It depends, it unfortunately, by its very nature, gives you influence. If they're willing to implement a policy that would benefit your pre-existing investments massively, then the donation is yet another form of investment. Given that many of the Conservatives are of old money, this may happen in the UK a lot more than the average Brit would be happy to admit. I mean, that PPE money isn't going to print itself, unless you live at number 10 or 11.

“The Tories money comes from wealthy backers” I am shocked. When I looked at their track record I thought they were for the poor and the workers and public services…let’s look at that record. They introduced the bedroom tax, making thousands of not millions poorer and forcing them out of their homes. Deported black British pensioners and pretended they weren’t citizens to appeal to xenophobes. Reduced the bands on tax credits creating a benefit cliff-edge for support and pushing the vulnerable to poverty. Cut police jobs by around 40,000 (over 20,000 officers and slightly less for support staff) Cut council funding pushing some councils near bankruptcy. Oversaw Royal Mail privatisation, the same privatised Royal Mail that’s so much better according to their managers they’re losing a million pounds a day (guess that £400 million to shareholders was a bad idea) Decimated widows benefit (who gives a shit about widows with kids) Reduced Disability Benefits (and was famously challenged over this during the 2017 election) Added a sadistic 5 week waiting period on universal credit. Only covered 2 children with universal credit pushing more children into poverty Started the ideological stupidity of pursuing the most damaging Brexit imaginable then still claim it’s not done. Had their own social mobility board resign en masse as they were doing nothing to aid social mobility. Failed to tackle the ongoing housing crisis. Failed to tackle inequality. Blamed the young for their being “too many”, yes, “TOO MANY” Foodbanks (oh yeah, cause before 2010 young people…didn’t exist) Oversaw a reduction in life expectancy Allowed shit to be dumped in our rivers and seas. Produced a bill to force workers to work at risk of sacking or suing. Produced a bill to (effectively) ban peaceful protests. Produced a bill that makes whistle-blowing harder as journalists can be jailed for reporting. Effectively ban experts who openly disagree with them from advising government, even if they are the best in their field. Said the poor shouldn’t get coffees from a cafe. Said the poor shouldn’t buy name-brand food. Said the poor should get rid of Netflix. Said the poor should exist on meals that cost no more than 30p Had a go at civil servants for being snowflakes who were (allegedly) bullied by Dominic Raab. A chancellor who avoided tax and another whose tax affairs were questionable. A PM who broke parliamentary standards so changed the rules as he was never going to change himself. They have ALWAYS been out for the wealthy but previously tossed more crumbs to make sure the poorest could survive at least. Now they’re not even doing that as they run the country into the ground. We need more Labour, more Lib Dem’s and more Greens and less blues in parliament. Hopefully some form of PR and votes for 16 year olds will help achieve this.

@@colinwishbone4437Plenty of examples of their incompetence, as the Tories have borrowed more and paid back less than Labour since the second world war. 7 June 23 the public accounts committee reported that waste and fraud from government departments was £5.5 billion over 2 years prior to Johnson and Sunak (as chancellor) then almost quadrupled to £21 billion in the most recent 2 years. No attempt to recover fraudulent bounce back loans being a classic example. Spaffing: 3 barges - two can't dock, and the one in dock failing fire and safety standards. £8.7b on useless PPE; £37b on a non-existent test and trace system. Just three examples from a long list

They should be publicly funded. People always want to pay them a pittance in terms of salary and don't want to publicly fund elections. Those are false economies, it's like buying a cheap printer and getting bilked for ink. If taxpayers don't pay then the rich donors do and get control. Yay we saved the relatively small amount on election campaign funding and then billions of our money get redirected to their donors. Singapore pays their MPs well and corruption is low. The deal is they get good pay and are subject to very stringent anti corruption rules.

