Winter can be a difficult season for hikers to motivate themselves to get out on the trails. Cold weather, trail and road closures, post-holing through multiple feet of snow, and avalanche danger can make it seem impossible to get out for a winter hike. But not anymore!
We're sharing our top 5 winter hikes in California so that the next time you're itching to get out on the trail, you know where to go!
We've definitely had our fair share of winter hiking adventures and through trial and error and tons of research we've been able to find some of the most epic winter hikes that should be accessible for most fairly experienced hikers without tons of mountaineering training. From Yosemite to Sequoia National Parks and beyond, we've got you covered!
So this winter, instead of cozying up with that fifth cup of egg nog, join us out on the beautiful winter hiking trails of California!
DISCLAIMER: While we specifically chose these trails due to a relatively low avalanche risk and limited requirements for mountaineering training, there is always inherit risk assumed with any hike. That is especially true if hiking during the winter. Always make sure to bring proper safety equipment, navigation and emergency devices, and be prepared for severe conditions. As always, hike at your own risk :)

NICE! I finally just shared your channel to a few friends. Funny, my co-worker gifts this year was the “get outside in the winter” theme complete with tips, a winter headband and a mini Fireball. This was because I was feeling the winter blues, so decided it’s time to embrace it and get out there. Not quite what you do, but just purchased new snow tires and am getting my winter gear together. If you can’t beat Winter, participate. Your video was good timing. It just cemented my goal. Thanks!

Kristy we're so freaking happy to hear that! It can def be hard to motivate in the winter, but your attitude is exactly right -- once you start embracing it and getting out into it, you actually begin to look forward to it! We now like winter hiking just as much as summer hiking, and are really looking forward to some January and February adventures. Can't wait to hear where you go adventuring with the new snow tires!! ❤️

Thanks Cheryl! Yes Cactus to Clouds is always better NOT in summer season. Although you have to be careful in winter because even though the valley temps are perfect, the snow and ice near the summit of Jacinto can get pretty dangerous and usually requires mountaineering experience. The rangers often close a certain portion of the trail during winter months as well to protect people when the risk level is too high. But spring would be great for that one!

Earthquakes, blizzards and deep snow oh no! Most people would give up in the first mile but for Abominable Adam and Elite Elise it's just another walk in the park.Twice the energy needed to do the same hike in deep snow especially picking your feet up with snowshoes. We always worry about steping thru holes betwen the rocks on those deep snowy adventures without them.. We are getting cabin fever and want to get ot there in the snow. Any reccomendations of your favorite snowshoes? The artic blast came thru last night. It's a balmy 9 degrees here today. Been watching You Tube alot today dreaming about sunny places.. I wholeheartedly agree! I haven't been to Anza-Borrego, but the rest are almost better as winter hikes than summer just to get to experience them in solitude! Eagle Peak is also a gorgeous view of the valley and very peaceful once you split off from Yosemite Falls Trail. I've been thinking about the Pohono from Tunnel View whenever we finally get a weekend of clear weather (I'm not mad about the snow, though!). 😉 I do have a question - what boots do you guys use for snow hikes? Happy New Year and here's to more adventures! 🎉

OMG Teddie we're having the same mixed feelings about the storms -- we're glad because it's good for California, but are going totally stir crazy because every weekend lately our plans get canceled by another crazy blizzard! We've just been using our regular Salomon X-Ultras with gaiters for the snow. That generally works great -- good gaiters are essential! -- but after a full day in snow the water does seep through the toes a little so on overnights they can freeze. If we start doing more multi-day snow trips we will prob need to invest in fully waterproof snow boots. ❤️
@6MTGirl
@6MTGirl Жыл бұрын
@@LiveHardxLoveHard thank you for the rec love! I do need winter boots after spending all of last winter in GTX Salomon trail runners with just snow gaiters and being so cold I thought I was going to lose a toe more than once. 🙈😅 I know you guys love your X Ultra 3s and it's good to know they work okay enough for winter! Not a ton of sizes left, but I ordered a pair to try. The new 4s have pretty thin outsoles which wouldn't be ideal for rocky trails and I know the 3s were sturdier in that respect. I tried a few others like the Oboz Bridger, Keen Revel, Sportiva Nucleo and they're either too wide/high volume for me or caused blisters and hot spots. Back to Salomon it is - I can pretty much only wear narrow Salomons and Sportivas. And hoping for a clear weather window this weekend! I too have been going stir-crazy the past month or so. How is your back feeling? ❤️

@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 9 ай бұрын
Thanks Heather! It depends on the hike, but yes in Yosemite we will often car-camp just outside the park and then drive in first thing in the morning. If we're there for multiple days, we'll probably try to find a cheap motel within an hour or two of the park in order to get a good sleep between hikes -- or, of course, just bring the tent and camp along the hike during winter when it's easy to get a camping permit! ❤️

I love your videos.. I like your humor about self abuse (in a serious way), refreshing. Watching you do your thing has led me to watch other peoples hiking/climbing videos. I've learned I can't watch serious climbing videos, they make me too nervous.. so hike around but don't climb things like the Fisher/mystery towers although it prolly has a world class snack spot or two ;)

Elise and Adam, a good morning from France. Beautiful retrospective of your winter adventures, despite the great difficulties you master the cold and the snow, the Yeti (the abominable snowman) can tremble in front of your winter hikes, he would not do better. Thank you for these beautiful images and this beautiful montage of circumstance and end of year. Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year. Kisses to both of you. Absolutely, Paul! Badger Pass to Taft is a classic ski route that would be amazing, and people definitely ski the Sequoia Lakes area as well. The others have too much you'd need to hike, so you'd be carrying skis more than walking, but those two are totally do-able. Merry Christmas! ❤️

