videos here. I’ve had my license for a little over five years and I’m in New Jersey. They only teach you to pass state board, all the teachers in the beauty school are licensed cosmetologist and the only way the teacher knew anything about nails is what was in the book provided for us. Just like Tracy said I did like one day of acrylic and one day of hard gel and everything else was mani’s & Pedi’s. We were taught a lot of sanitation and disinfection also. I know some states require nail techs to take continuing education classes for their license. In the state of New Jersey we are not required to take any continuing education classes and it’s up to the Nail Tech to do with him or her self.

Yes! Lol my testing was all about cleanliness and diseases. Period. We had one day each of acrylic and gels. Lol yes I agree nail school needs to change now...

Immediately out of school I took a class with Amy Becker and I learned more in that 4 hours about structure and e filing than I learned in 5 months of school

I wish I would’ve seen this before starting school so I would have at least had an idea of what I was going in to. I got my hopes up and was excited to learn and within a few weeks quickly realized I wouldn’t be learning much. I learned more from your channel before attending school than I learned in the 8 months I was there.

School did NOT prepare me to do nails. I’ve been in a salon since September of 2020 and I am struggling. Finding someone that is willing to teach me has been so hard. Since I can’t get any help I’m seriously considering ditching acrylics all together. This week has been hardest for me. I’ve seriously considered quitting all together.

I'm an educator and they are right! I try my best to teach more out of curriculum like color blocking, encapsulating, different gels, polygel, and Gel-X. But it depends on what we have time for. Where I'm from its just 300 hours, 9 weeks for full time!!

Love your content and products. I'm in school for cosmetology and fell in love with nails. I have learned more from you guys than my own teachers and to be straight I do nails better than my instructor (granted she's old fashined) . I noticed you guys like to file off camera a lot and was hoping you could include the filing from time to time to help me understand the start to finish process. I JUST graduated from Douglas Education Center in monessen pennsylvania its about 20min outside of Pittsburgh. My teacher was fucking AWESOME!!! the first day of school she told us "i will NEVER tell you to take your book out and turn to pg .... " all of our "book-work" was done at home. Each week whatever we learned in class correlated with our books. Every tuesday our workbooks would be due on said chpt and we would also have a test. Every minute of class was hands on experience. We learened nail wraps -dip - gel- acrylic -hybrid gel- efile Gel polish- layovers -fills- color blocking- tips- we were encouraged to sculpt only- How to work on bitten nails and soooo much more! The first week was dedicated to disinfection and sanitation. After that we practiced it daily so we knew it well. Anything that we would learn from our book we taught ourselves at home. Everything hands on our teacher taught at school. The ONLY complaint i have is we learned our state laws the second to last day of school and didnt have a test on it or anything. It obviously wasnt in our books because its different state to state but i think thats one thing that we should have leared eaelier and we could have discussed throughout the semester when different salon situations would come up we could refer to state laws n that would have helped us remember them as well!

When I went to school.. my teacher for nails was a barber. So we were left on our own to learn nails. Thank God my cousin taught me when I was in my teen years

I would love a video about teenage clients. How young is too young? Does a parent/guardian have to be present for underage clients? Are there state regulations for this, or does it depend on your insurance?

my teacher taught us mani/pedis, sanitation and disinfection, majority the nail disorders and diseases, a lot of history about nails and just cosmetology in general, and I think the last thing we learned was using the efile but we learned it all from packets and she would tell us to go home and literally watch your tutorial videos and come back and be expected to know exactly what to do and pressured to get it perfect the first time and IN TIME. my grade was always in the 60s or 70s because I couldn’t get all of my tasks done in one day mainly because she stressed me out so much that I would start to panic. I’m not gonna give up on nails though.

I actually went through a nail tech course but infills was just mentioned to do every 2-3weeks... they didn’t show us how to do it it was just a small picture with the nail growth and explanation on why is important to do infills. Actually useful, but I learned how to do infills by myself really lol they didn’t show us how to and we didn’t had any practice on that.

