The Torpedo Rig: Two Fishing Rigs in One

This video shows how to make the torpedo rig and covers all the terminal tackle components needed. I go through each step needed to tie the rig. The torpedo rig is a new rig that I designed for plaice fishing. It is based on a bomber rig, but can be converted into a loop rig on-the-fly. This 'how to' video starts by showing the rig in action down the beach, the goes on to demonstrate how to make it.
I think the torpedo rig will be ideal for fishing at distance. Mostly I will use it for plaice, but with stronger snoods or bigger hooks it will work well for a variety of larger species. I hope it catches you lots of fish.

Sorry, I haven't got one here. I'll try to remember to include one in the next session I film where I use the rig, so keep any eye out for it. I've got a new video going up tonight (06/02/24) where I use the rig, but filmed before I saw your comment.

@@ClickBaitGem I think I have it pictured in my mind now. The foundation is an up-and-over rig, but with a rig clip on the trace. A second trace at the top of the rig clips into the clip on the lower trace. The lower trace is clipped behind the lead as per usual, clipping in the upper trace provides the tension in the first. Any slack in the lower trace is above the clip which allows for a bit of adjustment for tension.

Looks exactly the same as a loop rig or Portsmouth rig.
@ClickBaitGem
@ClickBaitGem 4 ай бұрын
Yes - you can convert it to a loop rig by sliding the lower snood swivel down the rig body, so it fishes one up, one down. What I think of as the standard configuration for the rig is two above the lead, with it being a variation of the bomber rig.

Interesting new rig and will give ago. One point , you mentioned “half a spring is enough”. What benefit is this? And how do you cut, line cutters or..?
@ClickBaitGem
@ClickBaitGem 4 ай бұрын
Sorry for the slow reply to your question. Yes, I cut my springs in half with wire cutters. The benefit, well you get twice as many springs for your money. Plus I think it looks neater and any saving (no matter how tiny) on drag through the air when casting can't be a bad thing. Whether it does impact casting distance to any extent I have no idea!

Hi Gem. Great rig, would you consider using Breakaway’s ‘adjustable crimps’ instead of the gum stop knots? They’re not very pretty but much quicker to use.
@ClickBaitGem
@ClickBaitGem 4 ай бұрын
Sorry for the slow reply to your question. Honestly, no I wouldn't use those. They are quiet expensive (about 9p each) and I worked out my rig gum stops cost less than 1.5p each to tie. For a three hook rig, that works out about 45p more per rig. When you fish a lot, and use a lot of rigs, that's a massive price difference.

That’s how I get my viewing figures up 😂. In seriousness though, it’s super hard to find a good background for showing off how to make rigs. I hope you managed to follow it ok in the end.

@@ClickBaitGem well gave 2 torpedo rigs a try today. Strong wind off the sea but the rigs fly. Only one whiting but think that was down to the bait. Certainly no issue with the rig. Also an added bonus, having the quick link means when you get home and wash the rig, you can unclip the bottom hook and it makes untangling the remaining snood and rig body a breeze. Thanks again.

Glad you’re happy with the rig! Good point about cleaning and untangling back home - I hadn’t thought of that one 😃
