We are starting a series on the Rings of Power! Beginning with the elves, we will uncover what exactly the powers were of the Three Elven Rings, what made them special compared to the rings of the dwarves and men, and how they were passed on from their creator, Celebrimbor, to Galadriel, Gil-galad (eventually Elrond), and Cirdan (eventually Gandalf). Enjoy this video to learn all about Nenya, the ring of water, Vilya, the ring of air, and Narya, the ring of fire!

Will do 🥰. Also can you do a video on the Waning of the Dúnedain? How they became lesser with time, and their lifespans, wisdom, stature and strength waned. How they forgot their own architecture (forgetting how to build mighty things like Orthanc, The Rammas Echor, the Black Walls of Minas Tirith, Hornburg etc. To the point that by the late Third Age, most Gondorian commoners lived a mere 80 to 100 years. The high lords around 110 - 120 at most (the exclusions being the Stewards and his line and those of Dol Amroth (with somewhere around 130 - 135 years). Even the Dúnedain of the North, with a mere 130 - 175, the exception being Aragorn with 210 years by the end of his life (still a mere Shadow compared to his ancestors in pre-fall Nûmenor, who lived around 250 - 300 years or the kings with 350 - 450 approx). Sorry for the testament 😅, it is one of my favorite topics from the Legendarium.

It wasn’t until I started watching this and other Tolkien videos that I realized something about the elven realms of the Third Age; they don’t have any obvious fortifications. Geography aside, Rivendell and Lothlorien seem completely open compared the defensive structures built by dwarves and men, yet the ring bearers were able to keep them safe from enemies without constructed barriers. It’s also why Mirkwood was something of an outlier; Thranduil had no ring at his disposal, so his own halls were much more obviously built as a defensive stronghold.

I find the whole "preservation from the decay of time" particularly interesting. It seems that Lothlórien actually exists outside of the normal time-space-continuum. There are a few hints in "The Lord of the Rings" about this fact. For example, the members of the Fellowship don't seem to have an accurate perception of time while they stay there and later Sam discovers that more than a month has gone by despite the fact that they only stayed there for several days. Aragorn tells them that they have experienced time like the elves - as a river that flows both fast and slowly at the same time. Treebeard seems to know about this as well, because he tells the Hobbits that "they stay behind time [in Lórien]". Frodo seems to be especially perceptive about the extraordinary nature of Lórien (probably because he is the bearer of the One Ring); he describes Rivendell as a place were the memory of the elder days still lives on while in the Naith of Lórien, the elder days actually still continue. Perhaps this difference can be explained by the greater power of Galadriel?

