20 rep squats were apparently THE training goal back in the 50s n 60s. see: peary rader, joe hise, jon mccallum, reg park [who reportedly could swuat 500x20] and many other lads of past generations. i doubt they went below parallel but in any case they still trained hard.

Bill Kazmier, who was there, also considered Hatfield and Arcidi's records to be fake weights while casting doubt on the Platz vs Hatfield "Ico-Pro" event in Germany, at which Platz set this record. Kaz would not lift for the Hawaiian based federation that hosted the events at which those records were broken. He makes an interesting case, comparing Hatfield's 1008 at that Hawaiian event to a mainland US event - that they both lifted at 2 months later - where Hatfield apparently had trouble even walking out something like 870.

I have an Ironman magazine from February 1995 that had a Tom Platz feature and interview. While rereading last week ...... Ironman What was the heaviest weight you used on the squat during your intermediate stage of your training? Tom Platz: Let me think back now because it's been a long time. I would say back than my best would've been around 500 pounds for a double or a triple. Later I was able to do much more---615 for as many as 15 reps.

If they’re going to attempt this as ‘The Tom Platz squat challenge’ They should HAVE TO squat to the depth Tom does with the same close stance Tom uses. Otherwise they aren’t Tom Platz style squats.. Tom had WAAAY bigger legs than any of those guys, so you can’t use the excuse that its actually deeper than it looks because of the size of their quads.

Another issue with low bar squats for a lot of reps is that the bar can slide down every time you brace/breathe no matter how tight you are and balance becomes an issue as you need to lean over more and more as the bar slides down. Takes a toll on the elbows too.

The elephant in the room here is platz trained as a bodybuilder for decades which is way more conducive to this than powerlifting. Power lifters just aren’t wired for this. Probably take a while to transition to high volume work.

I reckon Chris duffin in his prime could've done it. Hes squatted over 800lbs many times and has pulled 675 for 20 reps in the sumo deadlift so I don't think it would be a stretch to say he could a similar number for squats.

For the cocaine thing, wouldn’t taking cocaine as essentially pre workout be a huge risk cardiovascularly? Like even acutely, cocaine could make you have a heart attack and I imagine with a massive effort like 525x23 it would be even more likely and thereby not worth the risk?

I think Platzs record is legit. He could have won Mr Olympia, but focused on legs just because he wanted and this made his physique unbalanced. He openly talked about steroids in 80s which was really taboo and it compromised his career. Seems like honest guy to me. He has many eyewitnesses who saw him squat 3 and 4 plates, in random gyms, for insane number of reps AND sets. One scenario that could have happened is that event organizers put 40lb plates masked as 45lb plates and kept it silent without telling anyone. 10 plates x 5lb = 50lb less weight on bar. Well never know what actually happened.

Tom Platz has the best legs ever!!!! Also I wanna mention he probably did those 23 reps without really training to do such feat. If Tom actually took like 6 months to train for something like this, like all the guys that challenged him are doing this now. Tom would have done closerr to 30 reps i bet.
