Not sure what I did to get this Blessing of a recap, but THANK YOU LORD.. I literally relived it while you explained. It was like listening to an audio book for the first time.. EXCELLENT!!!

I wonder if Buntaro’s offer to Mariko was a mix of the pettiness you described, as well as perhaps a side of genuinely trying to treat both her and her wishes more kindly, and go out together, if a misfire. A cup of tea and a misfired attempt at a kind gesture doesn’t fix years of terrible treatment, and the way he misfired showed how little he understood about her, but I was honestly touched that someone who went as far as him did seem to try to take steps to be better, even if there were definitely missteps in there

19:00 Daiyoin was not a teacher of Heir, but the first consort of Taiko's. She couldn't bear a Heir herself, so she headhunted young Lady Ruri (later Ochiba) for a consort to bear the Heir. That's why she said "our son" and "Look what I made". She died in a hand of the monster she made.

Karate kid 2 mentioned having tea together is a sign of falling in love , another reference to the movie was he gave him 3 days to mourn after his father died

I believe Hiromatsu called a last minute audible, the plan was to have the Edo Generals declare their loyalty or die, Hiromatsu saw that 1 old man and his few troops didn't equal 10 or 12 Generals and their troops, called an audible, for me the tell was "so you do believe in a pointless death" Hiromatsu's silent answer was neither do I

You act like Buntaro can't be surprised that HIS wife is in love with another man. If your husband was in love with another women would you not be salty????! That is such an insane statement. It was a really touching scene. 🤷‍♀️

Ah yes, after years of him treating her like garbage because of her origin, calling her cursed, beating her and demeaning her at every chance, she has the nerve of not loving him, so shocking 😂

@@reki76On the contrary, Mariko always felt like marrying into his family was beneath her, and served no purpose, while Buntaro actually loved her deeply and wanted to make it work. You only see the resulting fallout on the show of her tarnished family name and the dishonor it brought upon Buntaro and his line, in conjunction with the cold malicious attitude she gave him since what her father had done. Years of being given the cold shoulder by your wife as resentment for giving the order to live every year surely must take its toll after some time.

@@Mr.Hyde_23while what you say seems fairly true, that’s still no excuse for him to ever hit her or treat her so poorly in response. I see both sides though. I was both touched by the scene, and I saw the places where I think he messed up. His actor is amazing

@@OwnYourBaldSpot Yeah, this episode really let Shinnosuke Abe (Buntaro) show his acting talent. The character had been pretty one-dimensional beforehand -- deliberately designed to make you hate him, seemingly irredeemable. Had the tenderness been allowed to show before the abuse, maybe we'd be less easy to excuse her disdain for him.

5:31 Nobutada wasn't a kid anymore. Maybe in modern-day US, sure, where anyone under the age of 30 is still considered a "kid". Back in the 1600s people didn't have TVs, cellphones, or the Internet to distract children from learning _actual_ skills, like hunting and cleaning game, and learning a trade. Once you starting hanging around older folks in this setting you're expected to shed any remaining childishness left in you. Especially if you're part of the Japanese (and Asian) upper class, where one's actions can easily drag down the clan's standing and prestige. In any case, Nobutada's brashness stems more from a lack of combat experience. Growing up as a Regent's son in a big city like Edo _does_ prevent him from doing frequent patrols, unlike Omi who most likely had to defend his fishing village from bandits every lean season.

Also the difference of Omi's and Nagakado's starting positions. Omi starts in a small unremarkable town. If he wants anything in life, he's going to have to go get it. Nagakado on the other hand is the heir to one of the most powerful people in Japan. All he has to do is just wait for his turn.

Poor Buntaro, I almost felt sorry for him, to me it’s almost like ‘if I can’t have you no one else will’, he denied her for years for his own selfish reason but now suddenly he wants them to die together. Too little too late sir !
