Hannah I have a compliment for you. The other night I was watching Jamie Paige’s new video. In it, she remarked how much she loves the new Merit blush in Terracotta and how it reminds her of the Patrick Ta “She’s So L.A..”. In my life prior to you, that would have prompted me to buy it because I love the PatrickTa blush. I mean, if I love one, of course I would love the other just as much, right? Since your wise ways have smartened me up, I now stop and think... if I have something similar, why would I need this? I have been making better buying decisions and both my wallet and I thank you ❤️

This is such a good concept and really does get me thinking in a different perspective. Having spent more and more time over covid inside taking in influencer content, it's so easy to forget that the people you watch don't have the same monetary ties to everything they use. In so many ways even the most well meaning content creator can become a big ad space and normalize having perhaps an excess of duplicates of products that do similar if not the same thing. Also makes me wonder about previous generations before social media was big. Do more people today push the size of their makeup collections? With influencers, more people than ever are definitely sharing with big platforms what they use whereas I feel like it must've been just celebrities, magazines, and more traditional ads back in the day. Hannah you make such unique and super thought provoking content! Would love to see this grow more in the beauty community and even in other online spaces as well.

I think social media has really normalized big makeup collections. When people who aren't into makeup see my-by influencer standards--very modest stash, they think I'm a hoarder.

@@cinemaocd1752 my mom and sister think I have an insane amount of makeup and I have so much less than most influencers. So when I watch KZfaq my collection seems reasonable but when my family sees it it reminds me that this is not ‘normal.’ That said my mom has a ridiculous amount of shoes and my sister has a cabinet dedicated to tea, so I feel like they don’t have a leg to stand on.

6 or 7 years ago, before I found youtube, and even MLM's I still had a relatively large makeup collection. I at one point had a makeup bag for every day products and another for other products that I only sometimes used. It was more difficult to find good eyeshadow then though. So while I did have a lot of makeup then for the regular girl it was not nearly what it is now. I didn't own a bronzer, blush or highlighter. I used eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara and maybe a gloss. Now I have a pretty full vanity.

I feel like palettes made us jump from small makeup collections to big ones. While I was growing up the norm would be to have a make up bag where you put EVERYTHING, but once we started buying big palettes which wouldn't fit in a normal bag, we sort of transcended the makeup bag and started accumulating more and more.

I keep a spreadsheet with all of my makeup on it. I've got the date I bought them, as well as the one I opened them. Their expiry date. The shade name. The price I payed and where I bought it etc etc. I have a total of how much the entirety of my makeup costs, and when things are past their best buy date so that I can keep an eye on it. I have a second spreadsheet where I track how long things lasted and what my thoughts on them were. It's a largish initial time investment but it is integral to the change in my shopping habits since I started doing it five-ish years ago

YES, QUEEN! I'm so happy you started talking about the total cost of makeup. A few weeks back I commented this under one of your videos and it would be awesome to see more of videos like this from you: Hannah, I've made an excel document with my makeup inventory some time ago and it's one of the best budgeting tools I've used so far. The thing that makes me appreciate what I have and feel content with my collection is that I added a column with the regular price and what I paid for the item. But the most powerful of all was the sum of all prices. At first, it was shocking. Made me not want to buy makeup for months. I have to say that my collection fits in a not so big desk drawer, and it consists of only drugstore or local Polish brands cosmetics (so the total probably wouldn't be so shocking for you as it was for me). I would recommend this to all that struggle with buying too much makeup. Hannah, would you consider doing inventory like this in form of a video? That would be so entertaining. EDIT: The cost of my face today was 101$ full price but I paid 59$ as I'm trying to never pay full price. This doesn't include brushes but I would add maybe 20$ for that.

