I see a trend in the NBA. New owner/GM cones in and wants to make a splash and sign huge names to try to buy a fast ring. They mortgage away their entire future, and then never come close to a ring.

Nets: traded their depth away and star center J. Allen for Harden who leaves team in shambles. Suns: traded depth away and ended up with the failed durant/booker/beal big 3 Clippers: traded everything for PG13. He never fit w/kawhi who is made of glass The only team who got away with it was LAL because they bought top5 superstars who fit w/each other and veterans like rondo and danny green & still needed 6 games vs a depleted 5th seed. The lesson is that mortgaging future only works if the superstars are strong fits and they can get playoff-level veterans who are willing to take discounts to ring chase.

I really respect Westbrook & his heart, I feel like Lakers Nation was unfair to him & it wasn’t the best spot. But man he put a really hard ceiling on a team that should’ve been much better. Winning franchises in professional sports have two things in common: 1. They rarely make bad to horrible trades, meaning they always the exact players they need to win 2. They always end up with useful draft picks who end up as the hearts and souls of those franchises. Losing franchises do exactly the opposite, and their fans start to wonder why they never win. Bad front office management and bad ownership usually end up in losing franchises. Winning teams? The opposite

OKC had them over a barrel since Kawhi wasn't going to sign without PG. And even still 4-5 firsts for Kawhi -- who was considered the best player on the planet -- and 3-4 for PG -- who had just finished third in MVP voting -- wasn't too high a price. (And that's really how you need to think about it because signing Kawhi and keeping SGA was not an option. Not that anyone thought SGA would ever be better than PG) If anything considering what teams paid for Gobert and Dejounte Murray shortly thereafter it was a steal. Sometimes you just get unlucky. That's life and that's sports. Hell Minnesota made a horrible trade for Gobert and needed like 5 different things to go exactly right to get here and now they are winning. It's all luck. San Antonio is a "winning" franchise because of f**king lottery balls. GS is a "winning" franchise because Draymond Green randomly turned out to be the perfect guy to play with Steph Curry, who himself was a lucky pick because he should have been drafted at 6. Detroit traded Grant Hill and asked for John Amaechi but Orlando insisted on Ben Wallace; then the same GM drafted Darko over Wade or Bosh. Chicago was a "winning" franchise because Portland took Sam Bowie. Denver drafted a 3 time MVP in the second round. Luck. Luck. Luck. Luck. Luck. Luck. It's all random. There are well run and poorly run teams but 90% if it is luck. Getting the right pick in the right year, being in the right place at the right time, and acquiring a guy who changes your luck.

They should have sent only the picks and told OKC to walk if that wasn't enough. @@luisrodriguez-mb7cc Considering 10 superstars account for 33 of the 43 titles since 1980, well, yes. If you weren't lucky enough to have one (or two) of those ten -- and aren't the Pistons -- you probably don't have a championship. Certainly bad owners and bad executives exist who make short sighted trades and continually mis-evaluate players. I'm not saying David Kahn, Ernie Grunfeld, Elgin Baylor, Isiah Thomas, etc. were secretly good executives. Or at Donald Sterling, George Shinn, Robert Sarver, Ted Stepien, etc. aren't awful owners. And there are good owners and good GM's -- Jerry Buss, Red Auerbach, Pat Riley -- but they are further and fewer between than we pretend. (Although good coaches are definitely a thing.) It's hard to argue with Auerbach who hand picked Russell and Bird -- trading to get Russ and drafting Bird a year early -- or that Jerry Buss was instrumental in making the Lakers the Lakers which led to Shaq, Kobe, LeBron and AD. And how Riley developed Spo and created Heat Culture. But I mean the Lakers dynasty was based on the then New Orleans Jazz signing an aging Gail Goodrich and then the league _post facto_ giving LA multiple draft choices as compensation -- part of the league's plan to kill free agency -- and then one of those draft picks turning into Magic Johnson. Oh and they had #1 pick not #2 because LA won a literal *COIN TOSS* But that is something other than luck? Seriously? The Lakers entire brand is built on something that was completely out of their control. (Of course the irony is the NBA later blocked LA from acquiring Chris Paul from the new New Orleans franchise which led to them getting Pau Gasol who helped them win two more titles.) Yes, teams are unlucky too. When Detroit gets the #1 pick in the year it's Cade not Ant or Wemby that's unlucky. The entire Markelle Fultz situation is wildly unlucky. So is Ben Simmons having a mid-career mental breakdown. So is Derrick Rose tearing everything in his knee. The KD, Harden and Irving Nets and the Kawhi-PG Clippers were both undone by injuries and a once per century global plague! How is that anything but unlucky?

The idea you wouldn't trade the 11th pick in the 2018 draft and a bunch of firsts to pair the best player (at 28) with a top 3 MVP finisher (at 29) --- _NOT_ doing that trade would have been malpractice. How exactly can that pattern be followed? They drafted Kevin Durant -- one of the top 15 prospects ever -- and then the best player in the world said he'd only sign with LA if they traded for PG who just so happened to be in OKC. And then they got the #2 pick in the year where the absolute perfect player for their play style was sitting. You might as well follow the pattern you won six titles with and just draft the best player ever. But you do need to rebuild. Unfortunately you're closer to where Detroit was when they started their rebuild than where OKC was in terms of assets

There isn’t a single team that wouldn’t have made that trade. Look at the Cavs. They did something similar. When they got Bron they traded Wiggins for K Love…it’s the same move besides the fact that it didn’t work out well for the Clippers. He wasn't going to the Lakers or back to Toronto. The compensation was staggering and even with Kawhi and PG there was no way that having those two was worth removing flexibility and the possibility of crippling the franchise for an entire decade. The issue was PG has max contract and 2 more years in OKC. PG force his way out. Sam Presti ain't going let PG walk with out something in return. Shai will never be developed as he was today if he played with Kawhi. Look at the current Clippers youth member so many miss opportunities. Bottom line PG wasn't worth that much picks and he wasn't that guy. Even if they made to WCF.

SGA will bring OKC a championship within the next 3-4 years and that could very well come right now with the way they're playing. Sam Presti, the GM for the Thunder, will go down in history for arguably the stupidest trade ever made in the NBA giving away Harden who was an MVP level player. That trade cost OKC a dynasty. They would have gone on to win multiple championships and the Warriors dynasty never would have happened. Outside of that debacle though has been absolutely excellent and looks like he will redeem himself.

I can't really say trading Shai is a bad trade for the Clippers. It's just that with the Clippers roster at that time, Shai would not have grown to be the superstar he is today if he stayed in LA. What's really disturbing is how many 1st round picks the Clippers threw away to get Pandemic P 🤦‍♂

The issue was PG has a huge baggage with OKC. Max with 2 years left. Sam Presti isn't going to let PG walk with out something. Even if Shai stay. I doubt Doc Rivers care about development him. Shai to OKC was best for him. Bottom line PG wasn't that guy. Or worth that much trade. Even if they made to WCF.

That’s hindsight tho bro bc at the time of the trade you was only getting kawhi if Paul came so it was really PG and Kawhi for shai 🤷🏾‍♂️ shai is a hell of a player now most definitely top 5 but at the time he was still pretty much a late lottery prospect with hella talent/potential.. idk win win for both squads

@@And.One.Hoops1 I must’ve missed it. We were all saying that too lol. But you know what, I would rather do that than trade for Vooch. At least Gobert plays defense. Vooch doesn’t play defense and has lost his offense. And Wolfs are close to a chip. We can’t say that.
