In the long term Benfica benefits from this strategy because it uses its funds on improving infrastructure and buying more talent while remaining under fan control. So in 20 years we will see.

When I was a kid, I remember seeing a documentary here in the UK all about how Ajax was considered the best club to join as a young player because their whole business model was to showcase you at a young age & sell you to an even bigger club for profit. So I was quite surprised that they weren't top of the list, but was fascinated to hear the reasons behind Benfica usurping them!

I think the key to having success for clubs like Benfica is to have a golden generation that can be convinced to stick together for a few years to achieve greatness, almost like Ajax did a few years ago before players like de Jong, de Ligt, Ziyech, etc. left.
@alfonsstekebrugge8049
@alfonsstekebrugge8049 Жыл бұрын
Yeah Ajax didn't just have a golden generation out of nowhere though. What they did was buy and sign very able role players and one underrated player who really is absolute world class in Tadic. With that the core was set and basically they can consistently rotate youth players in and keep a solid experienced core intact. Ajax has been very consistent for years now, Benfica much less so. There is no reason why Benfica can not do the same thing or Porto for that matter. But let's be clear here, what Benfica is doing now is already worthy of lots of respect, they punch above their weight very often and it's great to see such underdogs do well.

As a benfica fan it’s very heartbreaking to see the top players always going away. And it creates a constant cycle of the roster, and it becomes impossible to create a solid team. But besides all the financial pressures, the players want to move the more prestigious leagues, like England, and it’s hard to hold them against their will. Even in spite of all the talent we may have , teams from little countries such Portugal, have no chance. The system ensures that only teams from big leagues may win the CL.

For those mentioning Ajax, Benfica is affected much more than them. They don’t even win the Portuguese league anymore as a result. Plus, Ajax isn't even the 2nd most affected; it's Porto. Portugal is the biggest talent hub in world football; no one else comes close. Some people mistake it's the Dutch league, but they're not comparable. As shown on the video on teams most affected, the Portugal league has four clubs with a total balance of over 1.5b, whilst the Dutch league only has one club, Ajax, with a total balance of 350m. We lose squads worth of talent every year, not a few players. If not for our population size Portugal league would have been a powerhouse; Unfortunately, that's not the case.

@@abhaydeepsingh3368 I don’t know neither, but you can assume that they spend a lot in marketing, much more than the other 3 clubs in Portugal, the most known ones, and that gives them good results in the sense that they are very well known world wide. But the fact they are a public company in the stock market they have to get to stain numbers in the balance sheet, so for that reason in terms of sale looks like they make to much money, but the work that was made and spent was huge so the money that really matters is not the so big of a deal. But all of this was an extra point that I was saying about the justification from the other guy, if all clubs kept their best players we would not have a market and all be good or one of the best teams of the world. This is unfortunately a growing trend with smaller clubs. They get worse and worse slices of the money pie every single year compared to the big clubs so they need to sell their better players. Lots of smaller clubs in the big leagues suffer from this as well, they get a few good players and instead of building a squad they sell them. The worst part is, even if the club's directive wanted to keep them, they risk the players themselves wanting to "upgrade" to bigger clubs and either not playing or waiting out for their contract to end. So in a way they're forced to sell their best players, because otherwise they might lose them for nothing. Money has ruined the passion for playing for your club

I was playing a lot of football manager since 2002. when you asked who makes the most, I was thinking of Ajax first then Portugal clubs, Sporting used to be the top but then I remembered how Benfica sells the top players, mainly strikers ever since like 2005ish.

It's exactly the same situation in Uruguay only worse because we're even smaller (in population) than Portugal, 3.4 million people. The two big clubs (Peñarol and Nacional) take all the local talents and sell them go Europe, so the team it's totally new every year. And for that reason neither Peñarol or Nacional won a Libertadores again since 1988. But while out local teams suffer, by having a strong base and the possibility of the selection of every probable good player our national teams (Uruguay and Portugal) are extremely competitive despite having much smaller population. Having great positions in the world cup and even winning the Euro (for Portugal) and the Copa América (for Uruguay)

Another big problem for teams like Benfica and Porto is that half of the salary from the players is taxes so is very hard to keep up with teams from nethersland or teams from the top 5 For exemple: Benfica whanted Mario Gotze from PSV. But in the dutchland he wages 3mil+ and is totally impossible to a portuguese team get to this numbers because 3millions clean is equal to 6millions gross Portugal is a very hard market but even like that Benfica and Porto manage to be strong teams in Europe

