It’s a sad thing to realize that Kellogg was a more interesting character than Father, or your own playable character. I could easily have seen him be a good main villain, or even the main character. He had something that really reminds me of Ulysses, though a bit less philosophical and more “I just want you dead” or “I’m going to finish the job” wasn’t so much personal as it was business, and the sad thing about it, is not only how wasted he is, but about how little of it felt intentional. It definitely seemed like the writers just wanted you to hate him, but instead of hate I could more see something to sympathize with. He was no different to MacCready in some ways, honestly would have rather had him as a companion, if for no other reason than to get more out of his character. As it stands Kellogg is just one of the many hundreds if not thousands of missed opportunities in Fo4.

Its really easy too. When speaking, Kellog just flat out tells the Sole Survivor and him are all puppets, and we could have given him the chance to explain and let him convince us. But its definitrlt also out of charscter for him to want to partner up with the Sole Survivor, and for the Sole Survivor to want to partner up with him, given that he killed their spouse. ButKellog would probably try it, just to one up rhe old man. So it could have gone like this: Kellog says they are both puppets. SS demands an explanation and Kellog explains how he was set up for you to track him. He was sent to Diamond City with a kid, so when you got out investigating, you find a lead. Which eventually you did. And the Institute expect you to finish off Kellog. The SS is gicen the choice to acceot his story, which opens more dialogue, not accept it or say they dont care, which then it will lead to combat. If the SS accepts, Kellog explains that the institute is inreachable, but h has a potential leverage. However, he will need to do something first in order to proceed. You then start to fight the synths alingside Kellog. Kellog then sets a meeting place, because you both will need to leave since the place is gonna be swarming with synths and coursers (Imagine the Institute would send Coursers for Kellog, given how they sent one against the Railroad). You guys get out, aee the Brotherhood arrive, Kellog comments how that createe an opportunity since now the Institute is gonna be focused on them. You guys then meet wherever he says (probably somewhere south, close to the Glowing Sea, because his plan is to get to Virgil). Then he explains how the Institute operates. How and why the create synths. Why they capture and replace people, and gice an indeoth explanation, unlike Father with the "you wouldnt understand" bs. So then the plan is to get to Virigl and demand a way in. Virgil will tske some convincing, which you can then persuade him, by saying Kellog isnt going ro kill you, so he owes Kellog an answer as a thank you. When he mentions killing a Courser, Kellog offers hinself as a companion, claiming you'll need all the help you can get to handle a Courser, and your current company (if you have a companion then) wint suffice. You then now have Kellog as a follower.

If they ever introduce Nick to a future fallout game bringing that concept or having him be a mix of Nick, Kellogg, and his own experiences shape his personality would make an interesting character that.

Kellogs definitely living a life worse then death being stuck in a robots mind unable to do anything. He probably should have asked the institute to either erase his mind or give him full control before he lost it.

To add on to my original comment, what Bethesda don’t seem to grasp, is that it’s the small collection of narratives from different characters and their nuanced perspectives on the world that seamlessly weave together that create an interesting world worth exploring. What made New Vegas so great is the anecdotes from various characters about the state of the Mojave, that really put the world into perspective.

Another Theory: Kellogg isn´t taking over Nick but the sole survivor. Both had the memories and it is plausible that the sole survivor hears Kollogs voice while Nick is saying something very different. Besides the human brain is very programable, too. And Nick even says "must be nmemonic impressions left over" so he likley didn´t hear Kellogs voice and does not know what´s going on.

The fact the mnemonic impressions persisted through Nick even for those few minutes proves Kellogg found a way to get a foothold in Nick. Hes in there looking for a way to get control, and survive. Hence Nick can never be trusted ever after. Synths cant be trusted technology run amok.

I know Kellog's cybernetics were going to be useable by the SS, but unfortunately cut. Imagine if when you implanted them, implanting the brain augmenter made you hear Kellogs voice from time to time. Taunting you or mayne helping you when in the Institute. Telling you thar you should wipe them all out.

It’s an interesting question. Answer is I don’t really know. I’d like to think so but here’s food for thought….what weapon does Nick Valentine fight with when you don’t equip him with one? A pipe revolver….I’d say that’s not an accident. I’d say that maybe a hint that Kellogg is alive inside Nick. Besides Nick Valentine is a kind person, I don’t think he’d eliminate Kellogg, nope I’d say he’d allow Kellogg to carry on, only charging him with combat knowledge and that’s why Nick uses a pipe revolver because you have Kellogg’s gun. It strikes me as odd that Kellogg wouldn’t opt for continuing on if given the choice and Nick probably did and thus unknown to us every time we talk to Valentine, we’re looking into two sets of eyes….Nick’s and Kellogg’s. I suspect if nick’s personality ever became damaged enough…..Kellogg would walk again.