My face yesterday was $329.51 in makeup and $162.39 in tools; almost $500 all together. I keep track of the total cost of my makeup stash (currently $880) for just this type of reflection. I've worked over the last year (thank you pandemic?) to really curate what I'm holding onto by making sure I'm using it or excited to have it, and to really think before I acquire something new. I'll admit I tend to be more fixated on the number of products, not the value of them, but I still keep a tight budget for makeup since it's so easy to overspend even when you have things you love.

its wild how we just get used to the normal price point of a certain type of product, and forget how much money that actually is. I consider my makeup habits on the cheaper side, but a quick calculation revealed a casual full face for me still costs like $100. If I was just getting into makeup thats a price that would really make me think twice about starting.

I haven’t tried this palette, but the UD shadows last on me so much longer than other palettes. For me, I don’t think they are lacking in quality, and some of the brands I have heard described as better (because they are more impactful when applied) fade off my eyes with primer after a couple of hours. I think it depends on people’s skin/chemistry too.

It might be disturbing though! I wonder if a side effect of this experiment might be an increase in our perceived value of our belongings.

I've been tracking my 'cost per use', average shades used etc, for all of my eyeshadow palettes since last November as it's my problem area - don't fear for my sanity, spreadsheet does all the numbers, I just put a single number in a column each day - it's really helping me identify what I actually use and value.

The government should start handing out rebates for buying electric lawnmowers...they are so much quieter. Noise pollution is real. Why was the Wayne Goss 02 brush a foolish purchase? Is it because it wasn't something you could afford at the time, or because you later ended up getting brushes in PR? Re: the UD formula: if eye shadow won't layer on itself it's bad eye shadow. periodt. I loved the idea of this video and the message. However, my birthday just passed (also Feb 27th lol) and I received some money but I feel frozen by the thought of buying any of the things on my wish list. The teals are what are calling to me but I feel like the shimmery green and matte green from the mermaid Kitten palette maybe do for me what I want from this palette. Everything else I feel like I can dupe.

What a lovely Friday for me, lunch with Hannah! I love this concept of the cost of doing our makeup and then also doing then same for skincare. What a spin on thinking about purchasing, budgeting or a no-buy. Editing Michele -I’m dying laughing over your comments on the UB palette. I appreciate how your verbiage is straightforward without being disrespectful, my opinion.

This has inspired me to calculate my next face of makeup products. It has never occurred to me to do this. Mostly because I don’t want to be reminded about the cost of products because I KNOW I’ll be appalled. However, it’s irresponsible not to understand where our money is spent and where it could be better allocated. As for makeup brushes... as you pointed out, they last. I have brushes that have lasted 25 years (yes I started young), but I am a lover of Fude (Japanese handmade makeup brushes). For me adding to my makeup brushes is an investment to my collection. Although pricey, they last forever if taken care of and they bring me enjoyment every day. I see them as more of a functioning work of art. As for Urban Decay Naked Palettes, I was never compelled to buy one. Odd, seeing as how I have so many other types of palettes. They just never appealed to me.

Interesting! My cost for today was $158, and it was mostly drugstore. The Charlotte Tilbury powder was the big exception, but at least it takes a long time to use that up. I could have easily had a much more expensive day if I had made different eyeshadow choices.

I feel like all I have heard in terms of the UD WW palette is how good it is and that I must be in the minority how utterly uninterested I am. The colors are not unique, the Naked theme is outdated and boring, and the quality of their formula is on par with drugstore nowadays. They honestly could have caught my attention more with a western themed palette that wasn't a Naked brand palette. That would have felt more original than a 'Naked' wild west palette. Time to retire Naked, UD.

My version would be: Primer 35 Brows 8 Eye primer 8 Concealer 30 Corrector 26 Powder 42 Bronzer 30 Blush 30 Eye color 26 Lip 19 Face spray 30 Brushes: let’s say 60 Not exact science, just what I remember the prices to have been. That’s 314 euro. And i kinda counted out that makeup should cost me like max 25 euro per month earlier in what i use up(..in like a normal year). I do have a few things to select from in color cosmetics, but i still tend to gravitate towards the same things every day - and even if not the prices were pretty comparable. In dollars that would be 372. Not too bad since most of these do last me the year if not longer.

