For people with PTSD (from cumulative trauma) discussing their trauma can be very difficult and may lead to overwhelm and distress. People are often asked to describe what happened to doctors, investigators, insurance companies etc. So how can you generate an account without becoming too overwhelmed?
In undertaking Trauma therapy one usually needs to figure out where to start, but the psychologist doesn't know where to start because he/she doesn't know the scope of their patients trauma?
An answer to these problems is to write a very low resolution account of each trauma: “trauma headlines”. The account is just the gist of what took place, with no detail, like a newspaper headline. While even this can be challenging it is a helpful first step to untangle trauma which can then help with therapeutic work to unpack and resolve trauma. This can be used to make a trauma timeline. it can be the starting point for expressive writing therapy.
A trauma headline consists of the following elements:
Who you were? (age, role)
Emotion(s) you felt? (fear, anger)
What occurred (in a few words)? Where?
When?
Even doing a low resolution account like this can stir things up, so it's a good idea to work with a doctor, psychologist or psychiatrist to best prepare for this process.

Very helpful - I had not learned to do this yet, this will make it easier to describe in a situation where I want to talk about the topic but without detail

Yes, this is so true! I don't work on the trauma in a therapeutic way, such as you guys. However, I do need a history of Trauma, so I always say I know this may be difficult to answer, but I don't need details just what type of trauma it was, and when it happened. For instance, domestic violence from 1999 to 2010. The patients are usually relieved to hear they don't need to go too deep, however, I do encourage therapy as though I am a prescriber I do believe in skills before pills or even skills with pills! The therapy skills learned not only help to resolve trauma but helps to mitigate future anxieties to prevent mental illness from developing. In short, therapy heals and promotes resilience.

People are often very anxious that in initial interview will explore trauma history. People are greatly relived when you tell them that it’s not necessary, and there are other ways to untangle trauma.
