Every year, OSHA publishes a list of the Top 10 Most-Cited OSHA Violations. In all honesty, the list doesn't change much from year to year. What is useful though, is knowing what OSHA is citing companies for so you can understand the big issues, and how your business can avoid them.
The Top 10 Most-Cited OSHA Violations of 2019 in this video included:
10. With 1,411 OSHA violations, coming in at #10 we have eye and face protection violations.
9. With 1,743 OSHA violations we have machines and machine guarding.
8. Next up at #8 with 1,773 OSHA violations, Fall protection training requirements in construction. This one makes the list most years. Remember, if you don’t document it, it didn’t happen.
7. With 2,093 OSHA violations coming in #7 is powered industrial trucks AKA the forklift standard.
6. In 6th place with 2,345 OSHA violations, we have ladders, under the construction standard.
5. With 2,450 OSHA violations is respiratory protection.
4.In fourth place with 2,606 OSHA violations is control of hazardous energy, or you may know it as the Lockout Tagout standard.
3.In third place with 2,813 OSHA violations is scaffolding, general construction requirements.
2.Pulling ahead by 800 OSHA violations in second place is the hazard communication standard with 3,671 violations.
1. And last, with a whopping 6,100 OSHA violations, coming in at number one is fall protection in the construction industry. This one has topped the list for 9 years a row now and it’s not necessarily surprising since falls in the construction industry are still the number one cause of fatalities.
Now, if you want to be able to anticipate what the major sources of OSHA violations will be in 2020, the past is a pretty good indicator of the future.
I checked out the Top 10 Most-Cited OSHA Violations for the past three years and here they are. As you can see not a lot changes from year to year.
So, now you know the Top 10 Most-Cited OSHA Violations of 2019. Can you prevent them in your own workplace in 2020?

Thank you for sharing this. Many business owners tend to take for granted safety because they give more priority to their business's income. They just get things done when they know there's an audit or inspection coming up. But for me business will run smoothly if you follow OSHA's rules. Safety first!

This fear is why it's not uncommon on larger sites for most trades to 'call it a day' when OSHA shows up... texts go out to all trades almost instantly, everyone hard hats up and heads for the exit. 😂

What gets me is they call it a top step on the ladder but you can't "step" on it. Which is why is should be called a tool platform instead of a "step" . When one hears "step" it's something to step on

i need some help. i work in an agricultural feed plant. my employer requires everyone to take a half hour un-paid lunch. i think it's wrong to leave a series of machines unattended for a half hour. no one else in the plant is trained on these machines. im still responsible for the quality of the product while im punched out. can you point me in the right idrection?
@jimbom6457

most of the lines are shut down for lunch. there are 2 lines that are run by one operator each. These 2 line operators are still required to take a half hour lunch, and management wants us to keep the machines running, so they keep making money.

i just took over this line. im going to be the only one in the plant trained on it. my trainer would let the machine run while he was punched out. he'd work extra hard before lunch so the machine wouldn't run out, and he'd work extra hard after lunch to catch up. i know this isn't right

I'm originally from Montana where the attitude is pretty similar. But I'd say that even if you're less concerned about the regulations, it's still good to know the main issues so you can see where people tend to get hurt, and prevent yourself from ending up in the same situation.

Even if you thought all that. If its dissaproved of, and caught by OSHA, be prepared to waste even more time, and-or money. Yeah there's faster and more efficient ways to do things, and most rules suck, but dealing with beurocrats, and or the death/injury of your employees is 10X worse!!

Thankfully, there are organizations like OSHA that protect workers’ rights. Unfortunately, despite the strict safety rules imposed, it is not uncommon to see people violating OSHA rules because of the tight time frames enforced by their employers to get things done. I understand the nightmare that it can be for a business owner have someone injured at work, but people safety is always first!

We live on a farm so a day when we don’t break the law is very rare. Welding with a 60 year old welder with a t shirt and shorts and no gloves because screw it I’ll only be welding for a few minutes is par for the corse Everyone here also hates workplace health and safety rules (me included) because it’s worked fine since the 60s so just wrap it in electrical tape and she’ll be right.

My dad is nearing his 40ies, and he is an absolute unit while he welds. No gloves, no eye protection, no long sleeves etc. He just closes his eyes when welding and doesn't give a damn. I worked with him for a while on his workplace to help him out for some money while the school period was over and holy shit he doesn't care about any safety measures.
