You know what's crazy? How audio diaries in the Bioshock 2 and the other Bioshock games have more detailed and deeper stories than many games nowadays.

I feel like bioshock 2's main strory got overshadowed by the amazing side stories and the DLC

I'm a father, I have a little girl of my own. So when this story played out for me in my game it was especially poignant. I can't imagine what was going through Mark's mind as this all transpired, but I can't say for certain that I wouldn't have done the exact same thing in his case.

Mark Meltzer is one of my favorite Bioshock characters ever. I wish we would have seen more of him... but somehow it is also perfect the way it is.

It was sad for Meltzer . In the earlier levels, I heard him and when i got to the room he was gone. When I played the game, I didn't know it was him when he became a Big Daddy. after I killed and listen to his audio video . I felt bad. Meltzer told Sofia that he wasn't the first person that found Rapture and he won't be the last. When I ended his life, I was sad but I felt I put him out of his misery and rescue his daughter. Meltzer would have wanted his daughter free . I was determine to stop Sofia and her insane plans. I saved Cindy and free her, I made sure that Mark Meltzer doesn't spend the rest of his life as a Big Daddy. I free them both. Even if it was a tragedy.

I LOVED following Mark’s story throughout the game. It was so.. so.. dark yet riveting. My heart broke for him when he became a big daddy and I found out I killed him. Holy shit that story had my heart more than the campaign story 😅 You my man Mark, may you and Cindy be together forever in death

This would’ve been great DLC

I was listening to Mark's audio diaries and was engrossed in the story, but by the time I saw him I just immediately froze and drilled him and only after the fact realized it was him. Kind of an underwhelming death for good old Mark lol

This was probably one the saddest “side stories” I’ve ever seen in Bioshock...I immediately saved Cindy and didn’t use her to collect ADAM. For Marks sake...

One thing I didn't notice mentioned in the video or the comments is how great of a voice actor the person that voiced Meltzer is. He really sold the character and the story for me. Him and actor of Potter from Minerva's Den.

It's incredible in what's amounts to about 5 minutes of audiologs and dealing with him as a Big Daddy how much this hits like a ton of bricks. This is even without me having prior knowledge of the ARG with him. It's crazy to think that he initially wasn't going to be in the game. The amount of determination to find his daughter and to find Rapture...dude was like Liam Neeson in Taken...too bad his story ends in tragedy.

Yes, everything is true. Meltzer wants to find his daughter in the Rapture. When Big Sister grab his daughters and Meltzer tried defeat Big Sister but failed. Both Cindy and Meltzer are capture by Sofia lamb his choice to Cindy side and become Big Daddy. Poor Meltzer. If he had a chance get power and weapons like Jack do.

I went through the whole game up until that point hoping with all my being that he was going to be successful. It actually emotionally hurt when I finally found him.

This is a story I will never get bored of. I try to leave him and Cindy alone whenever I can but a lot of the times, I have hypnosis on an Alpha or a big daddy and he ends up attacking Mark, and/or I’m trying to shoot down a splicer, following by a lot of guilt. Lol, but thanks, I really enjoyed the video

I feel really really sorry for this man. First off, having your kid be kidnapped, and then prolly dying to the player. That doesn't compare to becoming a big daddy. Protecting a random child until you die must suck. Loved the vid btw. I love lore videos like this, I'm play Bioshock 1 2 and Infinite in my spare time, and lore vids like these help a new person to a game understand the backstory.

i thought he was dead when he fight against big sister i search for his corpse but i dont found it then today i see a random video about shock2 and i know he be a big dady what bring me to you again his story its very interesting i love it more than the main story

My girlfriend and I missed the last diary for Meltzer, and when I went to loot the big daddy corpese and it was named we both were speechless. Thank you for recapping his story. (Also when I killed Meltzer, again without knowing, there was no little sister. So I don't know where the fuck Cindy was. We got the best ending so I assume she's with Eleanor on the surface and no one can tell me otherwise)

YES, that was one of those fantastic stories of Bioshock. Very tragic deep story, especially as i am a father myself! The Mark Meltzer story coupled with the Charles Milton Porter story was the best in Bioshock 2 imo

Audio logs is such a genius idea, unlike boring big text blocks like other games. You get to listen to great lore with great voice acting and can still play the game while you hear it! Wish more games would do this

My favorite part of that game was honestly the Diaries... I love it when games use audio diaries to tell back stories and important details in more immersive way like with Mark Meltzer's story.