First i would like to congratulate you for this video that has a complete different insight of the general football videos. It honestly made me think about the conjecture of the market. Normal football fans like or to complicate or simplify transfers has "my club is better than yours" point of view. In the showcase Benfica follow´s a system that is only possible because the "normal" income for a club in such a small country would make it impossible to be competitive in Europe. If any person would make a starting eleven with the players sold by Benfica they could see that if Benfica had the income (without selling players) to retain their players they would be VERY competitive in Europe. That being said, i think that clubs like Real madrid/Barcelona and mostly the top 15 clubs in Premier League want and need immediate results has just being in the Premier League gives them more income that all the income in a club like Benfica. So ... i think they see clubs like Benfica or Ajax has a training ground for talent. They know they are paying the "big bucks" but they expect that players coming from those clubs are "Premier League ready". I´m using PL has an example because for me is by far the most competitive and where the best managers/players are and want to play. If you pick any middle club trying to use thys "system" in PL they would have a major hard time being competitive and mostly would be relegated sooner or later because all the other clubs they are competing against have "proved quality status". Where does that status come from? Benfica players are not bought mostly for their portuguese league stats. They are scouted playing against the major clubs in Champions League. Is there that if they show their quality and mature status they they get their "value" for playing in the PL. I would like to just leave one last comment for a player that in some videos is being criticised : João Felix! João was the biggest sale in Benfica, he went to Atletico Madrid because was the club that offered the most. A.M. has Simeone has a coach and a football system that is not build for creative players. Time will tell, but i think that in this loan to Chelsea you will all be able to see how special his football is. Thank you for the awesome video.

Oh yes my Benfica & still the most it can do is reach the quarter finals in the UCL! Basically Benfica Porto Sporting and the portuguese league in general is like we usually say in Portugal the football school of Europe - we get young promising players still developing their game and then when they reach the desired point we sell them for a big profit so we can bring more players and train them and sell them for a lot more and the cicle continues. Still UCL finals still continues to be a forbidden fruit although conquered but long time ago.

The key is really in striking a balance between the business side and the results side. Benfica fans have made peace with signing strong names fit for boosting shirt sales like Vertonghen, Otamendi and Weigl that are great to talk about but don't really deliver consistently as they once did. Obviously the fans would love for Benfica to be a strong European contender but the strategy has been for money making and not for glory. Their former president always promised great European runs and always failed to deliver still people would elect him to new terms. Until recently management didn't really seem that interested in Europe and coach Jorge Jesus disregarded the European competitions because he knew that most people are realistic and would prefer to be domestic champions than to have a quarter or semi final loss and risk losing it all. Benfica's president left because he is under fiscal investigation leaving his vice president in office. He then called elections and won but really the plan seems to be the same for now, only time will tell if he has enough charisma to change deeply set mentalities within the club. And also, as with Porto, the "profit" is heavily diluted when you account for the sums delivered to the many agents, scouts, youth teams and others involved in the transfers. It's a very dirty game of monopoly leaving us, the fans, in despair and the bosses with heavy pockets full of money.

As I saw another user suggest a video topic, I hope you won't mind me suggesting one too: "What is the legacy of the Heysel disaster / the European ban on English clubs?" I recently heard it suggested that, without access to European football with its glamour & revenue, the top English clubs (the so-called "Big five" of their day: Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton) decided they needed to elevate England's top league into a "super league" of sorts by making it more exclusive (cutting the number of clubs) & giving it a much more glamorous American-style TV presentation. The "Premier League" was born, replacing what was previously simply "The English First Division". UEFA took note of its increased popularity & adapted the European Cup into the Champions League. Maybe this is just English propaganda though! If it's of interest, the Wikipedia page "Foundation of the Premier League" has more details!

Just to make a little addition in the Ederson transfer from Rio Ave to Benfica. It was that cheap because the player had originally come from Benfica to Rio Ave, right after finalizing the youth levels at Benfica and finding no opportunities in the main roster. So he went to Rio Ave for free with an already pre-agreed fee for him to come back to Benfica, if he excelled, wich he did and Benfica exercised that clause after they sold Jan Oblak to Atletico, and needed a new number 1. In a sense it was comparable to a kind of loan.

tbf with the Portuguese league staying competitive in both Europe and in the league itself, there should be greater revenue to come from tv rights. Portugal is already starting to pull ahead of the French league and if Germany isn't careful, they could start falling behind the Portuguese league as well. Although I would say the Portuguese league could probably do with cash injections to the smaller clubs and sorting the TV revenue a bit better if they want to capitalise on this chance.
@RodrigoroRex
@RodrigoroRex Жыл бұрын
Yeah that maybe right but France and Germany have a lot more people that watch their leagues in their countries. Portugal will never match up the same broadcasting deals. Only la Liga and Premier League have a big international presence that results in bigger revenue. We'll never match up with our small population. It's just how it is
@joshbrown2217
@joshbrown2217 Жыл бұрын
@@RodrigoroRex Ah yeah that is true, but I do also think that should the Portuguese league get to a certain level, they could definitely start packaging international tv deals better than the French and German leagues, which may still not result in the same amount of viewership, could amount to more money, as it would be a tv deal to various different countries at more value. Also tbf if they can take advantage of Brazilian viewership, then those numbers could shoot up more.

Great video 👌 just one thing wrong. Benfica and Porto don't have a low income because of small population. It's because of the clubs structure where fans vote for who they want as president and so, there is little incentive for investors to put large amounts of money in the club because no matter how much they put, they'll never have control of the club
