Buddy played anything put in front of him in these TV situations. Those of us who saw him play live knew we were witnessing something we would never see or hear again. I cherish each of the concerts I saw. Buddy will always be in a category all his own.

Oh it wasn't just television. He played a small restaurant one time with a trio and a freakin bebop kit was up there. Buddy looked at it, frowned and went to work playing. Never touched a thing.

Can't read thread now. Anyone know why there's so much tape on every drum and cymbal? Why would he have played such a set? Why would they make him play that? First time to see that. Almost insulting, isn't it?

Great to see and hear. Man I MISS Buddy Rich. Saw him Live the first time in 1972, and many times there after. ALWAYS great.

I got to see Buddy play live just once, when I was about thirteen. I remember wondering how I would ever dare touch a drum set again after watching the master.

Thanks so much for posting these videos. Buddy and Johnny were 2 of my all time favorite people in show biz. Antenna TV shows Johnny shows but they do not show many with musical numbers. Plus, they air the same episodes over and over.

These drums used to stay at NBC for Buddy to use when he played the Tonight Show. They were angled completely different than Buddy’s gigging setup, yet Buddy never touched a thing. Not a cymbal tilted, Tom or anything. This was him playing anyone’s kit. He just sat down and played the drums. And if he didn’t quite get the clarity on a hit he wanted, he never made an excuse for a single thing.

Generally, Pro Drum Shop in Hollywood would send over a set for Buddy, since he typically would appear once every 3 months (not a strict rule, obviously).

Boy does this put a smile on your face. Nice to see BR and Jay Corre together again. But those drums....what the heck?! You'll notice Buddy barely touches any of the toms. You gotta wonder how something like that happens...or doesn't happen. Doesn't reflect well on the show or Ludwig for that matter.

I think Alex Van Halen must have snuck in and put the duct ape on those toms?

Yeah I'm sure he did want to hit those toms all taped killing the sound of the drum.. I wonder where they found that set that's ridiculous.

That wasn't Jay Corre but Ernie Watts, who was with Buddy's band in the mid 60's

Watching a bunch of these seems they use that set like two or three times and then the visit after this in 1985 they had a kit just like his. The solo on this chart, Bugle Rall Rag, usually tended to be snare heavy anyway. It’s nice he got to play a tune out of his own book. A lot of time it would write special ‘head’ charts to save and licensing fees And just play something real quick for Buddy to build a solo off of.

TINNY LUDWIGS ALWAYS SOUND TOO TREBLE. THEY SHOULD OF HAD JOHNNY'S SET. THE ONE BUDDY GOT FOR HIM. A--BEAUTIFUL ONE-OF-A-KIND. SLINGERLAND !!!!! THEN HE WOULD PLAY ALL OF IT!! BEST DAM DRUMS I EVER PLAYED.....NEVER SAID NOTIN BOUT LUDWIG!

Buddy did play Ludwig drums and endorsed them for a period of time. He also played and endorsed Rogers. His snare drum of choice was Fibes. BTW Ludwig and Slingerland sound virtually the same given the same sizes, same heads and tuning. If you closed your eyes you would not be able to tell the difference.

Look at all the tape on the toms. Buddy never muffled his toms...who was the idiot who would have done that. A good way to spoil the Ludwig sound.

I agree with you 1,000% on all that tape. Who in the world would have the greatest drummer in the world play those drums with all of that tape on the tom-toms. DAVID SAELENS (drummer, Rock Island, Illinois) (posted 15 NOV. 2018)

Matthew Paluch OK that’s really good news and when they bring them back I wanna buy a Slingerland drum set. OK we also have to bring back the drawer of the Rogers drum set line they were very good drums and they were made in Ohio Michigan. When CBS instruments on fender guitars they also on Rogers drums and bands that were in Dorst by Fender also got free Roger strums to use they were really good drums also

That was the sound engineer at The Tonight Show, he did the same thing to Ed Shaughnessy’s drums. Back then wannabe sound engineers would make you bust your ass to play just so they could get a dry sound and not have to do crap to it. We couldn’t see the batter side of the bass, but I bet it had tape and muffling all over it. Buddy could care less, he could wail on a phone book if he had to.

It took Buddy's daughter having a baby to turn Buddy from a slob to a kindly old gent. I'm sure that little grandchild made buddy realize what a prick he was to everyone all those years.

I hate this arrangement, no matter what band plays it, it has too many weak spots when the rhythm section drops out. Sounds like everybody slows down to me.