I have really been enjoying your biographies of the Bioshock characters. I was really looking forward to this one! I do have a couple of critiques though. First, I think it would have been a lot better if you began with summarizing Something in the Sea and thus gave a framework for Cindy's kidnapping. By starting with her kidnapping with zero context, it doesn't make much sense. And more information about his search in general, pulled from the Something in the Sea archives would have really been a benefit, since it was such a huge piece of his life. Like, how did he even start searching, why did that lead to Cindy being kidnapped? How did he found stories about the missing artists and scientists, and begin piecing things together? How did he find Rapture's coordinates? You said something like "after the attack on his ship, he entered Rapture through the lighthouse". What attack??? What ship? And how did he find the lighthouse? This is all important character development. You went so thoroughly into Ryan's backstory, it was really a shame that you didn't go into Melzer's, whenthere is an archive of SitS. I liked having the audio diaries interspersed throughout the video. However, it was super redundant for you to be telling the story, and then play an audio diary, only for us to find that you had just told us the contents of the diary, often with direct quotes. Just tell the story *up to* where the diary starts, and the just play the diary. Don't tell us what is in the diary, and then immediately play the diary. Meltzer and Cindy just break my heart. The first time I played, when his name appeared on the corpse, I was shocked. Absolutely broke my heart. It is always sad to me to kill him, and rescue Cindy to live her life without hee father. Hopefully she finds her way back to her mother when you bring all of the rescued Little Sisters to the surface (i always play as a rescuer). It is so very poignant, though, that he chose to become a protector (which must involve *agonizing* pain as they are grafted into the suits) just so he can be with Cindy, only to be killed and lose her forever. Right in the feels.

I know I'm late but this channel is friking amazing

i loved this mini story- the franchise should explore more of the relationship between the surface and rapture more

Just found out Meltzer was voiced by the same person who voiced Darkseid in ZSJL, Ray Porter. Not at all related, but I'll just enjoy this amazing story even more the next time I play. Also, I do wish Meltzer had some barely discernible last words, like Sinclair.

If you think about it, Lamb probably knew that someone would try to find Rapture in search of the girls who were kidnapped from the surface and might have even thought of a way to use this to gain more followers in the cult of personality that she had instilled in the people of Rapture. I love replaying Bioshock 2, and whenever I come across Mark and Cindy, I have felt conflicted about wether I should kill him or not, even though I inevitably choose to kill him and then save Cindy. All of the side stories and how they are interwoven with the main plot are part of what makes the Bioshock games interesting.

there was a web page connected to this before the game released mark was the best part of the game after weeks of looking for his daughter with him the game launched and he was in it. it was epic..

What hit me the hardest was after the moment after you kill Mike. As you walk up to her, she brightens up and looks at you. Just like any other little sister. "Daddy! You always save me from the monsters!" I was speechless.

I'm playing Bioshock 2 first time on the Nintendo switch and these accu-vox we're my favorite to look for.

Just recently played BioShock 2 remastered on my PS4. The first time I saw his name after defeating him, I was downright shocked and heartbroken to find out that it was him. Knowing that becoming a Big Daddy to be with his daughter was his fate is just awful.

