Jack heads to Munich to test drive an advanced prototype of the City Transformer CT-1, one of the most unusual electric vehicles ever featured on Fully Charged Show. With the unique ability to reduce its width by a third at the push of a button, enabling you to squeeze through gaps in traffic like a motorbike, could this be the future of urban transportation?

I have to agree.... Scissor doors have to make common sense. Getting in and out of tight spaces, including when parked has to be its selling point. Not sure where we will all be by 2025? Maybe there will be so many city car options?

@@JackScarlett1 agreed and for people who don't believe that, try being stuck in a city behind a bendy bus that occupies an entire mini roundabout, instead of a proper double decker that has the same number of people but has already cleared the junction. Size matters, no matter what the SUV people tell you. I'm pretty sure if you nixed all the Land Rovers in Kensington and Chelsea, there'd be a lot more room for vehicles and people.

You can get covers for ebikes or etrikes to keep you dry, and it will come in thousands of dollars cheaper for the deliveryman, plus not require insurance and registration. Looks great and really agree with being able to split lanes in a car as its 'killer app'. In heavy traffic, in terms of speed to your destination, a Smart and a Range Rover are essentially the same. It's the reason why I chose a scooter years ago when I would have preferred a Twizzy. The one problem I do wonder about is how easy in reality it will be to go into folded mode when you really need to. In my experience, the 'oh nuts, I need to squeeze through' moment usually happens when stationary, and then I doubt that I would have enough space to get to 6mph and spend the 2 seconds to fold in before getting to the gap. I haven't done the sums, but suspect the gap will be well into 'what is this muppet doing, I'm going to lay on the horn and call him lots of names' territory.

I find the notion of filtering in this vehicle an interesting topic - legality aside, certainly here in the UK, I feel motorbikes are happily accepted by car drivers when they filter through in busy traffic, or jump to the front of a queue at the lights, because of perceived difference in transport types and simply that us poor motorcyclists have to cope with being exposed to the elements. Ultimately I don’t think anyone really cares. But if a micro car driver was suddenly able to jump queues, or filter, then I strongly suspect there would be quite a lot of anger from fellow car drivers.
@jonathankeenan5163

I agree however perhaps filtering isn't the real potential. Two of these can easily sit side by side at lights taking up far less space. The days of endless queues of cars clogging up our cities filled by one person with a spare armchair and sofa in the back needs to end.

I really hope this one works out. Basically I'll take anything that's a modern one or two seater car no bigger than the Smart. 111 miles with regen braking and DC fast charging sounds like a great road trip vehicle (assuming we're allowed to drive them on the M4 etc). If they could really do it for €16,000 and it actually comes to the UK that'd be great. I had a petrol Smart and miss it terribly, but the current electric one is way too expensive given the fact it has ancient tech in it (and thus lower range than Chinese counterparts). I'm really not interested in big cars, so I keep hoping this or a new Smart or the Microlino will make it to volume production. Since Lightyear and Arcimoto are both going the way of the dodo it looks like, I'll believe it when I see them on the roads. Fingers crossed and all that.

I like the car in this video but I also like having the option of getting on the highway for a short trip if I have to. I was hoping Smart would keep making city cars and come back to the US but unfortunately it looks like they are now going to make cars that look like everyone else's with four doors and a larger footprint. I still hope they come back as I think it'll be easier to get parts/service but I don't think I'd buy one of the new designs because I am also not interested in big cars haha
@jonevansauthor
@jonevansauthor Жыл бұрын
@@CraigMayhem the new owners of the brand have vaguely said they might possibly maybe just about do a new 2 seater but given how far they've departed from the original concept I'll believe that when I'm sitting in mine. I say the tech is bad partly because the UI for the console has been reported as being a touch low end/out of date/rubbish. But mostly because the Chinese same size cars with the same form factor have better ranges which implies Mercedes don't know what they're doing considering they charged a lot more. I do think it's sufficient but the price is a problem at least in the UK. It should have been cheaper, or have better range for that price. I'd still take one if it were financially viable - my next best option that actually exists unlike the CityTransformer - is the Fiat 500 and that has two junk seats in the boot for no reason and is much longer. I haven't found anything else close in size that's being manufactured that is.

I miss the Uniti One. A similar concept as this, if not transforming - but slightly bigger, so you could get a full adult comfortably in the back. A bit faster too, going to 120 km/h instead of 90. Both are things that go a long way towards making it viable as someone's only car. The really tiny ones, like the one in this video, will only ever make it as a secondary or rideshare vehicle. If you cannot even take a partner/spouse/etc with you, it just cannot replace a bigger vehicle. Example: I am single and live alone, which would make me the perfect target audience. But one of my parents lives nearby, and I visit them at least once per week. Sometimes we head out to a restaurant. So unfortunately, this car is disqualified. One and a half passengers is just not going to cut it.