The school I went to let you teach nails as long as you were licensed for at least a year. The teachers I had were pretty good but they leaned a lot on your videos. If she couldn’t teach a certain thing she would recommend one of your videos to explain and show it properly ❤️

Maybe its different in canada, but here it's usually a 9 month to a year course with teaching about nail anatomy, structure, nail art. Uts all still pretty basic, but they do teach you nails.

No back when I was in school the teachers told us you have to get hired by a salon willing to train you. Thankfully I found one that did! But what happens to people who want to work from home or pt? It's so hard...

What would be a good starting point for someone(me) who has never done acrylic. I've used dip and builder in a bottle and that's a out it. But when y'all had the BOGO sale for the two trial kits I jumped!! I just don't know where or how to start other than just winging it 😂

The school I had started to go to in Michigan was more interested in money that having the evening teacher actually teach, they even tried to send me to collections for over $2,000 saying i owed it when I had federal student aid and the pell grant. I knew more than half the people there just from learning from my mom and from all the different KZfaqrs and research I've done. Now I can't even find a school in Knoxville, TN that does just nails courses. It's all cosmetology which I don't care for. My sister is finishing hers up this year and my mom has been a nail tech for over 30 years. I don't want to and can't really drive 1-3 hours away to take a 600 hour course. :(

My teacher didn’t teach much ... Pandemic .. Marriage Problems .. Family Problems brought to school .. @ 45 years old I wish I could learned more .. !! But came home to look up on KZfaq and found you guys !!🙏🏼 took my written exam after 1 year of finishing my hours and now trying to go back and take my practical .. but we only went through it once and was a hurry up we got finish this to get going on the book 💀 So please try and make a practical test video for Texas Exam on manicure !!!

I relate, used so much money to go to school, went to the best school, most expensive in the country and i suck at nails.. So depressing

I was taught EVERYTHING nails - gel, acrylic, tips and forms, hygiene, (all aspects) nail art, nail diseases, e-file, pricing, taxation and business accounting as well as business etiquette AND how to engage on social media! My teachers name is Sarah Curtin and my academy is Meraki Professional (Cork) I had the most wonderful experience there and still have the support of her professional expertise even now. If I have a problem, I can contact her and she will do everything possible to help me plus we have a WhatsApp group where we (students) can help each other, which she setup and is also part of.

My nail teacher doesn't like doing anyone's nails but her own... she was licensed a handful of years ago and hasn't kept up on any of the latest trends or information. 😔

Hi schools here in my state are not accredited they don’t offer financial aid. It almost sounds like going to work at brick and mortar store and learning their MDS safety sheets for a slip and falls. I really don’t think it’s worth $3999 to just sit and learn about disinfecting. Plus the fact they have shortened hours down to 250 hours. Three days in class two days virtual. Can you please come and open up an Academy here on the East Coast please

I went for my nail license last year , for TWO days... Didn't learn anything about sanitation, or anything. We just did a form on someone's finger, then the next day was gel. That was it. I'm in the process of learning everything myself, but still being certified 🙄

Well our school teachers acrylics, beading, and fills. Have had some people come in to teach lessons but they don’t tend to teach how to build with Gel and do those other type of services 😂

We had to get through basics before we were put on the floor. 7 weeks long.

To be fair, most states have such tiny hour requirements that they just don't have time to teach anything. And I know that in my state, the board has a very disproportionate view of how difficult it is to learn to do a manicure and pedicure compared to enhancements.

Cameo College in Murray, Utah actually teaches you how to do nails. I did a lot of research before I chose which school to go to. I was impressed by what I saw there. They not only taught mani, pedi, acrylic & gel, they taught business management (not too in depth) and made sure we were ready for the state boards. I liked their program so much, my daughter will be starting there in the fall. :)

I want to get my license, but can't afford to go to school right now. Until I can, I practice at home with a practice hand.

Anyone can make their own personal playlists on KZfaq and save all the videos they want to them. It's very handy. Can't lie, I already have a separate "YN" playlist for all the Young Nails videos that I think I'll need to reference again or in the future... 💕