When I first heard about Mark when I checked out the loot on the entranced I tried doing research on my own and found this video I’m playing the remastered version of course but still a fun game to play cause if the lore

This is all very interesting, but I am only one minute in, and I already gotta ask, where do you get all this from? I have played through the entire game multiple times and (to my knowledge) gotten all the audio diaries, but never was it explained to me in detail how and when Cindy was kidnapped. I do realize there is a lot of info in the bioshock fandom page too that isn't present in the game, but again I gotta ignorantly ask, where do people get all that from? Interviews? Data mining?

See my thing here about big daddies is that how is it that easy to transform someone like aren't they heavily modified with like metal and cybernetics this game makes it seem like it takes an hour at most maybe 20 mins

Wow, man, I missed the last bit of this side story when I played BioShock 2. I didn't know I interacted with these two! I know I saved Cindy, as I always spared the little sisters, but I'm saddened to know I killed her father in the process 😢

The first game came out when I was 5 im 15 now and playing all the bioshock 1 and 2 remastered and infinite doing everything I can in the games I've finished all the DLCs but I feel as if there's still mystery in the games

Marks story is a great example of the consequences of love and obsession. Would have loved to see a DLC showing his complete side of the story.

The side story of Meltzer was very riveting, and when I found the big daddy and little sister pair, I thought they were just another regular set. But when I found the last audio diary I instantly regretted my killing of Mark.

I don't even know what the animation for saving a little sister looks like I've never done it, And I've beaten the games multiple times. But I might actually try it now that I saw this video. I might actually see little girls instead of Adam bags

Mark's story is one of the reasons why I will always kill Lamb. She is just as sick as Ryan was but to self righteous to realize it.

I killed him without knowing it was mark, I was hoping you could help him or something and then I found the audiolog on his body and I felt terrible

Look on the bright side: after killing Mark you could save Cindy. This is what he would have wanted, despite it costing his life.

Wish we were able to team up with him for a bit like we do with sinckair would have been nice like you finding your daughter

I wish his story was a DLC. I remember my first time playing the game years ago. I was horrified when it was revealed that I ended up killing him. It felt like a huge gut punch. At least I was able to rescue his daughter.

I’m sorry but if they made a huge team to build past day rapture at it’s finest hour and there’s at least a couple storylines, bioshock can be such a HUGE platform I wish they did something like that

I thought he was a character that could be saved if you looked through every door and crevice. Broke my heart when i found out i had just killed him, at least his daughter was saved from being a little sister(depending on how you played)

In my case, I actually thought "I" was Mark Meltzer at some point. I think hunting for recordings to try and piece the story together started to stretch it a little thin, as the main character arcs started to twist and turn. It disconnected me from meaningful interactions with the in-game characters a little bit. I wish I would have known it was Mark, before I engaged him, e.g. through Sinclair... Either way, I enjoyed the delusion while it lasted.

This man actually managed to escape Rapture but crash landed on the Planet Apokalips where he proceeded to rule and conquer other civilisations with an iron fist!

I was saving all of the little sisters, so when I found Cindy I didn't know she was Cindy, nor did I know that the Rumbler was Mark, so I froze Mark and killed him. (It was a very quick death fyi). When he died I adopted the little sister (as I always do) and took her to a vent and rescued her (also as I always do, I almost never do the whole "make innocent little child find dead bodys and drink their blood just so you can get more power" thing). Only after I went back to the Rumbler's body and his name popped up, I was like, "WTH did I just do". (I went back to search the body.) At the same time that I feel sad for killing him and thus, making her not have a father, I was glad because she would be saved and not be stuck living as a hypnotized, drinking blood, and constantly having creepy addicts try to steal and kill her.

Very sad story indeed be my friends we're huge fans of the Bioshock series when we heard about this we didn't really think much of it then it continued and we were really kind of it we really felt bad for the guy we were hoping to run into him so we can help him we heard him from The Rusted Carousel and we were trying so hard to get that door open lol we can't find them so we thought he died or something then we ran into him as a big daddy of course we didn't know that was him we thought he was just some regular Big Daddy until we killed him and we saw the name that we felt pretty bad we rescue his little girl
