In Zwickau they made a fine Horch after that (P240) but these cars were more expensive than a soviet Tschaika V8 so the Soviets stopped the production and ordered the east Germans to manufacture cheap Trabants there: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mselYMJms-DGiKs.html

Although Stoewer and NSU were founded as manufacturers of sewing machines and the like in 1858 and 1873 respectively, to say that the car companies were founded then is nonsense. The first Stoewer car was made 41 years after the company was founded and the first NSU car was made 32 years after that company was founded.

Borgward & Lloyd I seem to recall were actually two divisions of the same company. Still a few on the road when I was posted there. I recall hearing that the early Lloyds were nicknamed the 'Leukoplast Bomber' (Band Aid Bomber) because the bodies were made of formed pressed plywood covered in Patent Leather(?). And the later Arabella some called the 'Aquabella' because they had an issue with blowing head gaskets?

@@knut-hinrichqwalter2463 Ford owned Aston Martin, so the DBS, DB11, etc are just a Fiesta?!! No Astons are built by Aston Martin. Maybachs are produced the way the were before they went under and then resurrected by Mercedes. Not that having Mercedes attached to your badge demeans it in any way, that would just be a ridiculous level of snobbery.

"Audi" is latin and means "listen", same word as "Horch" that is old german language, so "Audi" was another word and brand for "Horch" automobiles, today Horch is related to Nazi cruelty so the VW corporation that holds most Audi and Porsche shares only use the Audi brand that never appeared in Nazi garages (other than Wanderer brand that made Wehrmacht cars too)

MAYBACH, is not defunct, it was bought by Mercedes Benz, who still produce MAYBACH Cars. HORCH and WANDERER merged with DKW and AUDI, to form AUTO UNION, but the name was later changed to Audi by VW, which means HORCH, WANDERER and AUTO UNION are not really defunct. NSU was bought by VW, so by rights NSU isn’t defunct ether.

Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer got together in 1932 to form Auto Union. By the way, when August Horch sold his original car company he agreed not to go back into business under his own surname: so when he did, he translated it into Latin as Audi (= "listen!"). NSU also joined the Auto Union before they reverted to "Audi."

This is "badge engineering" as practiced by Detroit and BMC, among others. The most expensive Mercedes-Benz is called a "Maybach." Volkswagen bought the Rolls-Royce car company, but not the name, and now makes Bentley cars in the UK, while BMW bought the Rolls-Royce name (only) from the aero engine company and makes Rolls-Royce cars in the UK.
