Nice work Andy and all you Patreons...obvs a labour of love. An epic video for an epic genre. Prog isn't my main thing but I dabble and my no.1 would also be Yes. Nice to see Hawkwind in there, wasn't sure they'd qualify as they were so diverse but Pete's summation of their proggier moments was bang on and you can't argue with Mellotron on Hall of the Mountain Grill! Adding Free was presumably a wind-up? It Bites should have got their place. I'd have put Rush much higher, ditto Focus but hey thats just me... anyway thanks to all involved.

@AndyEdwardsDrummer
@AndyEdwardsDrummer Ай бұрын
Yes it did. Some of the edits I had to hope would work because my laptop would simply not preview them. It took 5 hours to export and 2 hours to upload. Jon Anderson, Carl Palmer, Steven Wilson and a few other legends were contacted for videos and then when they didn't come through I had to rethink. I'm chuffed I got Colin Edwin, I don't know him but he watches the channel so he did his video in 10 mins from me emailing him. Legend.

Great video Andy!! Very well produced - and a lot of fun! Do you have the actual list of the 30 bands in order somewhere on the page? I watched this video over a couple days, so I may have missed a couple things, but I was surprised that I didn’t see (unless I missed them) King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Spock Beard, Nektar, Marillion, Fish, Dream Theater, The Flower Kings, Renaissance, and Transatlantic. Of course, I know that the list were personal preferences from your Patreon fans, and there would be 100 reasons and 100 other bands that could be added… I was just surprised that a few of them weren’t mentioned. But all in all - it was a fabulous video and I’d love to see the list. Thanks for all your hard work and for educating me on a couple bands I’m not familiar with. I guess I better check out the Cardiacs!! Randy from Clearwater, FL

King Crimson and Jethro Tull are both on there, at number 2 and number 5 respectively. I agree with you that Nektar and Renaissance would be great choices for inclusion on the list. Glad you mentioned VDGG. Funny Story. My first purchase of them was 1970 The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other, just after hearing ELP Pictures at an Exhibition. Curiously , I never thought anything wrong with the record, as the first track began Darkness 11/11 with a repeating noise which I assumed was intentional. After hearing DSOTM and the starting heartbeat at the same repeat rate, I assumed Pink Floyd was copying VDFF using a different noise, and was appalled. IT wasn't until recently, listening to youtube and that song again, that I realized it was the pressing. Its a little late to get a replacement.

Before watching this rather bonkers epic I waded thru' a Rolling Stone top 500 albums vid. The list, apart from Floyd & Tull was almost entirely devoid of what we Know as prog acts, confirming the feeling that critics still have a rather sniffy attitude to the genre. Coupled with the fact that many of the fans seems to be getting on a bit ( I'm 70) it does make me wonder for the future appreciation of acts that can be loosely assembled under the progressive banner? Whilst I enjoyed this presentation a lot Andy, I do wonder if there are younger people who enjoy the music or whether is become a bit of a a musical cul de sac for the over 50's

You may have already noticed that I'm watching this video in stages. And so you don't think I only say bad things (even jokingly), here's a good one: I loved the way you talked about Jethro Tull. Bravo! On the other hand, regarding the Van Der Graaf Generator, you said that there are no virtuosos. I understand what you mean, but I believe that one should not disregard Peter Hammill's lyrics. He doesn't just write lyrics for songs. He's a true poet! One of the very few in 20th century music. Can a person be a virtuoso with words?

Progressive Rock is the most important category in the history of music, it broke all the barriers in music, the introduction of classical music blended with rock is unbeatable, this style of music was founded in the UK and probably came out of the Independent school's system, so who started it, Genesis must be mentioned for opening the door, also bands like Jethro Tull added Folk to the genre Did America make prog? well not really, although it was different, but Europe certainly came on board

I realize this is all quite subjective, but I have definite reservations about categorizing the music of some of these bands as "progressive rock". As I mentioned earlier, Free is definitely NOT a prog rock band. If Free is prog rock, then Bad Company is prog rock. I rest my case. Here are some other bands I'm not totally comfortable putting on the list: 1. Led Zeppelin. If Led Zeppelin plays progressive rock, then so do Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep. They all have some fleeting prog rock elements scattered in their music, but that's as far as it goes, I think. 2. Tangerine Dream. As much as I love them, they're essentially "electronica", and not really prog rock. Even calling their music "rock" is stretching reality a little bit. 3. Hawkwind. Another band I love, but mainly because I listened to them whilst doing acid in the late 70s. Spacy, swirling and far out ... but prog? Don't know about that. 4. Mahavishnu Orchestra. Incredible music to be sure, but I see them more as jazz fusion than prog rock. I suppose jazz fusion is a "type" of progressive rock, so in that sense I guess I buy it. But when I hear them, I don't think "prog rock". I think jazz first and rock second. But I admit the distinction is subtle and somewhat vague. 5. Frank Zappa. To me Zappa transcends all categories. His music encompasses prog rock, pure jazz, jazz fusion, classical, blues, doo-wop, rockabilly, marching band, etc, etc, etc. It's too BIG to be limited by the "progressive rock" category and label. That's about it, I guess. I'm fine with the rest of those bands being on the list, even though I'm not familiar with a couple of them. By the way, I'm not a big fan of Marillion, but I am surprised they weren't included.

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer Yes, I understand that, Andy. I was really speaking to your patrons here ... not actually a reflection on you. And you did make that categorization issue clear in the video. There's a lot of things that go into a great Progressive band, but it's the songs that make the difference, and 70's Yes songs are the greatest.............................

Not bad, only three real eyebrow-raisers on the list: Free, Cardiacs (only because I've never heard of them), and Led Zepplin. Honestly, Led Zepplin is more eyebrow-raising to me than Free; their inclusion seems more easily explained as an effort to let prog rock leech off some of Led Zepplin's (IMO undeserved) prestige than by the notion that anyone could think of them as even borderline prog. In place of the eyebrow-raisers and one or two others, I would put: Curved Air - Nobody created moodier blends of classical and rock than them. Greenslade - Nobody created more romping, fun progressive rock or exploited the multi-keyboardist format better than them. Renaissance - Nobody more convincingly delivered the grandiosity of progressive rock: classical piano, orchestration, unabashedly literary lyrics, and of course, plenty of epics. Ambrosia - Nobody better merged the genres of progressive rock and pop than they did on their self-titled debut. Lots of great commentary and surprise guests in this video, though I honestly would have made it much more concise. It could have been edited down to an even two hours without losing anything meaningful. It was worth the time expenditure; it's just that the time expenditure didn't need to be so huge.