To all those people saying we’re poor and we can’t afford anything I would say this… So with yet more news about the greed of bosses I thought I’d give my take on the reality of pay in the U.K. here it is… Last year, after nine years working for BT I left. It also marked the first time in my life I have ever been on strike. You see the BT management during the usual round of pay talks indicated that, during a cost of living (cost of greed) crisis there was just no money for the workers. They were flat broke for workers’ pay. I’m completely unrelated news the had also paid out £700 million to shareholders. £700 million. £700,000,000 I went in one day when others were on strike and the disdain I witnessed from some of the managers was absolutely disgusting. If the workers and union members had been there they’d have probably organised a mass walkout till BT apologised. It was disgusting, especially when you remember how the workers kept working during Covid when they could, with others working from home. This year some of those loyal workers were advised they’d be replaced by AI chatbots. Good luck with that. After all, it worked so well with outsourcing customer services roles didn’t it? The truth is the money is there. Royal Mail also tried this shit with their staff after paying out £400 million in share dividends, with fears they could declare the letters part of the business bankrupt to just keep the money making parcels bit. Making hundreds of millions in profit simply not being enough for them. The money is there. Over the last few years the Tories have wasted so much money it’s ridiculous. the Tories have spent £480,000,000 on the French. £29,000,000,000 track and trace. £15,000,000,000 PPE written off £17,000,000,000 bounce-back loans written off. Between £30,000,000,000 and £50,000,000,000 on the disastrous mini budget giving money to the rich before no doubt cutting it for everyone else. A mere £11,000,000 on trying to develop our own Covid app when one already existed. Between £12,000,000,000 and £20,000,000,000 to fraud via Universal Credit when previously Tax Credits were extremely robust when it comes to fraud. £222,000 for Boris Johnson’s legal fees. £140,000,000 for Rwanda scheme which has sent NO refugees. £33,000,000 for Eurostar over the ferries debacle £340,000 to settle Priti Patel’s bullying case. £655,000,000 lost to a conman due to council cuts and restrictions lifted on what councils can spend £102,000,000,000 for a vastly reduced HS2 And Christ knows how much it cost for the plague barge the Pippy Stockholm-Syndrome. The money is there. What is happening is the establishment since 2008 has closed ranks, shutting people at the bottom out as they funnel ever more money to the top whilst feeding crumbs to the masses, all the while telling us we’re wasting money whilst they piss it away with crypto scams, banking failures and stock disasters like the GameStop/AMC debacle as they try to destroy good businesses whilst funding fraudulent and dodgy ones like Wirecard, FTX, Nikolai Trucks, Celsius (whom I believe has now been charged and is no longer alleged) Greensill Capital. The money is there, these greedy slime just don’t want ordinary people to have it.

Think of those 2018 senate races where some democrat challengers raised obscene amounts of money only to do marginally better than other cycles. Money is vital but after a certain point it caps out. Voters are not complete idiots. They can choose who to vote for. They can be influenced to a degree. If the people united and sustained pressure for x change they'd probably eventually get something.

Kaned is right. The UK's electoral system shares that flaw with the US: A vote for a candidate who has no realistic prospect of winning is as good as a vote not made at all. It forces people to vote for the 'lesser evil' and ensures smaller parties will forever remain small. That means if you want to keep the Tories out, the only plausible way is to vote for whichever non-Tory party has the best chance in your constituency. That's usually Labour, though not always.
@TheCuggsmeister
@TheCuggsmeister Жыл бұрын
@vylbird8014 Yes, I do realise that but if everyone concedes to the same mentality, nothing is ever going to change. I'm 56. Been voting ever since I was legally entitled to do so. I've seen both Labour and Conservative governments come and go and I can honestly say that my life has not improved in any significant way regardless of who has the keys to number 10. I'm at the point where I'm so disheartened and apathetic about it all that just the act of voting at all seems a fruitless exercise. But rather than just not bothering, I've decided from now on to vote for the Greens or independents. I know the majority of people will probably agree with you that it's a wasted vote but if we want an actual change I feel we should go with our hearts rather than forever going through the same Conservative/Labour see-sawing.

@@throwawaythrowaway9764 There are limits to what even a government with a substantial majority can do before causing consequences they cannot weather. Suspending an election indefinitely is past those limits. They will certainly postpone as long as they are able, in the hope that the public will forget about their scandals of recent years, but (baring a sudden outbreak of war) that's as far as they can go.

Donors, whether large or small, tend not to back losers or those who are widely perceived to be heading for a loss and it's difficult to imagine any scenario where the Tories would do anything but lose; likely quite badly, next time out. Those with the means to support certain parties or candidates are keeping it stashed away for a time when they are more competitive. No sense pissing it away on a lost cause.

Somewhat ironic the Party that claims to be best for the economy and are the most fiscally responsible seem to regularly run at a loss. This is not the first time in recent years that the Tories have been close to bankruptcy but this time they don't have the Russians to help bail them out. You have to ask the question that if the members of the Tory party choose their leader and ultimately the Prime Minister just why are their membership numbers clouded in mystery? Just how many foreign nationals do they have as members, foreign nationals who are not eligible to vote in UK elections but are able to have a vote in who the Prime Minister might be.

"Undermining his credentials as a competent legislator." I'd like you to be able to support that assertion with some evidence. As chancellor, he neglected to do his job losing millions of pounds, threw money at PPE frauds, had money falsely taken in job support during covid, and printed lots of money helping fuel inflation. All of which he can't be arsed to get back. Just what exactly did he do that was competent? Was it has impressive arrogance and lies at PMQs? Was it his 'turning back the boats' ...? Reinstating Braverman? Breaking the law, being unlawful, or simply turning a blind eye towards corruption - including his own. I can't see anything competent as a legislator.
