The Doctors companions are such a key part of Doctor Who's identity, I think that some of the best Tenth doctors episodes are when he is alone. In this video I look at one of Tennant's most frightening moments from 'The Waters of Mars', diving into what happened to The Doctor when he travelled alone.

So many people cheer the Doctor on in that moment when he rages at the laws of time, but I found it scary.

Eleven was the man who forgot because Ten couldn’t take it anymore

This constant feeling that we get from undercurrents in Ten’s behavior, Eleven’s demeanor in his darker moments, and Twelve’s few moments of real fury, is that the Doctor CAN do anything that he wants, but he has to physically hold himself back. I love the idea that a powerful creature such as the Doctor, that can do anything, is not held back by lack of power, but rather by abundance of it, and the only thing that can defeat him, not in a physical sense, but in a mental one, is solitude. Solitude will tear him apart from the inside, the only true way to destroy the Doctor’s spirit. The Time Lord Victorious is the perfect example of one half of his personality, and it’s not the human half. It’s the raw, powerful, soulless half, that comes out in rare moments when it’s needed, always in moderation, never out of fear or desperation, always out of need. Balance with his human soul is needed, and this video does a great job of explaining in detail his mental state as loneliness crushes that side of him. Look at me, I’ve written a book. TLDR: I love the idea of the Time Lord Victorious and what it means for the Doctor’s character, and this vid explains it really well.

Great video. I remember watching this when I was little and was not prepared for the captain to do what she did in her apartment.

Yeah it was pretty shocking... and made even more so because the doctor was responsible for it

This is one of my favourite episodes due to the fact we see 10 at his most unhinged. Everything this Doctor has gone through has led up to this moment and it did not disappoint. Great analysis btw!

100%, seeing him get to this point is just so powerfully shocking I love it 🙌

@@RamblingManYT exactly! Shocking yet so right for the character's progression. You summed it up perfectly (and I didn't realise until you said it) when you said that all of his companions had left at that point. He basically has nothing left to lose and so having him try and control the laws of time only for it to backfire and make him realise that his actions can't stop the inevitable.

Great … I admire David Tennant’s acting skills so much… he is amazing…. He made me cry … sob… when we lost him… it killed me how alone he was. And it’s killing me that we will lose him again.

For real there are so many moments where you believe that the Doctor is a real person and you really feel for him. DT did such an outstanding job playing the Doctor. I love him

You haven’t mentioned it at all, but I’m fairly certain this moment specifically shows parallels between him and The Master. You can really feel it with the was he screams “...and they will obey me!”. And when someone questions and/or objects his new worldview, he replies with only “Tough”. Now, doesn’t that sound familiar?.. I’m not the best at explaining it, so you should probably just look into that yourself. Seriously, some of his quotes are definitely lifted directly off of Master. It’s not a coincidence.

I always felt this was leading up to him becoming the Valyard. See classic who. But in context outside of the lore it made sense because of his journey up to this point.

I always think it’s a little funny when people say that Martha was ‘lost’ because she is one of the few modern companions who actually got to go back to her life, in her time, completely alive and unharmed. Rose, Donna, Amy, Rory, Clara, Bill, they all died, or were forced to live apart from the Doctor and their families, or stripped of a part of their identity. Martha just got to go home and live a (honestly probably better) version of her normal life.

To me, the 10th Doctor will always be the scariest, darkest, angriest, and most powerful incarnation of The Doctor

I think a really interesting thing about the idea of the timelord victorious that I've not seen anyone talk about Its stated that the Valeyard is an incarnation of the doctor "sometime between his 12th and final incarnation" Based on the logic used by Smith's doctor in "the time of the doctor", the war doctor is the 9th incarnation, Eccleston is the 10th, Tennant before "the stolen earth" is the 11th, and Tennant after "the stolen earth" is the 12th, with Smith being the final incarnation before the timelords granted him more regenerations Based on this, my headcannon is that when the doctor became the timelord victorious, two paths presented themselves. He either turns back after seeing how far he went (which is what we see in the episode), or he continues along an alternate timeline as a tyrant and a darker version of his former self. I think the choice we see made by the doctor fractures the timelines in two in such a way that the alternate darker timeline becomes a parralel universe, where Tennant's doctor has now become the valeyard Just speculating of course, but I think this would be really cool

I'm pretty sure the Time Lord Victorious on Big Finish explores this, but I haven't read any audiobooks from Big Finish yet, so I wouldn't know.

Timelord Victorious is such a perfect way to describe the darker form of The Doctor. Two contrasting entities but with the same parts, the only difference is their mindset; A Timelord Victorious is selfish, will rain hell and destroy anything if he so decides, 12th and 11th (to some degree) had these moments, 12th with his "The Doctor is no longer here, you are stuck with me! And I will end you. And everything you love" 11th had a comparatively smaller moment but still rather impactful with "Good men don't have any rules, now's not the time to find out why I have so many"

I agree this ranks at the top of the most scary and sobering moments of the 10th Doctor. Very close second are the ending scenes of The Family of Blood. Chilling montage there. We were lucky to get Tenant as the Doctor. Such a tremendous actor. He really excels at playing unhinged characters. He’s great at playing good guys, but he is unforgettable when he plays the evil ones.
