The Tree that Almost Started a War

In 1976, a poplar tree in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea was getting a little too big. So the United States and South Korea decided to send some men to trim the tree in what should have been a routine operation. I won't spoil what happened, but let's just say it's now known as the Korean axe murder incident. So the United Nations Command launched an extensive military operation to cut down this tree in a show of force. Officially known as Operation Paul Bunyan, hundreds of soldiers marched into the DMZ to cut a tree, assisted by jets, bombers, and an aircraft carrier. Hopefully that'll teach the North Koreans to let us do our tree-trimming in peace!

I always love past stories of all the times the US went all out to say "fuck you" to whoever made the poor decision to piss off the US military. Especially when they show just enough restraint to force the enemy into choosing between making an even worse decision or backing off after getting showed up. And considering coalition forces had already taken all of North Korea once before, this story comes across to me as a reminder to NK that their asses got kicked once and they can get kicked again if it weren't for China.

Something to note about this, the South Korean speical forces guys, you know, the ones with claymores on their chests? Yeah, they also taped M16s to the bottom of the trucks they arrived in, which shocked the Americans because they weren't allowed to do that, but, Koreans are crazy, I should know, I am Korean. Also, one of the soldiers would later go on to become President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, the guy at 0:51 who is holding hands with Kim Jong Un.
