You know what's also coincidental? A few months ago, a tornado caused damage to the Wright-Patterson Airforce Base and the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

I grew up in the 80s, and I remember the state of tornado forecasting at the time. The average lead time for a tornado warning was about -7 minutes. Yes, that's *negative* 7 minutes, the tornado was usually on the ground seven minutes BEFORE the warning was issued. When NEXRAD arrived, the average lead time jumped to *plus* 10 minutes. Yeah. Before NEXRAD, the standard joke was that the tornado warning was best used to confirm that, yes, that WAS a tornado that just flattened your house...

Another tornado you might want to consider covering is the Plainfield, Illinois F5, which was completely unwarned.

Or the Fergus Falls tornado. Possibly the worst tornado to ever affect the railway.

You should also do a tornado video on the Greensburg, KS twister, which was the first to get the official EF5 rating.

I hid under an overpass once in Texas. I parked my tractor trailer as safely as possible and buried myself as tightly as I could. After everything was over, I crawled out from underneath the bridge and began walking back to my truck. It only suffered a cracked windscreen and a missing passenger side mirror. A State Trooper pulled up to check on me, and I told him I was alright. He asked me where I hid during the storm and I told him under the bridge. He flipped out and said, “Dude, you could have been killed! Don’t do that!”

What is the recommended action if one's caught in open territory? I seem to recall sheltering in a ditch as a suggestion but I'm unclear on the details (or if doing that's even recommended).

@@jonfromstearns Do you know if lying down or kneeling/curling up is recommended? (I know that for lightning the recommendation is to kneel and curl up, kind of like if you're praying towards Mecca, ideally on an insulated pad. The idea is that in the case of lightning strike the electricity is less likely to flow through critical parts of ones body.)

4:46 I love the original Twister movie and I am going to see the sequel to it! But, Yea.. I don’t care if you *THINK* you can survive a tornado like this. If you see something like this coming, *GET THE HELL OUT THERE!* Don’t try and be foolish, that’s how you get killed by something like this. Now, granted, I will give them credit for thinking they could endure something like that, but if it comes down to it, and it’s your life *AND* your property on the line, you always rebuild, but a life? That’s forever. Because chases are that if you don’t get picked up by the tornado, falling debris, or something else will get you. If you can run, by all means, *RUN* and get to safety.