I absolutely adore micro cars. A modern EV micro car could fill the same gap as the micro cars of the post war era. I also wish that euro/ UK government would bring in an EV equivalent of the JDM KIE car regs.

The iQ/Cygnet walked so this could run. It's a fine divide between appliance and personal transport, and this, dare I say, filters those two lanes. It shouldn't feel like work or a sacrifice, and this seems to provide just enough coddling to ease that transition. What a fun car, although I'm smitten with that Microlino. Slay with that outfit and jacket in particular, and what I'd give to sit like a backpack on Jack. Folding/Unfolding > Crab Walk.

The interior is supprisingly good and the range is probably more than it needs. Considering the Wuling Mini EV in China's popularity, I am not going to underestimate the mirco-car segment. But... its price is just a little too much atm start being 10 000 to 8000 and they will take off.

I like it! It's certainly better than a vehicle that's always wide like the Twizy. However, I still prefer a tilting one that's in the narrow form. There'd be less aero drag, don't have to worry about switching modes when slowing down and threading through traffic, contents wouldn't slide around as much when cornering, and it's just more fun. Also I don't think the variable-track mechanism costs much less than a tilting mechanism.

It's absolutely disgraceful that there are no government incentives for vehicles like this. They should be charging people through the roof to drive giant SUVs, especially in cities. Thousands should be taken off these things with tax breaks and incentives. Fill the cities with these and get rid of the current stock of laughable large wasteful cars.

The micro car class (L6 and L7 in the EU) could really use some lobbying, as Jack said. Not just for financial incentives, but for parking spaces too. In bigger cities street parking will get more and more restricted as the street space is released for pedestrian use (which is a good thing). This dilutes the main benefit of this class, parallel parking. You don't need to park parallel in parking garages and you end up taking exactly the same space with a microcar as a regular car takes, with the same cost obviously. The layout should be designed with microcars in mind as well, letting them take advantage of their small size. Motorcycles are often neglected too in this regard.

What a brilliant device! Forgetting for a moment the shape-shifting aspect, it smacks of how Renault should have developed the Twizy, instead of neglecting it: proper doors, useful range, heating. I can't believe that in this day and age that they'll be able to make a profit at that price. Perhaps they should consider a less-well equipped version without the shape-shifting, electric windows etc to compete with the Twizy and whatever Seat is rumoured to be coming up with.

Cool car, cool vid. Thanks for always uploading great content!! My worry with micro cars is that they could end up adding to city congestion if people start favouring them over public transport. Like, it's creating a new market for a new type of vehicle, but i don't see what issue it solves in a city. Anyway, I think the concept is great!

Thin electric cars one meter wide or less substantially reduce the financial and environmental costs of induced demand, the hauling of empty car side seats, street pollution, road width and parking space waste, street pollution, collisions, and congestion. When filtering, they can reduce commute times by > 40%. They also could positively impact real estate, shopping, and entertainment industries.

@@MickeySimple i can totally see that. Thanks for the discussion. I think my worry boils down to, that these cars aren't in cities now in large scale (at least in EU), when they get here, will they replace full size cars, or will they replace public transport, walking and personal mobility? PS. The scissors doors get my vote!

I can see with the right adaptions this concept could have massive implications for people with mobility issues. Your commented that people don't want a micro EV to be a glorified mobility scooter, but people with mobility issues do want more versatile transportation options and independence. With cooperation between legislators and engineers, this concept could tick quite a few boxes.

Interesting, but it does need some support. I would see this as a taxi alternative, as long as it can commute to the periphery. I have an interesting service in Brussels, that rents cars/bikes/cars, but it's limited to the city center - if you want to drive a few km out, you're out of luck. Anyway, thanks for sharing, it is quite an interesting and improvement on micro cars. Thank you

I know I'm 9 months late to this party but I wanted to add my 2 cents.... I really like this. As mentioned, most of the time vehicles have one person so why not be more efficient with it's size and price. in the rare times I need to have passengers or luggage, I'll rent a standard car. If these things take off and they can get the price down and if insurance and taxes are proportional to other cars much bigger, this could be a very nice retirement car for use anywhere, not just in the city.

I agree with many of your points however not withstanding this is a massive improvement on the ridiculous SUV clogging up our streets on the school run it has to be said this video illustrates perfectly how cars (more precisely their drivers) will try everything and anything to grab space away from pedestrians and cyclists. A fair proportion of the drive time in this piece was spent in such space.