Wow, that was really interesting to watch, thank you! I immediately went and added up the cost of my face of makeup today, and I ended up with "just" 185€! Most of that is because the brushes I use are not the cheapest, but they aren't really expensive ones either. Also, I'm currently trying out some really affordable drugstore makeup. So I could have ended up at about 260€ I guess, but that's about it. I wouldn't have switched all of the affordable products, too - I'm a longtime fan of the Catrice Liquid Camouflage concealer for example, and I refuse to spend over 10€ for mascara. I use single eyeshadows exclusively, and that is so much more affordable than putting money into palettes, even for a single look. It's strange, I expected to end up way more expensive, but I guess due to the fact I'm absolutely not into luxury makeup, I'm doing... Okay. Ish.

Bravo! I bought a lot of makeup this year as entertainment as we were locked down. I realized a few months ago that it was OUT. OF. HAND. After that, I began watching youtubers differently, especially as they "decluttered". Kinda shocking. I have gotten much more selective and am trying to use things up before buying a different brand of something similar to an item that I already have. How does it make me feel? Embarrassed. On the other hand, there are way worse "habits." Still, I will continue to be more aware of my make up spending.

This is a good point. Just on my eyes I used 3 palettes today and that there is nearly $100. Granted I didn't need to play in all three at once, but I did choose to. The rest my face without counting brushes was $85 - and I used a very cheap blush and higlighter today.

I am aware that I have spent a large amount of money on the makeup that I have but I feel like if I kind of make a mental note about how much I spent using the makeup I choose to use daily it will really help drive that concept home in my mind. Just the makeup that I use every day is over $55. That is just under eye concealor / color corrector, a brow gel and mascara. If I were to consistently use blush, bronzer and highlighter that is nearly another $100. I typically don't. I usually use blush and highlight or bronzer and highlighter. I do typically use two palettes these days and that is in itself typically at least $50. So without brushes included I'm typically probably using more than $150 worth of product per day.

I know for a fact that a person can wear the most expensive shit on their face... lol No one would notice the difference, or care one bit. This is coming from an artist who enjoys playing with some expensive makeup & finding new & innovative products.. I have my choices and reasons. I speak with life wisdom & experience. I guarantee you that 75% + people we encounter in life wouldn't even notice. We do it for ourselves.

I buy almost everything on sale and don’t keep track of how much I actually spent. But I know that a full face would still be a lot of money, that I could have used on something else. That said I think makeup and beautiful things in general do have a value so I am not mad about spending the money that way. Also when I started buying more makeup I pretty much stopped buying new clothes/shoes. Makeup is cheaper than clothes and fulfills my desire to be creative and artistic with my appearance.

I was just finishing putting my makeup away when I saw this video, so I didn't calculate how much my look would have costed me... I estimate around 200 dollars? I have an excel sheet with all my make-up and all the makeup I have used up in the last couple of years, so I know exactly how much my collection has costed me, and how much of it was used up (worth the money! )And how much was decluttered or expired on me (not worth the money). The latter category makes me a bit sad, however the cost of my collection itself doesn't. Because the money I spend on makeup is actually bringing me joy every morning when I do my makeup, is giving me a creative outlet, and is allowing me to have a little meditation time for myself when I play with my collection. I try to be a consicous consumer, but the spending when under control is not negative to me 😊

Just the makeup of my usual "full face" application is definitely below 100€. The most expensive items I use are my go-to blush & bronzer which are in a 20€ blush duo. I don't wear base products, but I use concealer to prime my eyes (if I use eyeshadow), which I bought for maybe 15€. I only own single eyeshadows with an average cost of 5€-6€, so depending on how many I use, that could potential add a lot to the overall cost. I primarily have cheap lip products, the one I'm wearing right now was probably less than 5€. My brushes would definitely add quite a bit more, I mostly use Sigma brushes, which aren't super expensive but it adds up quickly. While I think it's an interesting exercise to remind yourself of how expensive makeup is. I don't think it's a good representation, tho'. I personally think having an inventory which includes all of the prices is more useful to talk myself out of tempting releases (honestly very little releases are tempting me tho'). I also think cost per use is essential for makeup. If you own more stuff, you can use each individual product fewer times.

