Unbelievable quality in this list. "Brazil" and "Ran" are two timeless masterpieces. Apart from those two, my other 4 favourites are: - "To Live and Die in L.A." - "Runaway Train" - "After Hours" - "Year of the Dragon"

so glad to see To Live and Die in LA on here. that’s definitely my #1 of 85. I would give a lot to be able to go back and relive the ending again. I don’t think anything has ever shocked me to that degree. what a film! love your lists.

I ended up grabbing Ran on blu-ray from my local library network upon your recommendation here. I can't believe I hadn't seen this yet. What a life-changing film. Thank you so much for including it on your list- it's one of the absolute best.

ok, ok, I'll give in and add it to my watch list. I've seen it mentioned several times, even watched a bit of the trailer, and still pushed away from it as it's not my language. But, finally I will relent my ego! Due to your comments I must give it a try and push through.

I saw Come and See back in 2021. Had no words at what I saw once it was finished. Imagine trying to do the same thing but from the Axis (and to lesser extent Allies) like Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of Our Fathers but as legit horror movie. While Philip Glass’ score for Mishima was excellent. And made it to the first three hours of Shoah.

Your lists are great, they helped me get through my bout with Covid this week, thanks. My favorite film of 1985 is Fandango with Kevin Costner and Judd Nelson. A great film about friendship and the end of an era for a group of college friends and their quest to relive it all one last time before life, war and responsibility break them apart.

I forgot to mention Fandango! Good movie. Think it has my favourite Costner performance in it. Hope you feel better

Incredible list. Your knowledge on movies is crazy. I was born in 93 and it's fun looking at these type of videos of all these films that came out before I was born. Another movie in 85 that I thought was great, was one I found by accident during my teenage years. It's called "Heart of Dragon" and it features Jackie Chan playing a cop who tries to balance his love life with taking care of his mentally disabled nearly 30 year old brother played by Sammo Hung. It's comedic, has great action choreography and very emotionally intense when it comes to the scenes with Jackie and Sammo. It's a movie I can put on and enjoy at anytime.

A bit late on this one, but great video! 1985 certainly was one of the best years for film. I know I said Come And See was my favorite, and I still think it's one of the best ever made, but some time inbetween this video and the last top 10, I gave Mishima a rewatch and ... Well, excuse my French here, but holy shit, I literally transcended. I basically think I had a religious experience lmao. Mishima is now my all-time favorite film. I still understand why it didn't make the list though, as it certainly isn't a film for everyone, but it certainly is the film for me. Still, great job on this video! This one is among your best. Cheers!

A little late to the channel, I'm afraid. Surprised at your family connections, but never mind. Just getting into all the lists! I'll suggest The Falcoln & The Snowman, with Timothy Hutton & Sean Penn in a brilliant and often overlooked role. SO glad somebody remembers After Hours!

My top ten are 1. Pee Wees Big Adventure 2. Ran 3. My Life As A Dog That's it. I really didn't enjoy 80's movies for the most part. The non stop action and horror movies were, for the most part, garbage. I wasn't able to afford a VCR yet so I was stuck watching movies on cable tv. I'm so glad this era is long gone.

I grew up in 1985 I was born in that year I don't party that remember that far back but I'm remember all the classic films from Walt Disney pictures that came out in that year from the 1985 Walt Disney Pictures The Black Cauldron. In 1989 Nemo Adventures of Summerland a Walt Disney Pictures film those were the two I really liked for out the whole '80s. Little Mermaid was good too a good animated classic. That came out on home video I think around men around the 90s. Cinderella was good came out during my grandma's time the 1940s. And Walt Disney's pictures Pinocchio good Disney classic. To be honest I like all the Walt Disney movies I had watched throughout my whole life growing up I love them all and it's always been a treasure to my heart.

Granted, this is a tough year to rank. I would argue that "Come And See" is one of the greatest war movies ever made. And "Shoah" is one of the greatest documentaries ever made. I saw Brazil on video back in the late 80s in my H. S. film club. Like most good Americans, I despised it then. Today I might marvel at its accomplishments, but I would not be enthused to peruse it. If I were my teenage self back then, I'd nominate Back To The Future as my favorite film, since it genuinely made me feel joy and fun, and rewarded my moviegoing. The fact that so many Brits---not only Harry---prefer this bleakest of films (ironically directed by an American), show the divide is more than that of an ocean.
