Western Australia was dragged kicking and screaming into federation, but I remember from what (little) research I did, South Australia was also pretty disgusted by the whole process as well. Like the cartoon you had up for Fiji and New Zealand's perspective, South Australians viewed themselves quite seperate from the East coast because they were settled almost exclusively by freed men and not convicts.

That Cartoon is also a great example of Victorian era Racialism and Social Eugenics Pseudo-Science. The depiction of Australians as a brute was a reflection of the sincere belief that because Australia had been settled by convicts and was a hot climate like the other nations British thought themselves superior to, the Australian people were inherently degenerate and would inevitably become a dysfunctional society of criminals. The Late Victorian prejudice was that there was an inheritable component to criminality and vice which needed to be bred out, which is why South Australia and New Zealand were so protective of their "Free Settler Colony" Status. Additionally Australia had a lot of Catholics at this point from Irish migration, which was considered another mark of Degeneracy by the British Empire as a whole.

The land gone asunder. That’s a cool nickname for the subcontinent of Australia. This Indian Ocean land called Draka pushed Western Australia into seceding from the commonwealth and this itself divided the whole white Australia policy. With the western republic being pro Indo European and commonwealth ending the whole white policy. Divided like Germany. East and west. This would make the GTA’s Australian war more canonical and real. Because Draka carved Australia into two. But it was also the federation that didn’t recognized Western Australia’s sovereignty. That caused the domino effect for secession. Even being its own republic. Truly a shame. But it would make good sense for Australia being so anti American because west Australia is pro Drakan

@@MSK.LThere is actually, it was completed in 1917. Western Australia is surrounded by the ocean to the north, south and west and a large desert to the east. and there is also a two hour time difference between the west and the east. This all adds to the sense of isolation and lack of physical connection to the rest of the country. That said, I must admit we can be quite parochial, because there is a general feeling that those easterners are trying to do us over on a regular basis.

I wasn't trying to say that naming it after the Swan River is the best idea, in fact I'd love to hear other proposals. I just gave out that specific idea because it's the only other alternate name I've heard than just 'Westralia'. I recognise that Western Australia is far larger then just what the Swan River covers, and as such naming it after the Swan River isn't ideal. In addition I also recognise the former use of the Swan River as a name for the colony. However, I fail see how what I said in any way implies me having 'possibly the most colonial mindset'. Accusing me of such a thing based on a single sentence is peak youtube commenter though I guess, I apologise for expecting anything more.

Something you neglected to mention was that at the time of federation one of the largest settlements in WA was a gold mining town inhabited mostly by miners from the eastern states, they threatened to annex pretty much everything east of the wheat belt and make their own state if WA didn't join the federation.

The only reason Western Australia joined was because they had a huge gold rush the year before the final referendum. Since there was free movement between the colonies, hundreds of thousands of Australians from the eastern colonies flooded across the border, were enrolled to vote, and then voted to join the federation. That's why they've always felt they were "tricked" into joining and, in a way, they were.

Great video! Western Australian secession isn't something that talked about seriously nowadays, but the people there still have an independent streak. You sometimes see WA mining executives talk about secession so WA can keep more of its mineral wealth, and if you talk to some ordinary Western Australians they'll grumble about how the eastern states take their mineral wealth in return for little. You even saw this during the COVID pandemic, when WA closed itself off to the rest of Australia, limited and sometimes banned interstate arrivals even to returning WA residents and basically acted as their own country until March of this year. To extraordinary political advantage too, the guy who closed WA to Australia had a 91% approval rating at the height of the border closures and won 53 out of 59 seats at the state election.

Westralia = Bestralia 0:34 an external territory not featured on this map are the Cocos/Keeling Islands, made up of the descendants of Malay workers who were brought there to work on a copra plantation. The islands used to be ruled by the Clunies-Ross family (who brought them there in the first place) for almost 150 years. The Malays arrived in 1826. The British annexed them in 1857 and transferred the islands to Australia in 1955. Despite this, the islands' real estate was still owned by the Clunies-Ross family until 1979. This happened in 1979 because the year before, fed up with the family's feudal style, forced them to sell the islands for over six million Australian Dollars (over 37 million in 2022 dollars). In 1984, under UN supervision, the islanders voted for integration with Australia by over 88 percent. Since 2018, the Cocos Malays have been seeking indigenous status from the government.

