I don’t rotate my garden beds simply because at 1200 ft.² the garden is too small. I usually get a decent crop of potatoes, but last fall after harvest I planted a winter rye cover crop and this year I applied a calcium extract to the ground and plants because I had reason to believe it was lacking. This year I have the best potato harvest I’ve ever had!

I cover crop with black eyed peas, winter rye and navy beans. The goal for me is to just put some quick root mass and nitrogen in the soil while preserving the micro biome. I plant very late like October/November so they all die off before seed. I’m in zone 8 though.

i am so glad i found your channel. I tried to figure out which cover crops would be best for my zone 5b and asked several people for 3 years now. Nobody would give me a clear answer. you did it in one sentence. I also tried to donate but paypal wont let me without an account. I'm going to start me barrel of fertilizer this fall with my garden plants but only fill about 1/3 full so the barrel wont crack. Also going to mow down the rest of the plants and put on the garden/crop residue. I have compost i made and chicken manure to put on top this fall. I have watched many of your videos and hope to implement most of it. copied your fertilizing schedule and going to implement it next year. I'm 68 and been gardening all my life but learn more every year. I prayed for a way to stop spending so much money on fertilizer and then found you. Thank you very much. I have been spending a fortune on organics. I have used a lot of natural techniques but hope to do more. I need to grow cover crops and another field of winter rye for seed. not sure if i can collect mamoth red seed or not, but I have a chicken garden/25x75 garden I can plant grains and such in. I don't even want to buy seed for cover crop. i have saved seed now for a few years and believe I have all my favorites saved now. Do you know how save seed long term? A video on that would be beneficial. Blessings to you and your family.

Nathaniel, I recently discovered your stuff. I am a market gardener and homesteader on 160 acres of hay land/forest in central/northern Canada, with a 5 acre center of residence/gardening, with two decades of raising veggies under my belt, but always learning. I have found you a rich source of information for one who already knows a little. So, I want to say "hi" and "thanks," and let you know I sent a small token of my appreciation--the farmer cheese info was tops--most of these want you to use vinegar or lemon but that just isn't the same thing, now, is it? The farmer cheese and fermented tomatoes (I am comfortable doing ferments--have done it for years) are all that you claim--DEE-VINE! I love what you are doing, and wish I could apply more of it at the scale at which I do things (for instance, 2500 heads of garlic) but I am pretty much a one man operation, here and cannot get enough leaf mould to cover everything, for instance, but I appreciate all of it and look to incorporate what works, here.
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking Жыл бұрын
thank you Kevin... yes the method of using an acid like vinegar or lemon is just "curdling" the milk and does so with chemistry... where the LABS actually does the process with biology and living organisms do the conversion... its a truly living food!.. What do you use to add fertility to the land after the garlic harvest?... I'd suggest a run of bush green beans or any other fast legume that'll be killed off by the frost because then you can supercharge the soil... thats what I do

@@gardenlikeaviking my wife has horses which I find useful for producing soil amendments. I have mountains of composted manure that get worked in. I am usually too late getting current crops out to put in cover crops, although I have done it. I need another large plot so I can do rotations/cover-cropping, but if my wife sees me open up more ground, it could be dangerous to my health and well-being, lol. Last time I did this, it only expanded my operation and I still don't have proper rotation going on because I fill up all my garden space every year. I just finished getting out my potato crop of about 750 plants.

A lot of times tomatoes get leaf spot. It is very prevalent in parts of the US for tomatoes. What are your thoughts on the possibility or not of returning plant matter from spent tomato plants back to the soil and possibly causing various diseases to over winter in the soil exacerbating the issue? Obviously going through a large tomato garden and removing all diseased leaves prior to chopping them up would be impractical. Though, the idea of returning the organic matter back into the soil is appealing. Just curious on your thoughts on this issue.

