same, last year when i went into my backyard shed to grab hay for my goats (dont ask--) and theres a small, well medium plastic bin in there on the floor that was covered in loose hay, when i went to grab a block of hay that was next to the bin and i didnt notice the garter snake in the bin since it was buried under loose hay and because i accidentally scared it, it ended up accidentally scaring me when it moved so quickly, so for that split second i thought it was a copperhead since i find them in my back fields, the snakes in my shed. backyard and back fields should be happy with the mouse supply tho, theres ALOT of mice on my property, so i dont think any of them are under weight, from what ive seen tho, i also wouldnt be surprised if i found baby garters in my shed since its always humid in there

@@Zero_Is_Stopping_Time Would the authorities be able to tell it's a native species if it was a morph? I would think they should be encouraged. A morph means you either got it captive bread, you are breeding them yourself and may be able to help the species, or it's an anomaly and wouldn't have lasted long in the wild anyways. Also unlike non-natives there are no risks if it escapes (to the ecosystem at least; obviously there's usually a reason wild animals are the colors they are and the Animal it's self may not last long).

When purchasing ball pythons, be careful, because balls with a 'spider' gene (the one in the video has the gene in it I think) can have severe neurological issues which causes a head wobble and corkscrewing.

What does that technically mean when owning a snake?
@dragonesseather
@dragonesseather 2 жыл бұрын
@@abeg9959 When owning one with spider gene it means the disorientation can cause it to injure itself. Mostly it's when feeding; the snake will srike at the food, but because of the issues it can miss and strike the ground the walls of its enclosure, or I've even known ne to miss, flip, then bite and coil itself. Luckily it got saved. There are less severe cases, but in some of the worse ones it's absolutely aweful to see them try and scope just to have their head flailing around wildly...

Just be confident and be sure you're ready to house a pet. Think of it like getting a baby: they’re gonna need special food that costs, a lot of attention, health bills take a toll on your wallet even for the regular checkups twice a year, they need a large designated space for living, and they are a long term commitment. Do your research not just to prove yourself to your folks, but because a new life is in your hands.

My corn snake Spot grew from 18 inches to 6 ft in 20 years. He was in a long 90 gal tank and teased my cats. He would weave back and forth while the cats pawed the glass and then move to another side. He had them following him all around the tank for a good hour before going to his hide. He sneezed too. His entire body jumped when he did. Usually after digging through the bedding. He now lives with a herpetologist because l have severe arthritis and could no longer care for him properly. He is still alive after 23 years and healthy.

Big warning about corn snakes: they are master escape artists. Always make sure their tank/tub is secure or they'll find a way out. And they are excellent at hiding. I've had several corn snakes and every single one has escaped at some point. Edit: Still the best beginner snake tho.

For those people who think that snakes are dangerous the answer is no,snakes are actually scared of people and if you find one and run away on the easiest escape route,they might follow you because the snake will also take the easiest escape route,and when they bite is mostly because their scared,so if you find a snake leave it alone :)

So when I was younger I called these "Guarder snakes" cause they were so friendly and I thought they were guarding us/me against mice and their diseases (Bubonic Plague, etc). Actually growing and learning, garter snakes are still one of my favorites and one of the 'sweetest' snakes you can get (Besides Ball Pythons, personal opinion...) or, in other terms, 'friendly'. In your video, you call it 'docile'. Very social species and are so easy to interact with and learn with due to their naturally social nature. (Garter snakes LOVE to be housed together for a reason... if enough space for all of them.....). Honestly, my favorite nonmammalian animal was one of the hardest to be 'close' to and it was an iguana. They are lizard cats... if you can't deal with a cat, don't get an iguana bwahaha.

Ugh, I've always thought that was so stupid! >_< I'm a Christian myself, yet I find that belief stupid and frustrating. First of all, that was ONE snake. One! Not every snake in existence! Secondly, Satan shapeshifted into a snake; he wasn't born one, so does it even count? I am so sorry your dad won't let you get a snake just because some guy shapeshifted into one for evil purposes. My parents are similar in a way: They watch a lot of those courtroom shows like Judge Judy and The People's Court, and a lot of dog attack related cases are about pit bulls. My older brother has been wanting a dog for a while, and the only dogs he seems to form that special connection with (you know, where you see an animal for adoption, and it just kind of clicks, and you know in your heart it's the right pet for you? Yeah, that feeling) are pit bulls. But my parents don't like that because of the stigma. Heck, one time, I told my mom that if she did actual research, she'd see that my brother and I were right, and you know what she said? "I don't want to do research." I said, "Okay, that's not a good attitude to have about ANYTHING." -_- *sigh* So, yeah. My brother can't get a dog partly because of some stigma. Literally the only good reason I can think of for our parents refusing to let us get a pit bull is because some insurance companies (including ours, I think) raise prices if you have a pit bull. But like I said, that's not the only reason they said no. Maybe try telling your dad the points I gave you above? You know, the ones about why associating all snakes with the Devil makes no logical sense? See how it goes? I mean, if you really want a snake, you may as well try, right?

