We caught up with Todd Rogers from Four Points Adventures at Tepuifest to learn about the top five most important things to have on hand in your overland vehicle, from self-rescue tools and spare parts to general maintenance gear.
The first “essential” isn’t so much an item, but a general reminder: always make sure your vehicle is in good working order before setting out on an overland trip. Stay current with maintenance and regularly inspect your vehicle for any signs of damage or wear. Rogers also recommends some important recovery tools, including a good quality recovery strap with a couple of shackles rated at or above your vehicle weight, plus durable sand tracks in case you get stuck in muddy terrain. Finally, make sure to invest in a Hi-Lift Jack, a shovel, and a fully-stocked tool kit.

An air compressor is handy for sure but not mandatory as most places don't require airing down to more than 20 and so long as you don't drive fast (tires overheat) you can get to a fill up station after you get unstuck. A gauge should always be kept in the glove box, even in your town car. Tire plugs only work on very limited tire punctures, most of the tire problems I've seen are sidewall tears which can't be fixed with a plug. Like I said on the video, there are a ton of things you can buy before going overlanding, but the things I suggested will help you get out of many recovery situations. Of course water, 1st Aid, sleeping bag, etc are good to have but those things should be in any vehicle going on a long trip.

you mentioned a shovel, I have found that a garden hoe is so much easier to use in a lot of stucks. instead of digging, you rake the mud and sand away twice as fast.

I think that's a good idea too but I find that a medium sized shovel works better in more situations and moves more muck, sand, and snow per scoop.

First Aid kit,like has already been mentioned,a midsized ax,a place to sleep,and food. Is probably what I would add.

An axe will do more harm than good unless you know what you’re doing with it already, take a saw, and I still don’t think those are in the top 5 things.

Right, and first aid training too:) How about going with a minimum of two vehicles? Could be a good thing if you've learning anything new from this particular video. Perhaps, if the sun sets that day, unexpectedly of course, a headlamp and spare batteries? A paper map? A compass? Some matches or a lighter? A knife? Jumper cables? Garbage bags so as to "Leave No Trace". A wide base for your conventional tire jack so it doesn't sink into the dirt. If you have a pickup, check the condition of the spare tire, sometimes they even get stolen and the owner doesn't notice for months! At least a hundred dollars in cash for emergencies. Some extra water, if for nothing else, to share with those less prepared? A sleeping bag if you're not planning needing it, just in case? Spare fluids are at least as important as spare belt. Belts have a life of 50-100k. If a qualified mechanic has checked it out there's little chance it will fail on a short trip for example. Toilette paper? Someone in the group might not be on your schedule. I dislike rubbing unadulterated plants on my butt and stones aren't much better!

Having many years in Mtn. Search and Rescue I can safely say that the best thing to have in your medical bag is not a band aid but the skill to use it. I would recommend that folks take a first aid/cpr course before going overlanding but this was not the question I was asked, it was regarding recovery of your vehicle.

What is this "tire lift" tool he references? Unfortunately my 4x4 Tacoma doesn't have a rear locker and I don't want to pay $2,000 for an ARB set up, is this some type of, "in a pinch" substitute??
@fourpointsadventures
@fourpointsadventures 6 жыл бұрын
The tool I referred to is the High Light jack, it's actually a very old jack that farmers used to lift or drag their tractors out of the mud or to change tires but it works great for our off road applications as well. Lockers are nice but it's best to learn how to drive without them first (I did for many years) because they can get you into trouble and then break if your not careful.

Water, YES for sure, at least 1 gallon per day per person, but as I've mentioned in earlier comments, I was asked specifically about vehicle recovery gear and of course there are many more than 5 but the 5 I mention are the most useful.

Agreed Dean, St. Pierre is "legit", however he probably has time to prepare for his videos, I was asked to do this after I'd been working an off road event for 2 days and was given about 5 minutes to prepare for a talk about vehicle recovery gear.

Highlift is the last thing you should put in your vehicle for overlanding, it is dangerous and COMPLETELY USELESS for just about every vehicle thats getting into overlanding. More appropriate tool would be a jack that can raise your vehicle. Water is by far more important that the highlift.

Lol off-roading and overlanding are different in the absence that you drive your overland rig to the trail and usually someone’s daily off-road vehicles are usually trailered to the trail.
