The Tragic Real Life and Difficult Final Days of Chico Marx.
Chico Marx (1887-1961) was an American actor, comedian, and musician, best known for being one of the Marx Brothers comedy group. Born Leonard Marx in New York City, Chico started performing at a young age with his brothers, Harpo and Groucho. Chico's comedy style was characterized by his thick Italian accent, quick wit, and clever wordplay. He was also a skilled musician and played the piano, harp, and other instruments in the Marx Brothers' films and performances. Chico's career spanned several decades and included over a dozen films with the Marx Brothers, as well as solo work in vaudeville, radio, and television. He remains a beloved figure in American comedy and entertainment history.

Harpo's memoirs " Harpo Speaks " is one of the funniest books I ever read. Also virtually a case study in personality development as it describes the very different ways mother Minnie treated her sons. The reader cannot fail to understand how Chico was spoiled into irresponsible vanity, how Harpo grew up quietly in Chico's shadow to become a compassionate listener, and how poor Groucho always felt unloved and distrustful of women. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to any fan of the Marx Bros. Please find it , read it, and enjoy.

@@sciencedavedunning3415 many thanks for the recommendation. That was a sad time in US history. I doubt anyone came away unscathed. Mind you we could say that about any point in the history of our existence. Easy to understand the favouritism Chico received, during the Gershwin bio flic of the 50s, it was told that George Gershwin got his first break filling in for Chico playing piano in silent movie cinemas. He would have been a main income source for the Marx family who were as destitute as any other honest people those days

@MrGeorge514131 The Marx parents ( Frenchy and Minnie ) lost thier first son within a year of his birth. When Leonard ( Chico ) was born, he was thier prize, thier treasure. He could do no wrong, no matter his gambling or petty theft. He was celebrated above thier next born ( Harpo ) who grew up in Chico's shadow. Poor Groucho was constantly being told how homely and untalented he was, compared to Chico. When you read how Groucho lost his virginity and caught the clap at the same time, you will understand his mistrust and resentment of woman. True that it was rough for kids in the slums and tenements of turn of the century New York. Especially sneaking through Irish or Italian neighborhoods hostile to the Jewish Boys. That was how Chico perfected his dialects, so he and Harpo could get home safely. Oh, it's a wonderful book ! Wait till you read about the crash of 1929 and the "Pinchy Winchy" game !

@@sciencedavedunning3415 I see that you have been busy doing your homework. I believe that the parental attitudes of the day did play a huge role in the relationship , I am from a Greek background and have seen such things in my community. Being the type of person who prefers to break rules and especially breaks those cycles that many find themselves in. I grew up with racism all around me and my sister but that helped me find myself, I to this day defend those that can’t defend themselves and was a unionist when I worked on building sites, refineries and ship yards. Wouldn’t swap the past for a billion dollars. The struggles and fights were the best education I have ever received, I think you’ll find that the brothers Marx will agree. It’s also quite normal for siblings of European parents are all expected to play their roles unquestioningly and happily doing it. Too offensive for me I decided that it was better to be myself than some bullshit fantasy from a Brady Bunch episode. Don’t know what was going on in your neck of the woods but such nonsense shows from the 40s 50s 60s and 70s caused all sorts of problems in migrant families who couldn’t understand why their lives weren’t as successful as their role models on TV. I have known a few people of similar backgrounds as these guys and yes this still happens, at least organised marriages are not the norm anymore.

@@voicetube KZfaq is all about the money, not about holding these channels owners to a higher standard. As a former channel owner myself, I got tired of being told what words were "appropriate " Examples: Sex worker instead of prostitute, assaulted instead of sexually assaulted, undocumented immigrant instead of illegal.. I don't give into being told what words myself or my subscribers can post, even when appropriate language is used. So I parted ways with KZfaq.