Nate, I seem to remember your instructions were to wait until the seed heads show up on the winter rye before termination in spring so that the rye “thinks” it is done with its job (to reproduce) but I’m having difficulty finding that in the videos. Honestly I learn and retain much more readily reading something rather than hearing it aloud. I would love it if you would put instructions in an e-book and no doubt others as well as myself would gladly pay for it.
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking Жыл бұрын
yes I am currently beginning the conceptual work on making an e-book so thank you!... I'll make videos about how/when to terminate the rye because I have not yet done that... short answer is yes... wait until the seed heads become large enough when you pinch them with your fingers they secrete a "milky" looking liquid.... this is called the "milk stage".... thats when to terminate

All summer long was over a 100 degrees fahrenheit. No amout of water saved them, the plants just bake in the Sun. I think I lost 2/3'ds of my crop due to excessive heat.

the dutch white clover would be a good living mulch but it will not "cycle" like certain other cover crops would do... meaning it will just reseed itself and basically keep growing.... for you ATM I wouldn't worry too much about cover crops until you get this first big season under your belt and experience the lessons it has in store for you!!... How long do u leave the fabric on top? Related question: do you have to kill the cover crop completely? Or does it die from the mowing?
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking Жыл бұрын
you can leave the fabric on all season and just burn holes into it and plant directly into it... or just leave it on a week or two then remove and plant... when doing the crops at the right time it dies from the mowing... you can also "crimp" it down and leave it sort of half living but thats a lot more advanced of a technique

So, with all the roots still in the ground, how do you plant in a month? Tough to make rows. Is the black plastic application for a month enough to kill the roots to prevent the rye from wanting to grow again? ThanQ in advance!
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking Жыл бұрын
so long as its cut at the right time the rye will not grow again... the black fabric is to help warm the soil and speed the decomposition of the roots and plant matter... the rye roots decompose very quickly in this way and it doesn't matter even if you plant into them immediately it still works fantastic

Hey Nate, this is my first attempt at cover cropping using winter rye, my first bed I had sown into is at a stage where it looks like a dense sea of green but everything seems weighed down. Healthy but weighed down, basically flopped over into the pathways. So my question is, is this the stage in its growth where it is coming to the “flag” stage? Just before what you described as the “milk” stage? Thanks man appreciate the wisdom you’ve shared
@gardenlikeaviking

it has to go through the "straw" stage first before the milk stage... if you're anywhere in zone 4, 5 or 6 then its for sure nowhere near the milk stage... it'll flop over and look heavy but then it'll shoot up tough straw-like stalks... you could email me a pic if you really need to know then I could tell you for sure

@@gardenlikeaviking I also recently purchased a 5lb can of winter rye, but it was for making rejuvelac. But dang, that stuff sprouts fast. Twice as fast as the wheat it seems. Maybe I'll experiment in a small area with the wheat I have and see how it performs. Is it worth purchasing hard red winter wheat if I already have the rye?

@@sweepingpage1845 I would use a bit of both the wheat you already have and the rye... no need to buy anything additional that'll work

First thing that came to my mind: I think creeping charlie is my cover crop. Not sure if that's supposed to be a joke or if there's something there.

creeping Charlie is a quite an issue because it can strangle out the crops we want to grow... yet its almost impossible to rid the garden of it completely!!

@@gardenlikeaviking Yeah it's an invasive little monster but when I clear it away in the spring to start planting it's not hard to remove. It's very hard to get rid of permanently, but easy to clear away for planting (I have sandy soil so it gives up weeds easily). It leaves behind a matrix of roots which is a good think per my new understanding (soil with roots > soil without roots). It never really recovers until the next season, when I just clear it away again. I would never tell anyone to deliberately propagate it, but as curses go one could do a lot worse. And it does choke out nastier things before I get around to clearing it while providing blooms for early pollinators to draw nectar from. It might not be so bad.

Wouldn't it be better if you could use several different types of plants in the cover crop? Better diversity of plants and biology.

What is wrong with cover crops that are winter-killed? Fave beans or whatever can be planted in the fall and allowed to grow until winter killed, leaving behind a good quantity of green manure. Rye is a pain if you don’t have power tools/tractors etc o terminate it when you want to plant in the spring.. Red clover is also winter killed, which is exactly why i use it. The soil is ready to plant after spring thaw for cold crops. I guess I don’t understand your approach?

sure that can work for you... but as the previous video explains, I prefer to have a living root in the ground all winter and spring so something being winter killed is not as effective... terminating winter rye is very easy if done at the right time... just cut it down and thats it... please watch this video here and then comment on it if you like: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ea97lL2HqcitiI0.html