both the Ring of Elrond and the one from Galadriel were very powerfull, however my guess it also depends on the nature of the bearer. Nenya could have been the more powerfull of all - it seems that Celebrimboor meant it to be wield by Galadriel alone ALL TIME (as there are hints of him infatuated with her however he couldn´t do that because she was his aunt and already happily married to Celeborn, so pretty much as Fëanor also got some similar incestuous inspiration of his unfullfilled love-admiration for his niece asking thrice in vain for a locket of her hair [which she actually give much later on THREE freely for Gimli, a rather more worthy and humble nice requester for that, being that another awesome theme to contrast and remember always], and because of it he made the Silmarills, so Celebrimboor did the same with the Rings of Power) - however as Gil-Galaad was the last High King of the Elves and the main wielder of Vilya, the ring was considered then the Mightiest of all, as he use it along his works against Sauron very actively, whereas Galadriel just kept if to hold on to defend her domains. Later on as, Elrond got Vilya, after Gil-Galaad knew by some vision or hunch, that he was not to survive the Last Alliance fight against Sauron, eventhough he might defeat him anyway, he was the next wielder but for sure, himself being actually a Half-Elf, not being close in all to the former bearer of the Ring who at once time, indeed have acheived a more mighty level of power than the Ring of Galadriel, because he was the High King then. So when the time of the Lord of the Rings story came, the relevance of Vilya was much of a legend after Gil-Galaad but not on true actual time since Elrond use it. Galadriel in other hand, now she didn´t have anything to rival her power, and mastered the use of the mightyness of Nenya at full lenght - thus also that way was how she got a hard trial when meeting the One Ring and almost nearly fall on the temptation to get it on her power too, though in the end, she succeded to overcome that trial, once more becoming worthy for returning to Valinor and acknowledging she must do that since her own power by her ring will be over some little time as long Frodo succeded his task. However, she wasn´t named a High Queen to rule all the High Elve lineages, eventhough she could have claimed it, and the power and the heritage rightfull to do it, but she accepted just the fate to not do it - maybe she was very haunted with memories on how all her family close-relatives who wanted power got doomed because of it, specially Fëanor and Celebrimboor in different ways for each one, so she didn´t seeked for it, untill the very end at the trial set by Frodo and the One Ring, which she succeded to avoid it once for all finishing the curse set on her family by the Valar. It seems there are some very antifeministic and very traditional conservative views about females when wielding power, about how they shouldn´t seek power on the same way as males do, eventhough they might be into a position of power earned legally by her own as one last resource finding themselves into that by others and by chance, not by their own will, which is a very true patriarchally traditional condesendant-protective way, fearing that if Galadriel seeked and acheived actively power on her own, she could be another form of evil potential even more dangerous and troublesome than Sauron or all the other male-menances at the story, as totally unleashing a more true unnatural wild force to action to which anyone is prepared to fight properly against it - some very missogynic fear upon the unexpectedly-convoluted and darker-mysterious way of thinking of female brain broking out of logics and reason when totally wild of full passionate instincts on a position of power, and not wisdom to self-moderate themselves. It´s very interesting how the more uncanny dangerous foes of all Tolkien work are females: Ungoliant, Shelob, Queen Beruthine of Gondor (with her cats) and of course, this dark Galadriel alternative-future version hinted to be. It seems that Tolkien idea, was very in tune with older classical traditional views, consolidated during his childhood and teenage years at late Victorian and the whole Edwardian ages of England, and over-all before WWI start at 1914, henceforth he though of women not seeking political-social power by their own will, neither seeking for more political-social power if they were already by change or chosen by others - men - on trust for that role, on a political-social appointment before. (He was somewhat also a bit rightfull on the more recent developments of feministic waves of their ideology, eventhough for a big while he has been proven also wrong on that conservative view.)

@@lhadzyan7300 Where are you even getting your third paragraph musings from? Galadriel WAS pretty much queen of her domain, much like Elrond. Everyone who might try to wield the One Ring is shown to be corrupted by it, except maybe Tom Bombadil, not just Galadriel (for instance Gandalf also denied it, just as she did, fearing corruption). Also pretty much all the characters who actually did fall to the Rings' corruption were male. Ungoliant and Shelob weren't just female, they also weren't human - so reading some sort of message about humanity into them is a stretch. Almost all the bad guys in LOTR are male, with Queen Beruthine being one of the only exceptions. How all this adds up to an "antifeministic" narrative is beyond me.

I love how with Tolkien's elves versus other fantasy, instead of being so magical and immortal that they show an indifference to physical and temporal things, are more bound to the world and sensitive to its decay. Humans in contrast are more free and spared from weariness, due to their mortality and the mysterious fate of their spirits beyond the world. Also, has anyone else theorized a connection between the elven rings and the preserving nature of salted pork?

I think that all three of the Elven Rings also granted (or enhanced) the power of foresight to their bearers. Vilya, especially, would have been potent in this regard, since I suspect it also granted a limited degree of clairvoyance as well--fitting, considering that there is air everywhere, and it is the Ring of Air. This power is probably the reason that Vilya ended up in Elrond's hands to begin with; Gil-galad marched into the War of the Last Alliance with the _full prior knowledge_ that, win or lose, he was going to be slain in the final battle at Sauron's hand. The combined powers of foresight and clairvoyance are what makes Elrond seem so all-knowing, despite the fact that he basically never leaves Rivendell, which in turn receives _few_ visitors, and only on _rare_ occasions; he doesn't _need_ to go anywhere to get a solid grasp on the big-picture of the happenings in Middle-Earth. This ring essentially put him on-par with the Elves of _considerably_ older generations, such as Galadriel.

I don't know about healing, but the element of air has been connected to clairvoyance and other similar powers in different things that I have read. So maybe the power of Vilya was the ability to use/enhancement of those type of powers. They say knowledge is power after all. Of course, it could (and probably is) something completely different.

I love how Cindar passes the ring to Gandalf: it is not his, but a tool for his mission: not a gift, not for his own defense or power, but for service. 8:10 Agree. If Glorfindel could not help, the ring must be important here.

You should do a what-if type series. There are arguments online about who is more powerful and who would win in a fight, etc. Gandalf vs Glorfindel is a big one. I'd love to hear your analysis on some of these controversial power scale fights.