Even as a makeup minimalist my makeup added up to 126 Euro. But it’s also everything I own in the makeup department. The most expensive things are skin and lips because it’s organic. For the eye makeup I use organic brands from the drugstore because the expensive organic ones sadly don’t last all day long in my experience.

I got $608 AUD for a go to daily face. Crazy to think about it in this way. I had products ranging from $8 to $145 AUD. It's a good reminder to invest in tools which were my most expensive things that service my needs for a long time and not to splurge on things like brow or mascara etc which no one but you can tell how much they are worth. EThis is helping me on a sort of no buy I have till my bday 😸 Edit: Every item tallied had a discount applied. I'm a sucker for getting things on sale which I used to think justifying the costs.

Personally i think this is more capex then opex. So cost of a face would be the initial investment divided by the lifetime and number of uses of faces. This is why i don t duplicate a lot ( exept in lipsticks) because i want the sum of my faces to be close to the total inital investment. So i have 1 foundation and 1 concealer 1 mascara and 1 eyeliner and not a lot of eyeshadow . However let's calculate my daily face investement 118 euros ( chanel velvet foundation, nudestix mini, dr papapaw red tinted balm, revlon liquid illuminator, dior eyeliner). If i go for added polish it would be an extra 80 euros ( eyeshadow, lipstick , blender brush).

OK I just added up my makeup from this morning (not even tools or brushes bc I don't pay that close attention to what I'm using tbh) and my face was $270 of my own money which is SHOCKING. I know I got some of the stuff on sale, but still, I can't believe how much it costs to do makeup for one day! I used mostly drugstore as well, and I did use four different eye shadow palettes and a cream contour with a bronzer, but still. So bonkers!

I’m so glad that I’m not alone in my feelings of the Wild West naked palette. Everyone was going crazy about it and I was just thinking... can’t people see it’s just a basic naked palette with a couple greens and a rust shadow? It’s boring! I decluttered my only naked palette long ago because I just need more impact. I would also like to say that I purchased the Erin’s faces sunscreen on your recommendation and it is fabulous! The whole experience was great. Fast shipping, personalized hand written note on my receipt, and a lot of care in packaging and shipping. I could easily sit down right now and put a $1,000 face of makeup on and not even use a small portion of the makeup I have purchased.

It's interesting you talking about the Urban Decay palette being really light and washy. I don't own a lot of eyeshadow so for me the palette looked interesting because mostly neutrals but with some tealy pops sounded like something I would actually use. So I looked up some reviews and have seen people say that this one is more impactful than other naked shades and they can get it really deep and dark if they go in with a wet brush. I'm still on the fence about buying it though because I'm not sure I want it if it will be really washy and lackluster, like the ultraviolet one, of which I didn't see a single good review. I guess I'll have to wait till I can go in to a shop and touch things!

If it is anything like Naked Honey, it should be good quality. My only complaint with that palette was that the deepest brown wasn't very deep, I didn't love the orangy shades (though that is just personal taste and complexion) and that one of those golden shades was pretty sheer. My fav part of that palette was the satin cream shade. It worked phenomenally as a highlighter shade. You just have to know what you're signing up for. Cate the great did a live using it and based on how it applied and blended for her I was very tempted to purchase the palette. It is interesting though that Hannah dislikes this palette as much as she does but loves colorpop shadows. I do believe if Colourpop duped this, or any othe palette, it would perform just as well.