Warning to everyone after seeing the last little clip: very controversial subject but spider morphs are notorious for having neurological issues. it's incredibly rare to find a spider morph fully lacking in neurological issues (and it's genetic so it's not curable like vitamin deficiencies are), if you have a spider, it really just depends on how severe. it can range to a head wobble to full balance issues to coordination issues (the latter can lead to incorrect strikes so they cant get their food and possibly latch to a hand or to themselves), they also might not be able to right themselves when upside down or accidentally drown themselves. You can make the decision on whether or not to buy this morph but it's rarely spoken about by the breeder and can lead to the snake needing to be re-homed if you aren't prepared and the issues get worse. Just make sure you do lots of research into your morphs because some (like the corn morph Emily showed) have some issues to them like bad immune systems, be prone to kinks, have neurological issues, or other health issues.
@lialaokami
@lialaokami 5 жыл бұрын
This is why you should always research a morph or breed of animal, just in general. I plan on getting a corn snake in the future, and I don't have any plans for a morph but if I stumble upon a morph that I decide I'd like, I'll do research on it BEFORE purchasing, just to be sure I don't unintentionally get an animal that has genetic issues, as I'm certain I wouldn't be ready for that quite yet, being as it will be my first snake.

I have heard others call them garden snakes. I've caught many (and released them in under an hour) and never been bitten. I like to look at them, but I wasn't allowed to keep them as a child, and just got in the habit of releasing them before I became an adult. The last one pooped on me; I'd caught it to show it to my son, and it was the first to poop on me and the last I even tried to catch! (laugh, I did, I still do) I remember when I was 10 putting one in a jar to show my brother and sister, but that is the only one I ever put into a container, and it was maybe for 5 minutes max.

I love all snakes! Lizards too. I decided on King Snakes because of the beautiful color combos, very solid size and even though I wasn't ready to buy one, found the most adorable little Florida King. I named him Asterix which is a French name meaning "Little King" and being he's basically a hatchling or just a couple weeks old currently, 10-12" max, he's WAY more chill than any other baby I've ever held. I had to have him. I made room fire him and gave him an awesome enclosure that he uses every inch of. He's a bit shy and nervous but in his first week with me he's already warming up quite a bit. I love him to death! He completely took me and my mother by surprise with how sweet he is!

I have a small budget too, but I have a corn snake and a ball python (and crayfish and a jumping spider). Once you have the setup and supplies, care is pretty affordable. Food is the most frequent routine expense. I typically spend $38.16 on food per month (for the snakes only, not including the other pets I mentioned).

2:48: I used to go out and catch (and release) garter snakes a bunch as a kid. got musked on a lot lol, though only bit enough to break skin the once. there was a pair of them one time, one got trapped beneath a trashcan wheel and injured its tail, and the other stayed with it; they ended up as classroom pets.

I’ve never had a snake, but I’ve always loved garters! Ever since I was a kid I’ve loved looking at them and watching videos of them! If I ever get a snake, I think it would need to be a garter.

I found a snake shed in my garage. It was a small shed but it was still really cool. I have never seen a snake in real, life except for the tail of one on the side of the road. I live in Southern Maine so I will have to seach up what species it could be.

Very helpful! I’ve seen corn snakes recommend on every list I’ve found, so they’re definitely at the top of my list! My daughter and I got to handle some snakes at a reptile show that came to our library and she really wants her own pet now. I’ve wanted a snake since I was a kid, so now we’re trying to find out which snake would be the best fit. Thanks for the information!

I had a corn snake when I was younger, we saved it from my neighbors shovel in their garage. They had mice in their garage too so I wasn’t surprised it was in there. I also wouldn’t be surprised if somebody had let it go when it was their pet because of how docile it was.
