Dead downwind behind our heavy cloth polyester spi towards Barbados. Cape Verde to Mindelo in 9 days and a couple of hours, mostly just along the great circle line.

Hey guys its Portland Dan. There are so many things to compliment about this video. Your early vids not as much narration, love your descriptive narration about the trips. Love the bow shot looking aft, the front of GC looks so light, like its flying, A very well balanced speed machine. Flying the spinnaker made sailing look like it's "so easy" to sail. I'll bet you made al lot of people send in earnest money. GC is fast and you all sail it well. I remember the first GC video I saw of GC1. That speed run you all did in force 10 and just flat out smokin along. I watched that many times. Keep up the good work great crossing. One thing, anything below the waterline on a boat makes a huge difference in performance. I can't stand windsurfing in weeds for that reason.

Nice video. If Barbados had high mountains, you'd see it much sooner, but it is so flat, unlike Saint Vincent and the Grenadines where I grew up. As a kid I crossed the Atlantic from UK to Trinidad in a large cruise ship, passing through Vigo in Spain and Tenerife, then 9 days of open Atlantic. I remember huge waves rocking the boat and being confined to the cabin for 2 days. Navigation equipment was not as sophisticated in the 70's. I watched with interest to see what it would be like on your journey.

Fascinating video. I learned a fast cruising cat is safer, TWS is lower because of boat speed under the heavy duty spinnaker. You did a very fast passage in safety, with only 3 crew. A superb cat, interesting but not surprising that it surfs longer than your old boat. Great photography capturing the beauty of nature on your passage. Thank you for showing your instruments for longer. I like the gentle music you choose too. Enjoy the Caribbean. Regards Murray and Jean

Looks like a good combination of speed and luxury . Big plus point , seems that with this boat no extreme forces needed. We living & sailing in a 50 ft privilege Série 5,since 2,5 years now , we have a good boat but can’t match your average speed. And sometimes speed is safety .
@CatGreatcircle2 жыл бұрын
For us it is. We had a good look at the new Privilege 580 and a short demo sail. We like the lines and the “Sportop”. At less than 50% of the weight of the 580 forces are still huge but of course much less.

Great video and wonderful story telling of the crossing. Can you explain a bit more why you felt you needed the additional “back stay” by lashing the spare halyard to the back of the boom? Does having the spiniker up with the mainsail up for 10 straight days put so much pressure on the fixed backstay that you felt the need to reinforce? Is that common to do on the Outremer, or something common on large cruising cats? Also, were you surprised that you had no chafe on the spiniker halyard with it up for so long, or did you do little adjustments every couple of days to avoid chafe in one spot? Happy holidays and thanks again so much for allowing us to come along on your adventures.
@CatGreatcircle2 жыл бұрын
Most catamaran (and mast) builders tell you in their manuals that you can only use the spi together with the (full) main. So does Lorima for our carbon mast. Informally people tell us it’s not a problem but it’s impossible for us to know where the real limits are. Dynamic forces can be really high, especially after a fast surf when the sail will “stall” and then catches wind again with a bang. We still think the sail will blow up before there’s a problem with the mast but if we’re wrong that’s a bit of a problem. With this smaller spi and using the lower double halyard we’re quite comfortable in the meantime as the side stays / shrouds are connected to the mast at more or less the same position. When using the big spi and the higher halyard it might still be useful to create a temporary back stay to counter the forces on the top of the mast when not using the main. We adjusted the double halyard once after e got feedback from other boats that they had chafing (on the high halyard though). Not all of them had dyneema sleeves for extra protection. On the high halyard we have one spot where this sleeve is a bit dent, should be ok for a while but we’ll have a look during next GLYWO maintenance stop in the third week of January

Thanks for the great feedback!! Wishing all a Happy New Year and safe sailing. Will continue to follow your trip each week….its always a highlight to watch!
@awanderer90002 жыл бұрын
@@CatGreatcircle thank you for explaining, but I am still not sure that I fully understand. Having full main and a spi up should result in more load on the rig, isn't it? Or is it specifically the top of the mast (where spi halyard is attached) that is a concern? At the first glance it seems that if metal shrouds are not enough, then no additional halyards attached anywhere would help. But on a second look, it seems that shrouds on your boat are quite far forward, almost in line with the mast, so maybe strong pull forward at the top is indeed a concern.

10 days 😳👏 What was your score with the Lagoon in ARC 2019?
@CatGreatcircle2 жыл бұрын
You can’t compare different years with different start and finish locations and different weather. In 2019 we sailed direct Las Palmas - St Lucia in a bit over 16 days. This time we sailed via Cabo Verde. O55 Akaroa just sailed Tenerife - Barbados direct in 11,5 days. In general the Outremer 55 seems to be around 30% faster downwind than the Lagoon 52S.

Sorry for late comment/question, but... Great video as usual and I enjoyed the spinnaker sailing. I am considering the same type of sail for my cat (Balance 482). What is the weight and size (sqm) of your spinnaker?

Hey is a gennaker main and a bit hotter angle not faster easier vmg? Is the mast ok having no main up and just the shoot?
@CatGreatcircle2 жыл бұрын
Comparing to the other Outremers doing that in the same conditions it’s not as long as the great circle course is about dead downwind Using the lower halyard which is about the same height as the stays it shouldn’t be an issue at all is what the experts say