* Most colonies were granted "responsible government" before 1860. That meant that they elected their own governments, paid their own costs, maintained their own defence forces, etc. Britain had almost no control over them and they were *effectively* independent in all areas except foreign policy and even there, some colonies adopted their own foreign policies. So Tigerstar's depiction of them as answerable to Britain is not really accurate. If Britain had tried to intervene in any colony with Responsible Government, it would have created a huge furore, but they never did. * Western Australia had a low population and was fairly poor, so it only gained Responsible Government in 1890. They were strongly against joining the federation UNTIL they had a gold rush in the 1890s at the same time other colonies (especially Victoria) were suffering from a deep depression. The flood of Victorians (and others) migrating to W.A. tipped the balance there in favour of federation. * No other colony wanted Fiji to join the federation so it is inaccurate to say they were ever in contention. However New Zealand would have been welcome to join if they wanted to. In a time before planes, they were closer to the main cities of Melbourne and Sydney by sea than Perth was.

I think the level of autonomy we were given largely suited both Britain and the Australian colonies/states/nation just fine. Most of our trade was overwhelmingly with Great Britain and most of the Australian colonies were only started as penal colonies anyway, so the Brits didn't care if we just let the convicts run the place, so long as they were here and not there. I think they learned from their experience in 1776 and that colonies like British India were far more economically important to their mercantilist empire. So every time we've wanted a little more independence, they were like "yeah, just have it".

The mining town of Kalgoorlie in WA (which was the centre of one of the gold rushes) was only sustainable due to the water pipeline that was built from Perth to Kalgoorlie. Definitely seems like Western Australia had more of a right to call themselves as "undemocratically forced to be part of Australia" after they voted in a legal refereendum for secession but it was ignored - especially since it was the last time the people of WA were officially asked that question. Stands in contrast to Scottish or Quebecois Independence (or British EU remainer/rejoiner) supporters today. Completley reasonable to campiagn for another vote, but not reasonable to say that you're being forced to be as you are now.

Living in Western Australia right now, I can say there is still a bit of resentment towards the eastern states (basically as much as we feel towards America from what I’ve gathered from my mates) due to how much we feel we’re overlooked. I can see how this was built on from the initial referendums.

Just a bit about size and population, maybe irrelevant: A common argument people use about Australia's housing crisis (in Sydney the 2nd least affordable on Earth), is that Australians naturally chose to spread cities out because of our few people. This is a rationalisation. From about 1880 to 1930, Australia was quite wealthy, and there was the Industrial Revolution. The wealthier people could afford to build artisanic homesteads closer in the country, out of a desire to both escape the 'blight' seen in urban centres of the period, and due to romantic associations of going to the country. Of course, Aboriginal people had been unjustly dispossessed of all these Lands, without treaty, and were often subjected to the worst environments to get by (rural Australia would not be left alone either). The poorest lived in cheap, dense housing and slums to work in the city. Anyways, those suburbs are the modern inner suburbs, the most affluent and leafy ones, closest to services and jobs. Why are they still there? In an organic growth model, the quality of those suburbs expands outwards, while density grows by demand, presumably from the centre, as blocks around get sold/redevloped by landowners (only leaving occasional 'holdouts'). But by 1945, this was pretty much illegal, and is why the lowest density is jutted against the highest, no 'missing middle'. After housing and social changes, the wealthiest moved back in to city centres and cosmopolitan suburbs with main-streets (which artificially ceased growing), while poorer people and immigrants had to live live further out from services. Black Forest Family has a good video on it, but zoning was imported basically from the American Euclidean model, and it fit with white Australian policy-makers xenophobia (racism), and classism of the time. Notably, that's not very fair dinkum. Housing policy was established to house veterans of WW2, but only mass-produced low-density sprawl, which also self-defeated many of the purposes of suburbs. They're also not cheap (are subsidised by cities), restrict local business, are designed with car-dependence which creates congestion (Oh the Urbanity on that paradox), and create diminishing returns. To give comparison, without this, there could be more choice in housing, and suburban living would be total closer to services but of more diversity (eg block and house sizes, greenery, farmhouses). This can be seen in much of Europe, who, as said in the video have many more people but less land -- suburban values seem to be better fulfilled here, and therefore aren't that argued about. So, action to reverse obsolete policies is also apolitical, with massive social, environmental and economic benefits, conservative and progressive, anti-big-developer and pro-economy-of-scale, etc. Auckland in NZ is an example of actual doing something to dispel the claims that housing supply has nothing to do with it, so, yep, rant over.

