Tractor Talk with Gary

2 жыл бұрын

I show the 2 1958 John Deere 520 tractors that I inherited after the passing of my father in February of 2019. one of them has been a reliable work horse on this farm for nearly 54 years. Still going strong. They are a snappy little tractor that can handle a whole host of tasks that get thrown at them.
Hop up onto the seat and come along for this ride back in time when this old iron ruled the world of the family farm.

You're pronouncing Massey Ferguson all wrong! Haha good video, Gary. Those are very nice units. After being around the 720 on the syrup farm for several years, it's sad to see it retired. I've seen those narrow front end John Deeres do things I would never attempt. Great video!

Nice pair of 620 s there sir . Like you i was raised on my uncles dairy farm . I was operating JD As when i was 7 yrs old . I hrew up using hand clutches . My uncle had a 600 acres dairy farm n we used 2 JD 4020 s n 3 JD As . Yhe hired guy taught me how to back up a 4 wheel jay wagon backwards up the barn bridge to the top of the barn . Our hay eagons vould hold 165 bales loaded with a baler thrower . The one A had a Chelsea power steering but that tractor was usually hooked on the haybine or manure spreader ,so i had to use the yellow sided A to haul wagons back n forth from the fields . Anyways i pulled the wagon straight away from the barn ramp ,then put in reverse n he told me to throttle up the engine m shove that clutch in n use those brakes to whip that front end back n forth while backing the wagon up the hill . I want to tell you it took me quite a cew times umtil i stopped pulling the clutch out n started using those brakes to steer that tractor. I was 12 yrs old n by the endof the summer i could back yhem right into the barn up to the hay elevator on the first try! My uncle n all my cousins were quite impressed that i vould handle that JDA so well around the farm n in tight quarters . I wouldn't trade my childhood to live any other kind of life . My mother s whole gamily were all farmers n worked n lived for weeks at time ony 3 different uncles fatms . They all hadJohm Deere tractors n equipment n dairy farms . It eas greatchildhood filled with manyfond memories of farming n milking cows ,which i hated. 18:06 18:06 18:06

I had a 1953 John Deere 50 that I sold a couple years ago. It was my mainstay. My go to tractor for more than 15 years. After my 94 year old Dad passed away, my wife and I moved back onto the home farm. I had promised her that I would sell off some of the tractors. I sold my 1949 Case SC that my grandpa had bought brand new and my 50 John Deere. I didn’t really want to part with either one of them but they would be the last 2 tractors to be used. Besides, I didn’t have ample shed space and I don’t like my stuff to sit outside. The Case stayed local and sits outside every day. Hasn’t been started in over 2 years. The 50 went to Illinois and became a parade tractor. Both were in really good shape.

Hi Gary. Those are a pair of very nice 520s. As a die hard John Deere guy I have no objections to your reasoning for keeping them around. Probably the biggest reason for John Deere's success was they were the only tractor company that didn't repossess tractors during the Great Depression when farmers struggled to keep their farms going. Deere corporately decided to let farmers keep the tractors if they couldn't keep up with their payments knowing that someday the economy would recover. When it did, Deere had the farmers resume their payments. The old Deeres were great tractors, but so were a good many of the other brands. Deere just went that extra mile for the farmers and the farmers of that generation didn't forget it.

Great video, Gary! Even though I bleed Kubota orange, John Deere holds a special place for me, as that is what my grandfather used on his dairy farm.
