Welcome to our latest video featuring one of my favorite baby items: the topponcino! In it, I show you the homemade topponcino that I used for my 3 children, as well as one from The Topponcino Company. I also speculate about its possible eastern origins.
Buy a topponcino here: topponcinocompany.com?aff=50
Summary:
- The topponcino is an infant support pillow used during the first 8-12 weeks of life.
- It supports the fragile head, neck and body of the newborn during holding and carrying.
- It provide a sense of warmth, comfort, and familiar smells that make the baby feel safe, acting as a security object for infants.
- Its constant presence can be part of building a network of secure attachments; securely attached babies are more likely to feel comfortable exploring unfamiliar environments.
- It’s “Montessori” because it respects the child’s need to feel safe and secure, and helps baby to feel comfortable in its environment. It eliminates/reduces the need to place babies in bouncers and swings, which constrain movement.

I was thinking about making this with neutral colors, because Montessori prefers neutral color for babies. But hearing from you that the origin of topponcino is from India where they use colorful fabric, I think I will incorporate my culture's fabric and motives! Because here, we have tradition to use a certain cultural fabric while carrying the baby and it has a lot of color and design ☺️ Thank you!

i'm not a mom yet and i'm not pregnant. i feel the obligation from nowon to know about parenting. i've just started a new online course from a college in Alberta and i live in an african country. i do love and admire what i'm learning everyday about that montessori phylosophy! thank you for your explanation :)

I'm a FTM with an 11 week old. I intended to use the Toppochino more often but for whatever reason I didn't grab for it that much. The learning curve is so high with a newborn and while in survival mode, I only grabbed things I felt like I needed. I think being cooped up with Covid made a difference because I wasn't introducing him to many people. That and diaper blowouts, haha! I will keep it for my next baby and hope to get more use out of it. Thank you for posting the tutorial to DIY this, I think the $70 price tag is too high!

I've ordered a beautiful organic one from a French seller on etsy. I'm really excited to get it and plan on sewing my own cover for it. Just need to decide which fabric to choose! Just wish I'd known about it when my first child was a baby. Such is life.

i have seen a similar one on etsy that is supposed to be filled with merino wool. Was yours the same? How did you like it and wash it?

I didn’t know much about Montessori for babies until after my own children were grown, but I love the idea of creating a cozy nest for baby that is consistent. Did you have issues with needing to wash it frequently because of spit up?

I didn't have too big of an issue with spit up soaking through to the inner pad. I usually just rotated the cover every 2 weeks or so or whenever it was needed. We had more of an issue with diaper leaks than anything else!

Hi, can a baby sleep on toppocino? Or this is only used when the child is not sleeping?

How long did you use it for? We loved ours, we took it to the hospital and used it in the NICU and then at home for 8 weeks

Same with us - I felt like we decreased its use around 8 weeks and phased it out of regular use around 12 weeks. We still use it as a "sitting cushion" when baby is on the wood floor but not frequently. So great you got to use yours straight from birth.