The part about NZ vehemently rejecting the idea is completely inaccurate, NZ had every intention of creating a federation with the other colonies, it was a part of NSW to begin with. The NZ colonial government was at the mainland with the other colonies with the intention of signing the completed constitution. The NZ representatives disagreed with the amount of state autonomy and left without signing until it was amended at a later date. The remaining colonies didn't consider the NZ colony not signing it eventually when it was understood that the mainland colonies wouldn't budge, so the remaining colonies left New Zealand in the constitution to avoid the work required to have them enter the Federation after it was given Royal Assent by Queen Victoria. This relationship of being one group continued into the time of federation, with the two countries sharing one army called the Australia New Zealand Army Corp (ANZAC) in The Great War (WW1). Over the century since, the interpretation of New Zealand as a separate country grew to becoming normal, with the constitutional inclusion now considered a right granted to New Zealand to enter the Commonwealth of Australia as a state unilaterally. If New Zealand was willing to give up the benefits of being their own nation, they could enter as an Australian state in 2022 without any need for an Australian vote, as it is already granted in the constitution. To this day, Australian & New Zealand citizens are entitled to enter, work and reside in either country indefinitely in a similar way to the EU. The only exception is that the two governments can revoke that right for an individual citizen. The two countries also include the other's citizens in many of its government services that aren't entitled to non-ANZ citizens. The Fijian colony was briefly included in the plans of becoming a joint colonial federation, but was not received well by many from both the Fijian colony and the mainland colonies. In addition to this, both Australian's and New Zealanders held British subject status up until 1984, with Australia concluding its succession from the British government formally in 1986.

The main grievance from WA was the tariff arrangements, tariffs not really being a thing anymore. Prior to Federation each colony had it's own set of tariffs to suit its own economy. eg NSW had tariffs to protect manufacturing but no tariffs on agriculture. WA had tariffs on agriculture but not on manufacturing, (because there was none). WA bought cheap manufactured goods from Singapore and India and sold agricultural products and gold. After Federation one set of tariffs was used for the entire country. Guess which ones. It was the opposite to what WA needed, so WA went from the first gold boom in the 1890s to an economic basket case within 5 years and stayed that way. When the depression hit, people starved. That was the situation when they voted to secede because it couldn't be any worse. After the secession vote the Commonwealth Grants Commission was set up to compensate WA for Federal decisions that favoured the east, like the tariffs. The CGC has since morphed into "fiscal equalisation" which is a different thing altogether.

The thing you have to consider is how isolated WA was from the eastern states at Federation. There wasn't a land transport route at all, no roads or railways. Ship was the only way and it was about 5 times as far to sail as Melbourne to Devonport Tasmania. Essentially Western Australia was as isolated from the rest of Australia as New Zealand is. Even today there is still only 2 proper roads to the eastern states and 1 single-track railway, and those routes were essential for making WA authentically part of the rest of Australia.

@@psychedelicprawncrumpets9479 The reality at federation is important in the historic context not the situation now. Perth may as well be Auckland as far as Sydney and Melbourne were concerned in 1901. So why did WA join when NZ didn't? It's actually an arbitrary difference between the two. Ultimately the concession for WA acceptance of federation was to build the transcontinental railway and so actually connected east and west meaningfully.

WA is a boom and bust state. It's interesting that Labor is so dominant currently given that historically WA is considered to be one of the more conservative states (Queensland being the other mainland one... also that has had a Labor Government for most of the past 30 years). ScoMo and Josh FriesNBurgers really stuffed up by outsourcing quarantine to the states and then saying that states that were Covid free should open to states that were having outbreaks. No matter what you think about lockdowns and vaccine mandates, you gotta recognise that was political suicide for the Liberal Party in Western Australia.

as a West Aussie, I can attest to the unfair treatment of the people of our state, from a lower revenue per capita from GST revenue from federal government to the continued narrative that our voice doesn't count. This federal election was the first to be not called before polling had closed in our state, using media to induce a phallicy that our votes count. What was glossed over in your video was that most of the residing men were conscribed for WW1 from WA did not return and the losses were unfathomable, near on destroying our states ability to continue to survive, let alone prosper. The referendum to succeed was then not recognised by British parliament, further reinforcing the narrative that the voice of Western Australia doesn't count for anything. Western Australia is overlooked for major infrastructure investment, and will never see the Olympics as the infrastructure investment required will not gain the political votes as in the eastern states...
