Point - “The weather wasn’t doing the team any favors in the box office” Counterpoint - the weather helped the team reach 4 Super Bowls in 8 years and haven’t been back since moving indoors. The only away playoff game in that span was at Dallas in 1973. They should probably move back outside.

Competitiveness and money are two different things. It doesn't matter that the Vikings were one of the best teams of the 60s and 70s during their run at the Met, only that fans wouldn't show up to games due to the weather (and remember, this was before the advent of cable and on-demand). The Vikings in general are one of the NFL's more successful teams, being the winningest team to have never won a Super Bowl. It hasn't helped with their perpetual stadium or attendance issues however.

I know the city wouldn't go for it, but with the Vikings new stadium, they really should have went with a retractable roof, and then open it up every December. The home field advantage the Vikings got from the Minnesota winters definitely helped them, even in their 2015 playoff game against the Seahawks.

A move to Birmingham could've been viable for the Vikings in the '70s. However, considering the shape that Legion Field's in as of 2021, even its last tenant, UAB football, wants no part of it anymore. UAB's moving its football program to Protective Stadium at the BJCC.

It is the same size as the original Texas Stadium but was a lot nicer inside. It was built to attract a new franchise or move an existing one in. It would have been to small to ever host a Super Bowl (as was Texas stadium). The old Texas Stadium was a horrible stadium. The hole in the roof allowed the sun in and with the addition of 60+ thousand folks it would get extremely hot in summer on the field. They had to call medical services for several players at halftime on numerous occasions. The Metrodome and Fords field hold the same.

The Atlanta minor league team of the late 80s to early 90s moved to Quebec to become a minor league team there in 1993. Finally the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg in 2012 to bring back the Jets. Problem with the Metrodome is it was already obsolete by the time it opened. It was at least one of the last of the cheap, dual purpose stadiums built during that era. 1:51 - I must ask: what is this clip from? I'm referring to the shot of one player in a Minnesota Twins home uniform and another player in a Washington Senators road uniform walking across a field. I suspect that it is probably from a 1961 game between the Twins and the expansion Senators, and that you included it just to illustrate the two names together. But if it was some kind of transitional promotion showing the move of the original Senators to Minnesota, then I would be most interested to know about that.

The Boston Patriots played in many different stadiums during their first several AFL seasons. They became "New England" after they moved to Foxborough in 1971. The Vikings never played a game in the AFL. Rozelle lured them to the NFL and was happy to have them play in Metropolitan Stadium rather than in the AFL. After the merger was complete and the NFL became a monopoly, they forced the Vikings to get a better home.

That was a late-in-the-game scenario, the ownership group shunning the AFL at the last minute. The AFL had to scramble to replace them, and that's how the Oakland Raiders were born.
@shackdaddy7106
@shackdaddy7106 Жыл бұрын
Having grown up in Minneapolis I can confirm what JAGMAN is saying. Metropolitan Stadium was fine for baseball. But it was a lousy football stadium. It got cold and windy. But it did give the Vikings one hell of a home-field advantage especially when they play the Rams for the NFC championship in 1973, 1974 and 1976. Southern California boys could not take the cold. One more note about the Vikings. They were originally going to be part of the American football league in 1960. But the NFL had decided to expand and they offered Minnesota a team. Which of course the Minnesota investors took because the NFL was the more established league. So the AFL was down to seven teams before the first season. They were able to find some investors in Oakland to be the eighth team which would replace the Vikings in the AFL. And of course that team became the Oakland Raiders, then the Los Angeles Raiders, and the Oakland Raiders again and then finally and hopefully forever the Las Vegas Raiders. Regarding any NFL team moving to Birmingham there is already a professional team in the state of Alabama. The Alabama Crimson Tide. and if you don’t think they are professional you are not paying attention especially in the last year and a half or so. And Birmingham is only 58 miles away from Tuscaloosa. I know that because that is what Siri told me.

Small point, but Minnesota did have professional baseball before the Twins. The Minneapolis Millers and the St. Paul Saints both played AAA baseball, and they even played occasional crosstown doubleheaders. This also applies to the Falcons, as the AFL had awarded then Falcons owner Rankin M. Smith Sr. an AFL Franchise, so the NFL counter-offered him with an NFL Franchise; Smith went with the NFL. Actually the franchise that became the Vikings was the AFL franchise. In an attempt to kill the AFL in its infancy, the owners of the AFL franchise were lured over to the NFL. In response, the AFL decided to go head-to-head with another NFL team and put a team in the Bay Area, and so were born the Oakland Raiders. The Dallas Texans were Lamar Hunt's team, so the NFL created the Cowboys to directly compete with the Texans. After three seasons in Dallas, and winning the 1962 AFL Championship, the Texans surrendered Dallas to the Cowboys and the Kansas City Chiefs came into being.

If Birmingham got an NFL team, they'd play second fiddle to the Alabama Crimson Tide. I'm not joking. They're run like a pro team, they pull revenue like a pro team, their regional fan base is at least bigger than any NFL team in the south. They keep expanding Bryant Denny because there's such a demand for tickets. If the university could put in 40,000 more seats tomorrow, they'd sell every one of them.
