The Tiniest Bird You've Ever Seen - Zebra Finch Hatching

A Chick Called Albert

A Chick Called Albert

Жыл бұрын

This is the smallest bird I've ever hatched. After a little Finch had lost her partner, I was asked if she could stay in my big Aviary. When I returned home after picking her up, on the way back she had laid an egg in the little transport box! Birds only do this when they have an egg that needs to be laid.
I knew there was only a small chance she would accept and hatch this egg in an actual nest herself, but I wanted to try before I set plan B in motion…

The best thing I've seen on KZfaq. As a small boy I raised a Great Tit, Magpie & blackbird. All adapted to their own kind and the magpie came back to see me for about 6 hrs 1 year later. He tapped on my bedroom window, I took him in to mum and dad's bedroom to show him off. I fed him, we played together, we visited his old haunts then Monty went. 53 years ago. I loved them all.

Yeah birds are weird. When mother birds feed their young babies, they literally stick their whole ass beak into the babies mouth and vomit up food directly into an area in the upper esophagus called the "crop." When birds finally eat on their own, they also collect food in this area before it goes in the stomach. With the baby, you can see the yellow food in the crop after the feeding. This is why it looked like the baby bird was trying to swallow that feeding tube.

I had finches for a while. They’re the sweetest little things. I had two females and two makes - a pair each of two different kinds. And I ended up with three clutches of eggs over the time I had them. The little ones were taken to a locally owned bird shop to be rehomed. They lived my babies because they were well domesticated. I even saved the life of one of my mama birds. She was passing an egg that broke inside her. I had to carefully remove it and then nurse her back to good health. I had no idea what I was doing but she made a full recovery and developed an even stronger bond with me after that. 💖

You always know just what to do to give animals their best shot at life! You really are a special man! My mom had zebra finches as pets. She didn't know one was male and one was female. One day she saw eggs in the nest! They hatched and she had a house full of baby zebra finches! Those were the tiniest eggs and birds I ever seen in my life!

I was looking at videos of Zebra Finches and saw this. Read about 10 of the comments and couldn't really add to all the comments, just agree with them & how you've touched my heart. If the world had more people like you it would be a much better place!! Cried tears of joy! I grew up in a home with a canary that danced & a parakeet. Later, after my divorce, I bought 2 Zebra finches & 2 other finches. They were such a joy! I had them for 5 years & sadly gave them away when I moved for a time to Alaska. I would love to have some again. Thank you for reminding me how special they are. 😁♥

Birds actually have quite large crops, it just doesn’t occur to us how big they are because usually they are covered with feathers. But in this case, (a featherless baby bird with basically clear skin) we can see wonderfully just how big it is!

@@arthur4494 It does. If I remember correctly, Mary Carl said that they will keep asking for food even after their crop is full. I think she said you go by feel and stop when their crop feels firm because that means it's full. It was pretty cool watching her demonstrate with her baby pigeons. They had feathers already, but when she lifted the feathers we could still see the white food through their skin. And she showed how it was still squishy before it was full. It must have been so much harder for Alwyn to get it just right with his tiny zebra finch baby.
