The 4k version of Lawrence of Arabia got released as part of the Columbia Classics set back in 2020, but it got a solo release only a few weeks ago and I was completely blown away. The colors, music, and dolby atmos was top notch.

@P T To be honest, I never had the blu-ray version so I don't know. I only had the DVD copy that came out in 2001 and the VHS copy from the 90's. The 4k version has been completely remastered with Dolby Atmos the color grading is spectacular. The night shots are very clean and you can see everything.

Honestly, I was underwhelmed by it, partly due to the praise it got, and partly due to the fact that the grain at some points, notably on Disc 1, looked fairly noisy at times, and the image correction for scratches and dirt was overly apparent at some points. I don't know if it's because it was a 4K scan not taking advantage of 70mm's 8K-like quality, or if it's me trying to act like I know what I'm talking about, but the image did not live up to my expectations. However, I still liked it. There were, indeed, moments where it did look like what reviewers were describing it as, with some shots, usually mid-close-ups, looking as if they were filmed in the last 20 years.

I collected blu rays for a while until about 5 years ago. I stopped because of the ease and wide availability of streaming options but after recently upgrading TVs for the first time in 6 years I decided to get into 4K Blu Ray collecting. I just ordered a Panasonic DP-UB820 and I’m pretty excited to get started.

I was blown away by how great Shooter looks in 4K. I wasn't expecting it to be earth shattering but good lord, that is a fantastic 4K release. The opening in particular features a sweeping shot over a river and the level of detail on the water was INSANE. Definitely one of my top 4K discs of 2022

Wow, Jeff, I am so glad you made this list. There are a few on the list that I personally don't care for (the movie itself, not the place on the list). But you nailed it with Kino Lorber. I am sooo glad they are taking the time and effort to bring these older movies to 4K. They look and sound great. There are still so many that have never even had a Blu-ray release much less a 4K release. Hoping to see several more titles from Kino Lorber soon. Thanks for making the list and the effort. I always check with you when I need answers about a movie I'm looking for in 4K.

I was surprised after watching Ambulance. Good film, flows well. I'm adding Morbius to my list for home theater dolby atmos sound only. Sony did a great job for the sound on that one.

Kino Lorber has been putting out some quality 4k Blu-Rays lately. I believe you should pick up and watch "In the Heat of the Night" starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. The color and the audio are excellent. Moreover, it includes two other movies in the "Mr. Tibbs" trilogy, 2 audio commentaries, and several featurettes. Even though I had never seen this movie before, it was entertaining and enthralling to watch these famous actors do their most excellent acting and character development. I highly recommend it.

I finally gave in and got a 4k disc player. I have been streaming almost exclusively for years. I have to admit, although streaming video quality is pretty good nowadays, I completely forgot how much better lossless audio is vs the streaming services. I watched Jurassic World this past weekend, and the DTS:X MA track energized my theater room like nothing else to date.

I just bought that light up case that plays sound, because it’s super cool… but I wanted to know if you know how it looks/sounds? Jeff, nice video as usual. I want to pick up Ambulance and The Northman. This black crush issue you speak of when streaming is not such an issue on an OLED. The Batman looks fantastic on HBO Max streaming. Any reason you are not upgrading your set to an OLED? Your jaw will drop on pretty much every movie once you do.

I totally agree with Kino Lorber coming in at 1. They’ve had yet to disappoint me. Literally every release they put out looks and sounds incredible especially Some Like It Hot. Even with it being a black and white film I was blown away by the detail

Agreed Chris, what an amazing year its been for Kino. I don't know what they've done but their transfers are top notch every release. Big 100 GB dics, and bit bit-rates. I just can't say enough good things about them. I'm surprised, even Blue Underground and Arrow cannot keep up in terms of video quality, they're just a step ahead. I;d like to see Blue Underground make a come back, but I just don't think they're progressing like Kino are. They're kinda stagnating, much like Arrow. Anyway, great to see, and what a great year already for 4K.

I only have 3 Kino titles and watched 2 of those. Loved them! Also plan on picking up Ambulance once price comes down. Watched it on streaming and loved it. Northman I need to watch before buying. Godfather and The Batman I could care less about. Not a fan of gangster movies and tried to watch The Batman but gave up as it bored me to death. Was a total waste for me. Thanks again for these videos Jeff! As a person on limited budget and being more selective when it comes to buying, I love these videos to help steer me to a good decision. I just picked up Green Mile & Moonfall on ebay for good deals.

Yeah Jeff, kino lorber's "in the heat of the night" 4k doesn't even have HDR and i was blown away by the color spectrum! I think they sat back and said, "man, if we tamper with the color grading here we will b doing a disservice to the film." Which says to me the 4k transfer kino did was so well done, they simply dropped the mic and walked away.

Kino also did a good job with Touch of Evil and The Apartment 4k (though the Arrow special edition of the latter still wins on packaging and features). I'm waiting on my 4k Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More to arrive still but looking forward to checking those out. I'm yet to get their 4k if Eastern Promises but keen to get that also. Great movie. I will eventually get Northman (brilliant film!) and that lovely Godfather set. Been ages since I've watched the trilogy so am keen to revisit in glorious 4k.

I know Matrix Resurrection came out in 2021, but I don’t think it had a non-streaming 4K release until this year. Was that a consideration? It’s easily my favorite 4K of the year so far. I thought the movie was okay, but the presentation was amazing!

I was shocked The Matrix Resurrections wasn’t on this list. It was a better movie quality-wise than Morbius was, it is part of the definitive demo disc film series, and it was even described as a reference disc by Jeff. Perhaps it will make the top 10 at the end of the year?

I’m not having much luck finding an example of a Kino release where packaging is more than a slip cover. I’ve pretty much ordered only their 3D titles. The transfers (usually by 3D Film Archive) are excellent, but the packaging is minimal. Looking on their site, the Some Like It Hot release seems to only have a slip cover. Arrow and others supply hard boxes with booklets, disk art, along with tons of special features for major releases (eg American Werewolf in London).

Bought Great Escape - only complaint re: boutique labels like Lorber is lake of digital code for stream library. Yeah, yeah I get it- defeats the point of physical media. Just nice to have an online cloud library of films you own on physical media, for convenience/on the road/etc

I couldn't stand the audio in The Batman while streaming on HBO Max. I don't have a high end audio system but it works well for most other movies but the dialog was so low in this movie I kept having to adjust the volume throughout the whole film. Is the 4k blu ray any better?

Credible list. Canon argue with Godfather trilogy. Not seen Northman yet but it is on the way. I agree that KL do great discs and I have the ones on your list. My main issue with KL is how expensive they are to buy from outside the US - arrow have started to release their discs in the US - I wish KL and other us labels like screen factory did the same for territories outside US. My personal favourite recent 4K is another old film - Lawerence of Arabia which has recently got its own standalone release. This film alone justifies buying 4K set up.

Depending on the disc, if you stand within, 1-2 feet of your TV, there’s a chance you’ll see the difference. Unless you do some kind of work that requires standing within inches of your screen (such as film restoration), don’t waste the extra several thousand dollars on an 8K TV.