Yosemite. The trail between Illouette Falls and Nevada Falls (Panoramic Trail) is a haul in snow. BUT probably easier than trying road to Glacier/from parking or Ski area. 4 mile trail is probably closed or posted as dangerous. Vernal Falls trail is giant ice cube from mist. If cold. The high trail has rock ice fall. So "middle " is it up to Nevada Falls is the and traditional route up. (Lyle/Lyell) is out through little Yo valley. To go to Tuolumne Meadows most go up from Valley. North side across from half dome. Tough. long. Take compass and map if not good at this stuff. You can go across Clouds rest BUT you may be walking sideways in wind looking down 6000 feet into Tenaya Canyon on the narrow part. Standing on snow cornice of death. Way easier from Lee Vining side. The overlook at the top of the hill after Illouette falls Is the spot. Personally my favorite Yosemite hike is Glacier to Clouds rest. Reverse back down you do Halfdome. Or on way up.

Then drive back to Moab. Zion/Toroweap, Vegas. Death Valley. Lone Pine. Yosemite. Lassen. Crater Lake. Eugene. Florence. Salem. Hood cross river to Randle. Rainier. Home. Repeat. Reload. Repeat.......add Yellowstone. Obviously starting point is in west. I lived/worked in CO UT WY CA. WA now. Live ❤️ love knows Washington too. It is epic here in summer. Winter nope. Skiing. Do one the Trifecta Baldwin hill. Santa Monica to Venice and back. Vasquez rocks after brunch at Getty. I did Hollywood Hills but the dog sht smell and parking up behind Hollywood BLVD was too much and the crowd was crazy. So no thanks on that one again. Griffith is insane also on weekends but did do it once. There is Olivera to Japanese tea to Chinese to Disney to the aqueduct to Getty Mansion to Pinks to pier burger. That's not walking though. What are the access roads and parking like for these hikes in the winter? Being from out of state, I always want to travel to CA in the offseason to avoid crowds and wildfires, but the thing that always turns me away is inaccessible roads and the tire chain rules for rental cars.
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard Жыл бұрын
This is a fascinating question -- we didn't know there were rules about chains on rental cars! Depending on conditions, they can definitely have chain or snow tire requirements in both Yosemite and Sequoia. What about renting a 4WD Jeep rather than a typical rental car? That should solve the problem. Big knobby tires and 4WD can handle pretty much anything. ❤️

Winter takes a road. And often it's a 5 mile hike up said road before you get to TH. In the snow. So now Kearsarge is 21 miles not 10-12. Whitney is actually the shortest. BUT FOR MY HUMBLE INPUT Whitney is all around best. Easiest. Closest to LA. You can go up Carillion or Lone Pine Creek also. Or to Lone Pine Peak. Carillion up and right to top is gorgeous in winter. Good view overlooking iceberg lake. Hard hike though. Sequoia big tree next up the I 5. Lemon Cove entrance. #1 Sequoia in deep snow. They plow. Pull into first parking lot. Done and if you crampon it got Moro Rock too. #1 Yosemite. You are liberally in the valley with all kinds of options. Get out da car gawk. BUT Captain Obvious. Go up Nevada Falls low trail. CRAMPONS!!!!!! Then up to the last tree on first hump of halfdome. You can go to cables also. Gawk. Epic view. In trees deep snow go up until it is flat turn left. Trail is obscured. Winds up. May be Ranger ski tracks or not. #1 Kearsarge. #1 Kearsarge. You don't have to go to the pass. If real snow you won't even see the cliff switchbacks and first 6 foot 4 inch sign will be buried. #2 Moab La Sal. Gold Basin. Go to Basin. Aka giant bowl. Turn left up creek follow it to top walk ridge. The end of road is 10000+ you can get to the big parking lot through aspens. BEWARE OF AVALANCHE CONDITIONS! #2 LASSEN VNP. If you can get to it it has the most snow in California but sad cousin. To East Sierras. Yosemite is king but I like Big Pine Creek and Palisades. Hard approach in winter. But you follow the creek. Duh. Still hard if newbie. Navigating through trees etc.

@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard Жыл бұрын
Really any hike is worth doing when you're first starting out -- just getting outdoors and working those balance and uphill muscles is what matters in the beginning. Assuming you're in good shape and want something tough, anything in the 5-10 mile range with about 3000-4000 feet of elevation gain would be a good first time challenge. In the Southern California area, Mt Baldy is many people's first serious climb. It's tough but do-able, and you'll feel fantastic at the top! ❤️

If it is SOCAL. Watch their videos. I now bow to their coverage. Places been. Grudgingly. They are SOCAL 🤴 👑 Royalty. Sierras are best USA offers year round access. Yellowstone ploughs from Mammoth to Cooke City. So you can walk anything off road on that 80 mile stretch. Might freeze to death but hey it is snow. I like Moab best in winter. 5 peaks over 12k! And Henry's if that ain't enough. Road from Zion to Bryce to Hankville over the pass is great, drive through capital reef also. I hit I70 go in from north. Skip Blanding.

Hi- I think pop tarts taste better in the winter cold. Do you agree?
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard Жыл бұрын
Haha. Well I personally feel conflicted about this statement. On the one hand, I prefer the warm pop tart because I like the filling to be more gooey. But on the other hand, the cold weather always makes me hungrier while hiking (it's like your body is trying to build a layer of poptart adipose tissue to warm you up). So it could really be a toss up here. We'll have to consult the expert Adam and get back to you....😂 -E
